The overall feel of Lombok is so much quieter than Bali; the landscape mostly open but jungle-like in places and the locals were so friendly and happy... a down to earth, simple environment away from the crowds!
After a quick and painless half hour flight, I landed at the new Lombok International Airport where I immediately found my World Surfaris surf guide/driver and transferred the quick 20 minutes to the Family Hotel.
The Family is a clean and simple mid-range hotel with really spacious rooms; a large restaurant with western and local cuisine; a generous sized pool; and above all... very accommodating staff. It's also a very handy location for wandering amongst the street dining of Kuta Lombok.
The following day I spent roaming southern Lombok with the World Surfaris team seeing buffalo and monkeys; stopping to chat with the uber friendly locals; and checking out the pristine surf beaches of Mawun and Salong Blanak.... The natural scenery on Lombok is pure panoramic view after panoramic view.
That night I stayed at Kies Villas which has a very refreshing, modern feel to it and again, incredibly warm and welcoming staff. The restaurant menu is amazing and tapas can be enjoyed over a game of scrabble or a dip in the pool (with the underwater speakers :). Once or twice a week, movies are shown on the big screen... just grab a drink and chill out on the bean bags. Whilst the weather didn't cooperate, my night in one of the private villas watching the torrential rain from the comfort of my beautiful 4 poster bed upstairs... could have been very romantic... if I wasn't on a work trip! Downstairs of these very private villas is your lounge, living area and bathroom. For groups of friends or families I thoroughly recommend the incredible presidential villa with its own enormous pool. And coming soon to Kies Villas... a new two storey training centre - for yoga and the likes of underwater breath-holding training.
On to the Novotel Lombok I found a real piece of paradise on the beach. With a true 'resort feel' the Novotel is vast with multiple accommodation, dining and recreation options. There's a great beach vibe with many activities available... and the Mojito's from the beach bar weren't bad either.
