We discovered the luxurious W15 Hotel nestled amongst the idyllic fishing village of Weligama on Sri Lanka's picturesque South Coast... just under 2 hours drive, from Colombo International Airport.
W15 is absolute beachfront and brand new. The sandy beach straight out the front stretches both ways for hundreds and hundreds of metres. Safe for beginners and receiving swell all year round, there are good quality banks that will hold great waves for experienced surfers under the right conditions. Stroll up or down to beach to surf an uncrowded bank or watch the famous stilt fishing men do their thing.
Keep in mind, Weligama is much more than a great surf spot with the classic sandy, sunny beach atmosphere. Surrounded by rubber and coconut plantations, ancient temples, spice gardens and National Parks, Weligama is the ideal starting point for excursions along Sri Lanka's South and West Coast.
Here are the W15 facts. It's a ten room luxury hotel with 45 metres of direct beach frontage with surf right out front. It offers contemporary living spaces with a twist of funky flavor. The open-air restaurant has a 13m long bar with stunning views of the Indian Ocean and Weligama Bay. It has an infinity pool and a large decked area with sunbeds and cabanas - a very inviting option after a day surfing, day tripping or adventuring into Southern Sri Lanka's National Parks. We wholeheartedly recommend adding W15 Hotel to your Sri Lankan itinerary. See for yourself...
The guest rooms and the executive suite at W15 Hotel are modern, comfortable and fitted with all the creature comforts. Features include Geneva bluetooth audio docks, premium cable television, high-speed Internet access, hand-picked art and luxury linen. The Ocean View Deluxe Room and the Executive Suite are well worth the upgrade with incredible Indian Ocean views through the floor to ceiling windows.

Rams - Midigama
Midigama, the next village along, the two spots are more exposed to Sth winds. Rams Right is a short, powerful right that breaks over a shallow reef and offers frequent tubes.
Lazy Left - Midigama
The aptly named Lazy Lefts is an old coral shelf found a little further East, where a slow, fat left trundles along for 100m. Can get a bit of backwash. Chilled out place, nice and far less crowded than Hikkaduwa.
There are a number of surf spots tucked away in various corners to the both the East and the West of Weligama. If you are an experienced surfer looking for more challenging waves, ask us about our surf guiding options.
We can arrange experienced surf guides who will take you to the best waves available. Just ask.
In recent years, there has been an explosion of learn to surf schools along the Weligama stretch. Without putting too fine a point on it, some of these local "instructors" are likely to be more adept at making a dollar than providing thorough, competent, appropriate and safe surfing tuition. If you really want to learn to surf in Sri Lanka, ask us about it. We will ensure you receive proper instruction by a well qualified and accredited surf coach.
