Huvadhoo and Addu Atolls (referred often as the Southern/Outer Atolls) are located in the most southern section of the Maldives.
Although it is not completely uncrowded there are certainly fewer surf charters and surf resorts operating in this area, causing even the most popular spots in this region to be less crowded than the Northern Atolls. Of all the Maldives surf spots, the breaks in the Outer Atolls remain among the most secluded and idyllic, preserving the reality of a remote island paradise that comes complete with incredible waves.
The best known waves in the area are Beacons, Castaways, and Tiger Stripes. Beacons and Tiger Stripes are touted as two of the most powerful waves in the Maldives, barreling down fast and hard on a shallow reef hugging drainer. Fortunately for most, this is not as frequent as the likes of Indonesia or some breaks scattered around the Pacific Ocean. Generally speaking the waves of the Outer Atolls are ruler edged and perfect.
Although these waves tend to be smaller than some of the more northerly atolls, the south-facing coastline really opens the breaks up to the southern swells that flood the area. Clean southern swells bombard the Outer Atolls just about all year. In the past early and late season (Mar-May) & (Sep-Nov) have been the ideal times to travel to the region. However with a constant push of swells and low crowds the Outer Atolls is the ideal escape from the busy Male Atolls or Mentawais boat trip.
