Tupira Surf Club

Welcome to Tupira Surf Club, a cosy guesthouse situated on the serene Ulingan Bay in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea. This beachfront guesthouse has stunning views of the Tupira Right surf break and is in the perfect spot for anyone who loves surfing or simply enjoys the ocean. This simple guesthouse provides all the comfort you need to relax and unwind in this idyllic region of PNG.

Tupira Surf Club is located 180 km north of the Madang township and can be reached within a three-hour drive of Madang Airport. It was founded by the late Justice Nicholas Kirriwom in 2008, and was created to provide a sustainable, income-producing initiative for the local villagers. The traditional-style guesthouse features six twin rooms and there’s an additional two-bedroom bungalow if you’d prefer more privacy.

Surfing in PNG

Ulingan Bay is known as one of the most consistent swell magnets in PNG, with various surf breaks around the surf club that cater to intermediate to advanced surfers. Thanks to the surf management plan for the Ulingan Bay area, surfer numbers are limited to a maximum of 20 in the greater area and 12 guests at the surf club, which means more waves for you!

Tupira Surf Club is a community-owned and operated surf camp where the staff take great pride in their work and always go above and beyond to ensure their guests are happy and are enjoying their stay. Whether you’re seeking an adventurous surfing holiday or a peaceful beach retreat, Tupira Surf Club is the perfect place to stay for an unforgettable PNG experience.

Accommodation

Nestled in the serene Ulingan Bay of Madang Province, Papua New Guinea, Tupira Surf Club offers comfortable and laid-back beachfront accommodation. After a long day in the waves, fishing or sightseeing, it’s the perfect place to unwind with a cold drink and watch the sun go down.

The Guesthouse

The guesthouse features six twin rooms and accommodates up to 12 adults. It features high ceilings with thatched roofing, which ensures good ventilation and plenty of natural light. Its seaside location means you can enjoy the cool ocean breeze and fall asleep to the soothing sound of the waves. The guesthouse has running water pumped from natural springs, providing you with fresh water for showers, as well as two septic toilets and generators for electricity.

If you’re looking for more privacy, the two-bedroom bungalow is the best choice. It boasts a private balcony and bathroom and is ideal for couples, small groups or families, and can be booked at a slightly higher rate.

Meals

At Tupira Surf Club, guests can enjoy a variety of delicious meals prepared with fresh fruit and vegetables, organically raised chickens, freshly caught Yellowfin Tuna, Red Emperor, Giant Trevally and Snapper, and the occasional BBQ.

The kitchen staff always put on an impressive spread, exactly what you need after a long day in the ocean. At Tupira Surf Club, there is also a fully licensed bar serving cold beer and spirits, as well as a range of soft drinks and bottled water.

Surf Tupira Surf Club

This region of PNG is still a relatively new frontier, with new surf breaks being discovered every season.

The north swell approaches in early October and runs consistently through to April, and the unique contour of the coast means waves are abundant, from the classic Tupira point to hollow, heavy slabs.

Due to custodial ownership of land, the rights to surf at certain breaks (and even to visit the villages) are determined by the village chiefs. These rights change from year to year and we are always in discussion to bring old and new breaks back in service.

Tupira Right

A super fun wave directly out the front of Tupira Surf Club. As a north swell magnet, it’s one of the most consistent waves in the region. A reliable wave that offers barrels or cruisy waves for a longboard.

Suaru Left and Right

These breaks are in an incredible location, with a fast right on the north side of the village and a classic outer-reef left. Normally double the size of Tupira, the left-hander breaks over shallow reef and is fun at 3 ft, or closely resembles an Indonesian reef break in bigger swells. Expect barrels and 100 m rides and long stretched-out walls down the line. All this with picturesque views of the bay and the volcano behind.

Tawulte

Tawulte is a fun, playful left-hander over a sandy bottom, which in the right conditions can break for 300 to 400 metres. When Tupira is breaking, Tawulte will be half the size.

Rurunat

Rurunat is a short, punchy left-hander over a shallow reef. It breaks best on a big swell and high tide, with fun barrels on take-off and a tricky mid-section (often compared to Race Tracks in Uluwatu, Indonesia).

Surf Guides

The resident surf guide at Tupira Surf Club will ensure you don’t miss any opportunity for epic waves, and get to experience everything this region of PNG has to offer.

Non-Surf Activities

Besides surfing, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained at Tupira Surf Club. Fishing for Yellowfin Tuna is a popular pastime and boat trips are available for an extra charge. For nature lovers, there’s bushwalking, bird watching (keep your eye out for the elusive bird of paradise), or you can meet the locals at the nearby village.

For something unique, you can try prawn fishing under the stars, or just simply relax and unwind and enjoy the sounds of the local north coast bamboo and string band.

We had a lovely trip and met a great bunch of blokes. We were lucky with swell and winds and surfed to our hearts contents. Thanks for organizing it for us Nathan!
