“Bem Vindo” – Welcome to Mozambique, the welcoming words that will greet you on your arrival to the “land of smiles”. Read on for our sample itinerary...
Your World Surfaris' surf guide will be waiting to meet you at the Inhambane Airport, Mozambique. As you enjoy the short 30-minute ride to the quaint village of Tofo, you will catch tantalizing glimpses of village life, the endless coconut plantations and the stunning beauty of the estuary.
Your first sighting of the ocean will leave you all warm and fuzzy, you're close to the Tropic of Capricorn and the ocean is as crystal clear as it comes. Once you pull up for a look at the first sand bottom point, you will know you are in a special place. Some travellers to these parts have even referred to it as the sand bottom version of Indonesia.
Once you have settled into your Mozambique coastal accommodation, it’s all about getting into the ebb and flow of the local tide and weather conditions. Gorging yourself on daily surfs in the warm Indian Ocean water, relaxing in the tranquility of the casual lifestyle and dining on the best local cuisine.
With over five hundred years of Portuguese influence, try delicous local food such as Pao (Portuguese bread rolls), Peri Peri chicken, Prego steak rolls and an abundance of fresh tropical fruit, seafood, cashews, Matapa (cassava leaves), along with 2M (the Mozambican beer) and if you're game, the local rum Tipo Tinto.
If you are not completely mesmerised by Mozambique at first sight, the adventure to exquisite Pomene Marine Reserve will certainly finish the job. The scenic 4WD drive over sand dunes and coastal forest roads will deliver you to the most amazing point and natural salt-water estuary. This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful places on earth. And the wave on its day is not too shabby, either. As we hope you will discover personally.
World Surfaris' surf trip packages offer the best hand picked accommodation in the 3 and 5 star categories for each of the home bases in the Tofu and Pomene areas. The attentive 24/7 care your surf guide will provide makes this a great option for small groups of friends, families and couples. This area is a treasure chest of options to suit all surfers. There are super fun, beach break options, sand points and sand spits that will have you in the water every day. This hidden and relatively unknown gem has a sand bottom point that, on it’s day could easily match the best the world has to offer. We don’t really want to say much more than that and look forward to hearing your thoughts - once you have surfed it.
The major key to the stoke level of these African Surfaris is our expert local surf guiding. Our guides are long time local surfers who know where and when the best waves will be each day. You will NOT waste precious holiday time trying to find your own waves and dodging crowds. You can simply sit back, relax and get excited at the prospect of which break you will get introduced to each day. Your guide will become your mate, as they will surf with you each day and give you all the tips on where to sit, which waves to catch at the spot and most importantly give you fore warning on any hazards. This ensures you get to enjoy everyday of your trip and not have it get cut short. They will also introduce you to friendly, welcoming locals, if there are any at the spots you will get to surf.
Ryan cut his teeth the hard way, figuring everything out himself... doing trip after trip to work out tides, winds and the unique weather patterns that affect the surf on the beautiful stretch of coast from Durban into Mozambique. He got it so dialled, he started a little swell chasing program for friends. Needless to say, he became their best friends after some of the waves he put them into. The man has bush craft, fish craft and surf craft – indeed, he is a salty old seadog with accumulated knowledge way beyond his years. He knows all the locals intimately, which ensures not only an epic trip but a rich cultural experience as well. Oh, we forgot to mention he is the biggest grommet ever when it comes to surfing, ensuring you will be on it when you need to be! Hates to have a good time and a few laughs.
The coastline of Mozambique offers a host of really cool things to do. From long beach walks to cruising the estuary in a local Dhow, fishing, estuary kayak tours, diving, snorkeling, dolphin viewing, swimming with whale sharks or just cruising and enjoying the local Mozambican cuisine.
