With Summer in full swing we’ve been getting some great surf reports. This latest Cherry comes in from Tupira Surf Club from the last two weeks and yep you guessed it its been another couple of great weeks.

Super reasonable rates and some spaces are still available so if you’re in you better get it sorted if not 2012-2013 looks good but prime spaces are already getting look- ins.

Tupira Surf Club  Christmas and New Year Update

Christmas was not such a cracker with small 1-2 foot waves for almost the whole week with a nice new swell arriving for new years day (their last) to let the guests see the potential of what could have been.

The following week was much improved with consistent 2-3 foot surf with one day around 4 foot. Not so many fish around and the afternoon winds were well above average, lucky Tupira is offshore almost every morning and most evenings.

The New Year is only getting better at Tupira. The second week of the year was pumping with nothing under 3 foot and two short swells between 4-5 foot. I cannot believe I just left for a couple of days to stay in town as the forecast is looking really good and there are only four guests in camp. Lucky they’re fit and frothing as there will be many good waves to be had.

Hi All,

Before the big Christmas New Year break I hit up Amy Kotch for a Pohnpei Surf Club report. The pics came in with the below report, apparently the surf wasn’t that great but then you compare it to your local and you’ll begin to wonder if perhaps our beloved guides are being a bit swell spoiled.

“I know I said that it hasn’t been very good by P-Pass standards, and that I didn’t have much to report on, but I have just been sorting and deleting photo’s from the last few weeks and realize that even though it’s not been perfect we have still been surfing most days. Consider also that the most crowded day was five guys and girls in the water and that the vibe in the lineup and in the camp has been great…. Maybe this is worthy of a report!?!?”

Here it is October, Already.

The season seems a blur of surf and eating!  What an amazing surf season the Indian Ocean has served up for us in 2011. We have been truly blessed , It’s starting to get quiet out here , the guests trickling in, and the boats calling it the end of the season , but the Mother Ocean just keeps on sending swell after swell . This coming weekend , there is another big pulse 6.5 feet 20 seconds and southeasterly winds, which is perfect for our neighborhood. We would like to say a big thank you to World Surfaris and all the guests the discovered our little paradise this opening season , for making this a great first season for us.  For those of you that made it out, we hope to see you sooner than later, and those still dreaming of Indo barrells, we hope to see you smiling in the surf soon.

The finals for the Coast of Origin are sneaking around the corner, October is less than a few weeks  away with the finals being held on the weekend of the 8th & 9th at the Gold Coast the excitement is building.

(If you’re under a rock and are wondering what’s this all about click here to get up to date).  DON’T FORGET THAT CLUBS STILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO SURF WILDCARD SURFERS!!! If they’re around the Coast of Origin series could see some of surfing A-List go head to head.

The previous events held respectively at the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast saw regional qualifiers go head to head to secure a spot to compete at the finals. The finals will see the best Sunshine Coast surfers versus the best Gold Coast surfers in a titanic battle to determine once and for all which of these two iconic coastlines hatches the best surfers.

Handhu’s surf guide the very awesome ‘Yursee’ has sent through the latest surf report from the September Maldives Male and central Atolls trip. Full report as below and pics included

Day 1

Plan: Went to ying yang first, then went to check a reef on the west coast.

Conditions:Ying Yang was bad, but the left was very clean and nice 3-4 ft. We had SE winds

Guests: At first very unhappy but so stoked to see the left working

Day 2

Plan: Stayed at the left again

Conditions: Was another great day. But was a bit smaller

Guests:  Stoked!!

Day 3

Plan: Stayed at the left first and then went to ying yang and went fishing on the way. Later surf Ying Yangs

Conditions: Fishing was great, caught an 11ft Merlin and a sail fish. The left was small but great.

Guests: The best thing was the fish. Everyone was so happy and amazed

Day 4

Plan: Surfed the small left near Ying Yang then left to Mikados at noon Mikado’s

Conditions: The Left was smaller and windblown. But mikado was great at 5 ft but had company

Guests: We had a boat called blue shark turn up at the break. 10 guests with longboard Aussies wasn’t too bad we had plenty of waves

Day 5

Plan: Mikado’s

Conditions: Great surf again. But got stormy afternoon the other boat had left.

Guests: They were very happy till the storm but weren’t too bummed since they had so many good waves.

Day 6

Plan: Good surf again in Mikado.

Conditions: It was great surf but a bit smaller. We had company again.

Guests: Waves were small so had a hard time with so many people. But still there was waves guests were  happy

Day 7

Plan: Early morning Mikados then left to Mauroofs point in Dhaalu.

Conditions: Still good at Mikado but too crowded so we left. Mauroofs was ok till about 4pm then a storm came along

Guests: Very happy to surf Mauroofs even though wasn’t very good conditions hoping for cleaner waves.

Day 8

Plan: Surfed at Mauroofs and left to North Male

Conditions: Mauroofs got worse and was a very rough trip to male atoll. 13 hrs but worth it

Guests: Rough channel crossing maybe a bad idea rough seas

Day 9

Plan: Surfed at sultans. Went to Pasta’s for a drink.

Conditions: Was 3-4 ft. Not very clean

Guests: Surf was a bit disappointing but enjoyed the day!

Day 10

Plan: Again at sultans. But we went to Cokes just to visit the island

Conditions: Was a bit windy at sultans

Guests: Was very happy to go on the island.

