Where on the planet has the smartest & most effective Surf Management Plan?
Answer: Papua New Guinea
….no, seriously – it really does.
Surfing PNG it’s simple & safe - here's why..........
SAPNG (SURFING ASSOCIATION OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA) is the government body that provides a practical system that ensures that each Province within PNG has a firm foreign 20 maximum Surfer cap = NO CROWDS!!!
Driven by SAPNG President & keen surfer Andy Abel, the management plan is a blueprint for other countries in how it should be done. But the real genius is the local aspect of the management plan.
Each foreign surfer as part of their package is paying a small daily contribution to the local community run ‘Surf Club’. These contributions not only allow the club to manage the surfer numbers, it also supports the local villages within the province, pays for building/infrastructure, drives surfing/employment plans, contributes to education/medical & much, much more.
Herein lies the genius. Any traveler knows that PNG has some security concerns, but with every surfing guest directly supporting the community – the community ensures the surfers safety is paramount……it’s that simple.
Couple that with super consistent (but not overly massive) waves, stunning water, great fishing & good weather during surf season (October-April ) PNG is a must for surfers of any standard wanting to get away from Australian summer crowds & surf uncrowded paradise just to our north.
