Low Season Mentawais & Telos: Mellower, uncrowded & cheaper!

I’m probably never going to charge big sets or throw myself into a very advanced wave- at least not yet. I’m much happier surfing within my comfort zone tackling the occasional big set when or if it rolls in. That’s why Low season waves are so appealing. For example take Mentawais and Sumatra frequented by surf trekkers every April – September the Mentawais and Sumatran regions see a lot of surfers paying homage to the amazing swell produced in the Indian Ocean over the peak season. Surfers come from all over to face off against some the most challenging waves in the world, which is great if you can handle staring down the line at a 6-8’ barrell.  But for the mellower surfer it’s nice to know that the Mentawais/Sumatra region offers amazing waves during the low season (Feb-April & Oct to Nov). Surf that breaks at a steady non-intimidating 3ft +. Nice long peelers that provide all the thrills without the consequence. Best of all the low season offers even less crowds and as usual some great off-peak saving to attract your interest.
