The first event of the Coast of Origin kicked off last weekend. The initial rounds aim to produce the best surfers from both the Gold & Sunshine Coast’s. The competition continues to produce some amazing surfing and will ultimately pit the best of the Gold Coast surfers against their Sunshine Coast counterparts. With Sunshine Coast surfers claiming the honor last year this year’s competition ramps up.

Gold Coast, Queensland, Tuesday 17th July, 2012:
Sunshine Coast Area Challenge (North)
Noosa Boardriders once again put on an outstanding display of surfing in the Sunshine Coast Area Challenge (North) at Sunshine Beach, with the host club stamping their authority in the early rounds and maintaining their momentum throughout the day.
Noosa Boardriders (140 points) capped of their day with a first place in the Tag-Team event, before claiming the overall title of Sunshine Coast Area Challenge (North) Champions, with Coolum Boardriders (108 points) and Mudjimba Boardriders (65 points) placing second and third respectively.
Noosa Boardriders posted strong performances in several divisions, with high profile surfers including Dean Brady (Open Men’s), Harry Bryant (U/18 Boy’s) and Naomi Stevic (Open Women’s) leading the way. Coolum Boardriders’ campaign was also bolstered by Matt Williams (Open Men’s) and Isabella Nichols (U/18 Girl’s) who both posted excellent results in their respective divisions.
Sunshine Coast Area Challenge (South)
From the onset of competition at Anne Street Reef, Currumundi, it was clear that the Sunshine Coast Area Challenge (South) would be an extremely close affair.
Rivals North Shore Boardriders and WindanSea Boardriders, shared the lead on numerous occasions throughout the day, before WindanSea Boardriders (133 points) eventually put a stop to back-to-back wins by North Shore Boardriders (105 points), with Kawana Boardriders (70 points) finishing in third place respectively.
WindanSea Boardriders posted convincing wins in the Open Men’s division with Wade Goodall performing outstandingly as well as posting solid performances by Eli Steele in the U/18 Boy’s division. North Shore Boardriders were equal to the challenge proving the dominant Club in Over 35 Men’s division with Matt Clark and Robbie Sherwell leading the way and in the U/16 Boy’s division with Kai Hing outclassing his rivals.
Gold Coast Area Challenge (South)
Snapper Rocks Surfriders once again proved their dominance in the Gold Coast Area Challenge (South) at Currumbin Beach, with the champion club racing away to an early lead and never looking in doubt of claiming yet another victory.
Snapper Rocks Surfriders (128 points) capped of their day with a first place in the Tag-Team event, before claiming the overall title of Gold Coast Area Challenge (South) Champions, with Alley Boardriders (88 points), Kirra Surfriders (75 points) and Palm Beach Boardriders (46) placing second to fourth respectively.
Snapper Rocks Surfriders posted strong performances in several divisions, with high profile surfers including Kyuss King (U/14 Boy’s), Mitch Parkinson (U/18 Boy’s) and Jay Phillips (O/35 Men’s) leading the way.
Gold Coast Area Challenge (North)
Northern Gold Coast club rivals North End Boardriders and MNM Boardriders didn’t want to give each other an inch as they battled for the lead in the Gold Coast Area Challenge (North) at Miami Beach.
MNM Boardriders and North End Boardriders, had a see-sawing battle, before MNM Boardriders (117 points) eventually halted North End Boardriders (99 points), with Christian Surfers/Burleigh Longboard Club (35 points), Point Lookout Boardriders (18 points) and Burleigh Heads Boardriders finishing third to fifth respectively.
The seven-event World Surfaris Coast-of-Origin, sees surfers of all disciplines and ages, represent their respective boardriding clubs, their region and ultimately their ‘coast’ – uniting Queensland’s grass-roots surfing community in an amazing interclub competition.
Sunshine Coast ‘Regional Challenges’ and Gold Coast ‘Regional Challenges’ will commence next weekend (July 21-22) and see the best qualifying surfers from the Area Challenges in the North and Area Challenges in the South compete to finalise representative teams ahead of the concluding ‘State Challenge’ in September, where a champion ‘Coast’ will be crowned for 2012.
