QUEENSLAND Boardriders Clubs are considered the ‘backbone’ of surfing in Queensland. Arguably, Clubs’ biggest contribution to the development of surfing is their ongoing commitment to nurturing and supporting burgeoning surfing careers across all areas of the sport.
A common denominator that gels Boardriders Clubs together in Queensland is the element of competition and following a recent ‘think tank’ session as well as a series of successful Boardriders Clubs meetings held on both the Sunshine and Gold Coast, the ‘Coast of Origin’ Interclub Series has been developed by Surfing Queensland in conjunction with the organisation’s affiliated Boardriders Club network.
The 2011 Coast of Origin series will consist of seven events, including three events on both the Gold and Sunshine Coast (two Area Challenges and one Regional Challenge on each coast) culminating in a State Challenge which will see the best Club surfers from the Sunshine Coast and far north go head to head with the Gold Coast.
Surfing Queensland is also proud to announce World Surfaris will play a supporting sponsorship role in the inaugural series before taking on a naming rights sponsorship of the Coast of Origin in 2012.
World Surfaris Managing Director Shaun Levings said his brand is stoked to be associated with Surfing Queensland, the Coast of Origin series and of course Club surfers throughout the state.
“Boardriders Clubs are the heart and soul of Australian surfing and a major reason for Australia being the number-one surfing nation in the world,” said Levings.
“Pitting Sunshine Coast Club surfers against their Gold Coast counterparts is ingenious and competition will be fierce,” he said.
“At World Surfaris we pride ourselves on catering to surfers from all walks of life with a range of unique surf adventures offering world-class perfection and Queensland Boardriders Clubs have a history of breeding surfers adept at handling all surf conditions.”
Over the years, many Queenslanders have progressed to the national and world stage of surfing as competitors, judges or officials. Within each Boardriders Club exists a certain level of history and pride amongst members. Clubs share a unified passion for surfing, mateship and particularly ‘their Club.’
Unique in their ability to foster a sense of community, Boardriders Clubs have attributed their continued success to those individuals who tirelessly devote their time and effort towards fostering an environment that facilitates competition and fun as well as providing valuable social frameworks for their young members.
Levings added that World Surfaris will also be looking to reward not only a Club’s top flight athletes, but the behind-the-scenes volunteers who contribute so much to the success of Queensland Boardriders Clubs.
“World Surfaris is also excited to be able to offer competitors, family members and fellow Queensland club surfers some awesome prizes and discounts on their next exotic surf trip, so watch this space for some big announcement relating to the upcoming series” he said.
The Coast of Origin series will include a range of male and female divisions across shortboards, longboards and SUP.
Clubs have been provided with an allocation of spots and will be nominating their best active Club members to compete in the first tier ‘Area Challenges.’ Progression into the Regional and State Challenge will adopt a similar format to a ‘team’s event.’ 1st and 2nd place from each heat, in each tier of competition will represent their Club as well as their Area, Region and/or Coast.
The 2011 Coast of Origin series is proudly supported by World Surfairs, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, ASL and Surfing Queensland.
