Located on a private island in the Maldives South Male Atoll, Kandooma Resort is a 40 minute speed boat ride from Male International Airport. The resort is named after the Kandoo tree, which is found in abundance on the island. Kandooma Resort features spectacular architecture inspired by sea barnacles.
Holidays at Kandooma are a popular choice with families and young couples with a very friendly, easy-going tropical island atmosphere. The beaches have more than enough room for guests to enjoy relaxed seclusion and privacy. The island is 13 hectares in area (32 acres) or approximately a 20 minute walk around the perimeter - a bit longer if you stroll and beach-comb along the way. It is located about two thirds of the way down the south-eastern edge of the South Male Atoll and is a neighbour to the resort island of Cocoa in the north and the local island Guraidhoo in the south. For a sampling of Maldivian life, visits to Guraidhoo can be arranged. Kandooma offers varied evening activities that may include live music, discos and local folklore. You can also enjoy tennis, football, table-tennis and darts, as well as just relaxing in the expansive resort pool. Plenty to keep you busy when you are not surfing or soaking up the sun on Kandooma beach! Kandooma is also very popular with scuba divers and snorkellers, with plenty of exotic marine life. The island is in close proximity to some of the Maldive’s best dive sites.

It all becomes uniquely Kandooma when the resort “fold” in a few original dishes and service touches.
Kandooma Café Breakfast (6.30am to 10.30pm)
Greet the day in the “Big Barnacle”! Wide archways let in the sunshine and atoll views. Also news, weather and music provided by the “bananas in the morning” breakfast show on Radio Kandooma Breeze. Fresh juice, pressed coffee, an international selection of breakfasts and attendant chefs ready to receive instructions on just how easy you would like your eggs over.
Bokkuraa Coffee Club (6.30am to 11pm)
It is a buzzy place to enjoy a little bit of the city by the beach as you hear the familiar hiss and froth of a cappuccino in creation. All fortified by daily changing pastries and homemade ice creams by the scoop or by the cone. Take Out and Delivery is available 24 hours if the only thing you might want to do is flop on the lounger and get a pizza in the comfort of your Kandooma home.
Poolside Lunch (10am to 11pm)
Relax! It’s too hot to do anything else, except perhaps to decide whether to order from a menu of fresh salads, sandwiches, wood-fired pizza or pick out a choice eye fillet or lamb loin to be grilled by yourself under the shade of a coconut grove. Then it’s back to the shade of the umbrella from where the searing blue of the atoll can best be appreciated.
The Deck (5pm to 10pm)
For a slightly bohemian end to the day, walk past the wine room (resist the urge to have a quick browse or you’ll miss the sunset) and head up the circular stairs to The Deck... an expanse of teak planking covering the rooftop of The Kitchen and set out with low tables, startlingly blue cushions, bean bags and monolithic granite planters of greenery. Having freshly showered off a day of sunshine and saltwater, it is the ideal place to worship a sunset and the Mojitos. After sundown the area is lit entirely by Moroccan lanterns and the stars. Ideal to continue with cocktails and graze on the tapas menu.
Dinner (6pm to 11pm)
The Bright and Breezy “Big Barnacle” becomes a warm cave of soft glowing light and presents an intimate mood under the stars... visible through the skylight 60 feet above. Chill out sounds of Radio Kandooma Bleu add to this almost surreal romantic environment. A banquet of travel inspired Mediterranean dishes spiced with flavours of Asia is supplemented by chefs busily working tandoor ovens, teppan grills and rottiseurs.
The Kitchen (6.30pm to 11.30pm)
Some hotels take diners into the kitchen to sit at “the chefs table”. Kandooma brought the kitchen out and put it in the middle of the restaurant to create an exquisitely elegant dining experience with the best view on the island. Diners can choose to sit in elegant comfort looking out over Kandooma channel, out on the beach, feet in the sand, or engage the chefs in conversation by reserving a seat at one of the two main kitchen ranges. The food will be choices Thai and Mediterranean with a good representation of seafood. About 15 paces away is the wine room where a choice of 250 wines await.
The Kandooma Rights, just out front of the resort is a zippy hollow right that will keep all standard of surfer happy. There are 4 other breaks within a short boat ride with 2 lefts and another 2 rights. The Maldive's South Male atoll is not as consistent as the better known North Male atoll however if the swell direction is right, there are world class waves on offer.
Please be aware that as of 2014, Kandooma Resort is capping surfer numbers to a maximum 50. Kandooma will also be enforcing exclusivity of Kandooma Rights, this will ensure surfers can enjoy more waves with less hassle. Surfers must pre-purchase a surfing pass or they will not be allowed to surf Kandooma rights whilst staying on the island.
Whilst not nearly as consistent as the more popular North Male atoll, there are still some super fun waves accessible from Kandooma Resort if the swell direction is SSE or SE and over 4ft. Kandooma Right is a fast hollow right directly out front of the resort within an easy paddle and across the pass is Foxys and Riptides that can pick up a little more swell than Kandooma. Within 20 minutes boat ride you have access to another 4 breaks that World Surfaris charter guests have been surfing for many years and still frequent when conditions are right. One of these waves, Tucky Joes Left is regarded by many as one of the best lefts in the Maldives and on its day throws out some incredible barrels. Dhoni boat surf transfers are included in the surfer package. We recommend Kandooma for surfers who are not 100% focussed on a full on surf trip. If you are looking for a fantastic island resort for a family or romantic holiday with a few quality waves thrown in, then Kandooma Resort in the Maldvies should tick all the boxes.
Kandooma Resort offers an enormous variety of holiday activities such as beach volleyball, cricket, petanque, beach croquet, bicycle polo and underwater hockey. In addition you can go on kayaking adventures, snorkel trips or try windsurfing.
