From May to October, the Handhu surf charter will be deployed for 10 Night Central Atoll Trips. The charters will start in Male and finish in Male, giving the trip more flexibility to chase waves around the Central Atolls and Male Atolls. There are 6 atolls between Male and Laamu and the conditions can now dictate where you surf and not a domestic flight itinerary. Your expert guide will find you an abundance of surf East and West of the Central Atolls with the option of a sneaky session in the North Male Atolls to finish the trip.
Launched in February 2004, Handhu is a 95 ft vessel built specifically for surf charters. Unlike other Maldivian vessels that operate diving charters plus some surf trips, Handhu is 100% dedicated to surf trips. The massive interior saloon area is fully air-conditioned with all the latest electronic entertainment equipment (large flat screen TV, DVD, stereo system etc). There is a massive lounge / dining area that easily seats a dozen guests in comfort. The bar is well-stocked with European beer, Australian wine and a variety of spirits plus a large variety of soft drinks. Tea, coffee and drinking water are included in the package price. Outside, the deck space is huge with a large undercover alfresco lounge / dining area capable of seating at least 15 people. This is the favourite dining area, as it allows guests to escape the hot Maldivian sun, yet still remain outdoors, capturing cool ocean breezes whilst watching the surf break nearby. An outside stairwell leads to a massive sundeck with bench seating around the perimeter. This is the ideal party venue at the end of a hard day's surfing with a few cold drinks and the stereo pumping out the tunes whilst watching the sun set over the islands. The aft deck is ideal for game fishing and even the most accomplished game fishermen will be impressed with the set-up. There are two outdoor showers for rinsing the salt water off after your surf, snorkel or swim.
Handhu is 95 ft of multi levelled comfort. The lower deck consists of of six air-conditioned twin guest cabins (1 double/1 single bed) with ensuite bathrooms with hot showers and flush toilet. All cabins have plenty of storage for luggage and clothes and power points for charging batteries. The main deck houses the wheel house, spacious air conditioned saloon with indoor dining table, comfy lounge, entertainment system to plug in your tunes, watch a movies or have a few drinks from the bar. Moving outdoors on the main deck, the aft area has a large deck with spot lights for night fishing, move to the bow area and you have the ultimate chillout area to take in the ocean breeze. A large built in outdoor lounge comfortable accommodates all guests in shaded comfort. This is the ultimate place to recline in between surf sessions parked in the channel watching your mates pull in. The ceiling of this area is fitted with board racks, so you can lay back and admire your quiver and contemplate a fin change etc. There is a large outdoor dining table here and many meals are taken here during the trip. Moving upstairs finds you on the huge upper sundeck which doubles as a dance floor, indoor soccer court, morning yoga area etc. Part of this area is shaded with enough seating for the entire group and it usually becomes the sunset lounge for pre-dinner drinks after a hard days surfing. The boat is equipped with a dingy tender for delivery to the line up and basic snorkelling and fishing gear.

The Central Atolls are not as frequented as the northern Atolls and World Surfaris has been at the forefront of discovery in this region since the late 90's.
This region of the Maldives experiences a similar surf season to Indonesia. The prime time to be in this region is May to October and Handhu is deployed to the Central atolls from May to September to hunt down the South swells that are frequent from South East or South West over this period. The winds tend to be light and usually with some west in the angle over this time which is favourable for offshore conditions at most breaks. The surf generally ranges in size from 2-8 feet, however bigger days can been experienced from time to time. A great variety of reef breaks exist throughout these atolls from long mellow walls to more intense hollow waves. You will be surfed out after 11 days on a Handhu Central atolls trip.
Shadow’s surf guiding experience in the atolls between Male’ and Laamu is 2nd to none. He’s worked onboard Handhu for several years now and is in tune with what the waves are doing at all times. He’s happy to instruct the skipper to up anchor and steam all night if it means the guests will wake up to perfect uncrowded conditions in another atoll. Shadow is very handy with a camera and well equipped to shoot from land or water and offers a photo package to clients at very reasonable rates.
Even if you are not a keen fisherman you will find yourself hooking into a spot of game fishing as you travel between breaks. The variety of species is unbelievable. If you are keen, bring your own gear and lures! Snorkelling and village visits are also a highlight.
This is an example itinerary for a trip starting and finishing in Male.
Arrive Male' in the evening and met by representative of Handhu and transferred to the charter. Arrive onboard Handhu around 11-12pm/am
Wake up to the sound of the anchor being pulled and moving to the first best break in North or South Male for your morning wash off travel surf. Over the next 10 days you will surf up to 6 atolls between Laamu and Male' and travel at night when weather permits to minimise any loss of surf time during the day. The variety of waves on offer is mind boggling and your guide will have you in the right place at the right time. The itinerary is flexible and based on group consensus. You may wish to spend the last few days in the Male' atolls surfing some of the better known breaks such as Sultans, Cokes etc. or you may opt to spend the majority of the time in the more remote Central Atolls.
