Unique Swell position
Simeulue has the longest fetch out of any Indonesian Island. It can utilize swells from the North West around India and the Maldives. This is a bonus as it does not have to rely on Southern swells like most other Indonesian surfing spots. It also picks up the full brunt of South swells as the island is situated at more of an angle than the other islands and is at the top of a 6km deep x 800mile trench. All this means that a stay at Aura resort is frequently accompanied by long period clean swell – every surfers dream.
Car/ Scooter/ Motor bike

Aura Surf Resort:
Have just returned from 7 nights at the brand new Aura Surf Resort on the island of Simuelue.
Departed Sydney at lunchtime on a Thursday, flew to Singapore and then Medan where I stayedovernight at the brand new Marriot hotel for only $100 in a suite on the top floor…very 5 star. Myflight to Simuelue left the next morning at 6.30am (airport 10min from Marriot), I was picked up byAustralian surf guide Clay from Aura on arrival in Simuelue….20 minutes later I was paddling into aperfectly shaped, glassy, 4ft left hander. Looking back at the beach with the newly built bungalowsperched between the beach and the jungle clad hillsides behind them was a post card image fromanother time, hard to believe I’d been in Sydney less than 24hrs earlier. The 7 days rolled by with the same perfect waves every day, even when the sea breeze came up late in the morning it was more side-shore with plenty of clean faces still waiting to be hacked at.
The waves peaks up just beyond a deep water boil with a pretty straight forward take off splittingleft and right. While the left is faster with a better barrel section the right hander showed a lot ofpromise especially on the bigger sets with a couple of super fun, very whack-able bowl sections. The evenings glassed off again providing another couple of hours of theme park fun with stunningsunsets at the end of every arvo session. Clay was always on hand to help out with requests aswas Ross the Aura boat mechanic and all round handy-man. I ate some of the best tropical fruitI’ve ever had, some unusual stuff which always adds to the experience, very good basic localwarungs just down the road from Aura…super-cheap and as much spice as you can handle.
Every morning a coconut picked from a tree on the property, with a neat hole macheted into the top would be waiting on the ocean facing deck of my hut, (the best thing in the world to guzzle after a 2 hour morning session!).
Aside from the surfing I met some the nicest, most laid back people you’ll ever come across. Theisland has very little tourism (100 per year someone quoted to me!), so people are really interestedin where you’re from and have always got a great big smile when you’re cruising past on yourscooter (preferred method of transport on the island). I was a amazed at how little traffic there isbeing lucky to see 3 or 4 cars a day, the dug out wooden boats with the fisherman doing the wholejob by paddle! Every where you look it could easily be the scene for a painting from 17th century.Luckily for me most of the mod cons are available at Aura…so don’t panic! Clay was also an awesome tour guide and we checked out some other spots that looked like they had amazing potential for surf but the conditions were so good straight out front from the Aura that I was happy staying where I was in a little piece of paradise that time forgot.
