Surf Uruna Bay Retreat

Uruna Bay Retreat is located on Pokpok Island PNG, and is the base for all inbound surfers that will surf within the SAPNG Pirung SMP area.

The SAPNG Pirung SMP surf breaks are all reef point breaks, breaking left and right. There are a wide variety of breaks, which handle smaller surf for longboarding, fish and short boards, with the conditions ranging from 2ft to 6ft plus.

  • Baritaka or "Shark Alley" is around 15 minutes by dinghy and is a left and right hander, breaking into deep water passage creating some large swell.
  • Tunani Island is about 25 minutes by dinghy, further right of Shark Alley, and is both left and right hander, breaking on reef into deep water.
  • Moeo Passage (Kieta Passage) – is in front of Uruna Bay retreat about 15 minutes by dinghy and breaks left and right into the main passage where the light houses are located, and where the ships enter/exit into Kieta harbour
  • Orovo Island – (formally a dive resort) has a small wave for beginners for longboard and about 15 minutes by dinghy
  • Takanupe Island – is approximately 30 minutes by dinghy, and is an incredible left hander that barrels, and handles small to big surf breaking into shallow reef (local favourite)
  • Kurikiki Island – is located approximately 30 minutes from Uruna Bay Retreat, or few minutes from Takanupe, and is a left and right hander breaking into deep water.

Non-Surf Activities

Uruna Bay Retreat offers more than idyllic accommodation, but a variety of non-surf activities including kayaking, SUP boarding, jet skiing, hiking, island hopping, and true PNG cultural experiences.
