Explorer – Male & Northern Atolls

The Explorer Surf Charter accommodates up to 14 guests (we recommend only 10-12 surfers maximum), all Explorer cabins have double/twin beds, plus one cabin can be booked as a triple with a small single bed. All cabins feature private ensuites and air-conditioning.

Decorated in light wood and contemporary style, the main deck has a large saloon with comfy sofas. The bar is fully licensed, so you can enjoy your favourite beverage as the sun dips below the horizon. The upper deck has loungers for sunbathing and just kicking back.

Non-surfing partners are welcome and can spend a relaxing holiday swimming, snorkelling or simply sunbathing and chilling on the expansive sun deck.

Surf Dhoni

A trip on the Explorer wouldn’t be what it is without the backup and support of our 53ft dhoni. Due to steep reef drop-offs in the region, strong moving currents and sometimes strong winds, it is can be hard for charter boats to anchor close to the surf breaks. A dhoni comes in very handy for this, as it can cruise in shallower waters and works as a great middle point between the waves and the mothership. They are also great for non-surfers to hang out, a great place to store your surfing gear and boards and they double as a great fishing boat or scuba diving boat.

Accommodation

The Explorer has 7 cabins and is able to sleep up to 14 people. However, World Surfaris quality control policy recommends a maximum of 12 surfers on any surf charter. All cabins come air-conditioned and with private ensuite bathrooms.

The boat itself features a large sun deck perfect for chilling and a chin wag over a few drinks and nibbles provided by the amazing chef and crew.

The 53ft support dhoni is a welcome addition to any surf charter but it is absolutely essential in the Male Atolls with the shallow reef and fewer places for the charter to set an anchorage. It gets you closer to the break and a half-way point between you and the mothership. The Explorer also comes with a 17ft zip-about dhingy, which is perfect for getting you into the action and close to the takeoff zone.

Accommodation:
7 cabins each with ensuite and air conditioning.
All cabins:  Ensuite, DVD, hair dryer, air con.

Surf Explorer – Male & Northern Atolls

The best waves in the Maldives can be had from March to October, with the biggest swells likely to occur in June/July/August.  During these months, the conditions are predominantly off-shore all day and the swell direction varies from SE – SW.  The surf generally ranges in size from 2-8 feet, however bigger days have been experienced and certain breaks have been known to handle anything north of 12ft.

A great variety of reef breaks exist ranging in intensity from quite mellow, shreddable walls to gnarlier, hollow pits.  There is something for everyone.  World Surfaris guides are some of the most experienced you will meet. They not only monitor the conditions but are constantly checking with other boat skippers/guides where they will be to avoid paddling out and instantly crowding the lineups. Although we do not promise uncrowded waves at any point, our guides will do their best to avoid them at all costs and their experience plays a pivotal role in trying to make this happen.

The Breaks: Male Atolls

Jailbreaks is a classic right-hander.  A long, down-the-line wave with 3 distinct sections including a mid barrel section.  Rides of up to 300m can be had when it’s lining up.

The right-hander known as Cokes (Colas) breaks 3-10ft. This wave has been well documented and is the hollowest in the North Male Atoll.

Chickens across the bay from Cokes is probably the fastest wave in the North Male Atoll.  This wave holds swell size from 3ft to well over 10ft and provides exciting rides up to 500m long.

The South Male’ Atoll also has several great set-ups that with the right swell direction can be amazing.  World Surfaris surf-guides have vast experience in this region and can make recommendations accordingly.  It is only a 2 hour trip from Nth Male’ Atoll breaks to the Sth Male’ Atoll breaks. It’s definitely worth checking out on a solid SE swell and Tucky Joe’s left might just dish up the barrel of your life. Riptides is also a super rippable and one of the funnest waves you will ever experience. If the swell is on, head South!

The Breaks: Northern Atolls

Because this region is still fairly undiscovered we don’t want to give away too much. Many surfers have been before but it still remains largely undocumented. Our surf guide on the Explorer, Shadow is from this region of the Maldives and knows all there is to know about the Northern Atolls. If you want a proper surf trip with a bit of searching involved then a Northern Atolls trip with the Explorer is a great option.

Surf Guides

Ablo ‘Shadow’ Lathyf

Shadow started working with World Surfaris in 2008. He has been a favourite with World Surfaris’ customers over the years, having spent many seasons on the Handhu & HandhuFalhi. Shadow is from the Northern part of the Maldives where there isn’t too much surf during the off-season (or so he says), so by the time surf season kicks in, Shadow is ready to get his guests and himself frothing on the waves around North & South Male as well as early season waves in the Outer Atolls. Shadows experience and easy going personality makes him one of the best surf guides in the Maldives benefitting you and your friends on your next boat trip with him.

Non-Surf Activities

The fishing is some of the best in the world and the amazing variety of species will keep the hardcore angler stoked and the novice angler hooked!  The crew of the Explorer love fishing and are happy to assist.  Keen fishermen should take their own game rod, reel and lures!

The Maldives is one of the prettiest island paradises in the world and the Male Atolls offer you the opportunity to witness remote locations that few tourists have ever seen.  Watching the sunset over the islands whilst sipping on a cold beer after a rewarding days surfing or fishing with just you and your mates is as good it gets!

You may even find a SUP onboard the Explorer to allow you to cruise around in the beautiful lagoons, which swarm with all kinds of marine life. Or take a snorkel set and check out the fish at one of the popular reefs nearby. Whenever you aren’t surfing, there is plenty to see and do.
