Surf report and imagery provided by KabuNohi Resort owner/manager, Mark Flint:
August started the way July ended with playful 4-5 foot waves with the odd bigger set, the winds off-shore for most of the morning before light trades kicked in as temperatures rose through-out the day. With talk of a big swell on the way, guests took it easy in the surf, picking off a few waves in between chatting with new found friends in the lineup and those staying at the resort. Nias is a mellow spot and with a Christian majority faith in the local villages there is little to no localism, just a lot of respect for one another.
By mid August the big swells Nias holds so well had arrived. On the 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th August we were greeted with 6-8ft sets consistently rolling through Lagundri Bay. A good mate from South Newcastle, Tony Rae popped over to visit me and score some memorable waves during his trip.
By the 20th August, the swell slowly started to die down with 6ft sets and consistent 3-4ft rolling through which made it perfect for our World Surfaris clients.
To finish off the month we were giften amazing weather conditions. The wind had died down to less than 5 knots from the SE and consistent 3-4ft sets frequented Lagundri for all our guests and happy locals. Kiddies corner was extremely rippable, just like a skatepark!
I sit here on the deck at KabuNohi Resort, bintang in hand, watching non-surfing Chinese tourists take selfies on the reef and our guests enjoying rippable kiddies corner. The odd set coming through up the point too with a building swell that I hope to report on in the September report, until then, take care – Mark Flint
