Back in February 2018, Culburra Boardriders claimed victory in the Australian Boardriders Battle finals held at Newcastle Beach in pumping 4-6ft surf. Culburra is arguably one of Australias powerhouse clubs with some very talented surfers that include the well-known Wright family as well as rising QS surfers and brothers Tyran & Jordy Watson, stalwart, Jordan Dank and a long list of surfers showing they have depth for many years to come and will feature in these team events for a long time.
Also joining the Culburra team on this trip to Indo was World Surfaris Ambassador and 80’s and 90’s world beater – Gary ‘Kong’ Elkerton. Gary has been in training for a little over 6 months for the World Masters event taking place in Portugal from 18 – 23 September. Gary used the week with the Culburra boys as extra training in more powerful surf than he’s used to at home on the Sunshine Coast. By all accounts, the man they call Kong was surfing as well as ever and we look forward to seeing how he goes in Portugal against the likes of Tom Curren, Neco Padaratz, Shaun Tomson, Mark Occhilupo, Cheyne Horan and Martin Potter just to name a few. Make sure you tune in via the WSL to see our boy go for glory!
Hosting Gary and team Culburra was World Surfaris Bali Director, Michael Hill.
Hilly had been extremely excited about this trip before it was even won by Culburra. As a Cronulla lad himself he admitted it would have been nice to see Connor O’Learys team (Eloura) have a win but with Culburra on an hour or so South from his hometown he was more than happy to welcome them into a place he has called home for about 26 years!
The following video is what went down! Thank you to Surfing Australia’s, Owen Milne for the footage and we cant wait to see more.
