World Surfaris Surf Travel Specialist, Ethan, is back from surfing his 12th different country, this time The Maldives. Read Ethan’s report below about his stay at the popular all-inclusive luxury resort – Hudhuranfushi Resort.
Hudhuranfushi Resort is truly a paradise, a short speedboat ride to the resort from the airport and I found myself on a pristine and luxurious private island. I arrived to find perfect, peeling, head-high waves rolling the length of the point. I made it from check-in to paddling out in under half an hour! I stayed in a Lohis Villa, only a 20 metre walk from the surf. The rooms are comfortable, clean and have ice-cold air conditioning.
A stay at Hudhuranfushi Resort includes delicious meals, drinks, speed boat airport transfers and unlimited surfing at Hudhuranfushi’s wave, Lohis, the most consistent wave in the Maldives. Lohis is a private wave, only surfers staying at the resort can surf the wave. There is a limit of 45 surfers at the resort at any one time. There was a full resort of 45 surfers during my stay and the majority of my surfs were shared with less than 10 people. I even had the line-up to myself on a couple of occasions! I surfed 3 or 4 times each day, as I had trouble sitting on the deck watching perfect waves go past all day long. We enjoyed an entire week of light offshore winds and fun swell which the Maldives is known for in its shoulder seasons. I also had a chance to take a few of the twice-daily boat trips (included in a World Surfaris Hudhuranfushi Package) to surf some of the other famous local waves including (but not limited to) Ninjas, Sultans, Honkeys and Jails. It is safe to say that I was absolutely surfed out by my fourth day!
Surf program directors Richard and Amy Kotch are excellent hosts. They manage the entire surf system at the resort along with their team of professional local Maldivian surf guides. All of the guides are experienced surfers and have an adept knowledge of the local conditions. Richard is a professional photographer and takes photos from the deck and the water. Introduce yourself to them at the surf office (overlooking the surf break) on your arrival and they will help you get familiarized with the surf.
My stay at Hudhuranfushi Resort was the surf trip of a lifetime. The entire trip from arrival to departure went smoothly. I can confidently say that I will be returning in the very near future.