Day 11

Plan: Came back to Sultans

Conditions: Was very clean best day at Sultans. There was a goup of pros so hard to catch many waves

Guests: Were very happy with the conditions

So it’s almost the weekend! The minutes are ticking by at an achingly slow snail pace. It’s about this time that we secretly start checking swell reports and laying the foundations of our perfect weekend and yep! Wouldn’t you know it skunked again….. So when Scardy sent an email through with pics of one of our recent clients shredding the waves in the Maldives (Hudhuranfushi guests Steve and Dane Leslie) a small part of me wanted to cry.

Wherever you are this weekend I hope there is swell with off shore winds, perfect shorey’s and point breaks, left’s and right’s in abundance graciously keeping the crowd spread out and at minimum’s and if not well… these pics may just may just upset you too.

Hi All,

Gav Clark our Ocean Dancer surf guide and super medic is on site at Teahupoo for the Billabong Tahiti Pro. Yesterday’s lay day due to the massive swell drew the tow boys out for some of the most death defying surfing ever witnessed. Gav was able to sit in the channel and watch it from the relative ‘safety’ of deeper water. His report as follows with the pics is pretty amazing.

Well the last 2 days have been the most unbelievable days of surfing I have ever seen and I hope you all have been able to witness it on the net.

It started yesterday as finally the predicted swell started to arrive with 8ft plus waves hitting the reef. Due to the wind from the last few days it was far from perfect Chopes but still had some awesome barrels and the level of surfing was awesome.

To day was a whole new kettle of fish as we woke this morning to find a further huge swell had arrived. A lay day was called due to the size and just as well we had evacuated all of our equipment from our medical hut the night before because as the tide came in waves were coming under the judging tower and then surging up over the point and through our hut. Throughout the morning the swell built as had been predicted, the only people who could handle these conditions would be Tow Surfers.

Over the last few days the top tow surfers had been arriving from all over the world in anticipation of this swell and they were not to be disappointed. What we witnessed today was the most unbelievable day of surfing I have ever seen. Due to it being called a lay day and due to French law we are unable to treat people in a official manner, not that did not end up doing that anyway, so seeing that we had the day off Shorty and I decided midmorning to go out and watch the tow surfing. We had been watching it earlier from our house and it looked big but due to the distance was hard to see just how big it was. We scored a lift out from one of the Water Patrol guys and what we saw was mind blowing as we found our selves out amongst the biggest waves I have ever seen.

We spent the best part of 3 hours sitting on our boards watching guys tow into waves ranging from 15 to 25ft plus monster tubes. The scene was unbelievable as the lineup was crowded with jet ski’s, guys on boards and heaps of boats all watching the show of a life time. You just can not describe the feeling of sitting there no more than 10 mtrs away looking into these monster tubes and watching guys get the barrels of their lives and in some cases the hidings  of their lives. This was life and death stuff as we are talking about a 25ft waves breaking in 6ft of water over a razor sharp reef. Almost every person that got nailed, hit the reef and took skin off. The worst of the day was when one of the girls who towed into a smaller wave, flicked off only to be confronted by a huge set behind and it and then two following it which then flogged her to the point of almost drowning. Her only saving grace was that Poto (The best Water Patrolman in Tahiti) was out there and he raced in on his jet ski and grabbed her out of the impact zone. Shorty and I checked her out and found her bleeding from the ear and had swallowed some water so she was jet ski’d back to land and sent to hospital. She joined Dean Morrison there who had a suspected broken ankle and a Brazilian surfer with a serious knee injury from earlier encounters with the reef.

On a lighter note and just to describe the power of these waves, Bruce Irons who just happened to get two of the biggest barrels today, one which we reckon some where between 25 to 30ft got nailed while coming out of his second one and had his boardshorts torn right off and was then was picked up by the jet ski and driven right through the middle of the crowd in the lineup with only his Buoyancy Jacket on much to the delight of the cheering crowd.

As we were about to paddle in, George the guy who takes us out surfing in his boat asked us to jump onboard. He a bunch of Aussie photographers on board so for the rest of the afternoon Shorty and I had the best seat in the house as we were in the number one spot and over the next 3 hours we witnessed the biggest waves and the best barrel riding to be seen. George, the Photographers and even the Water Patrol guys said this was equal or if not bigger and the best waves than anything they had ever seen before.

Shorty and I finally got back to shore as the sun set, cracked a cold beer or 3 and talked about the most amazing day of surfing we had witnessed and as for my Bucket List, I have now crossed off seeing Chopes in all her glory.

The swell is supposed to drop tomorrow so the comp should be back on again and while it will be probably be in awesome waves I sure it will just be just that bit insignificant after todays events.

Shorty has just arrived with a fresh cold beer so time to catch you later.

The event will pitch the best surfers from Gold Coast board riders Clubs against the best surfers from Sunshine Coast board riders Clubs. With the initial challenges already completed the next regional event is sneaking around the corner and the patriotic and competitive air continues into the next round.

The next event is the regional qualifier held on August 6&7^th. The event will see Kawana play host to some of the hottest surf talent from the Sunshine Coast. The all in event will pit a range of competitors of different ages against each other in SUP’s, long board and short board divisions. The winners of the event will compete against their Gold Coast counterparts in October in a decider of titanic proportions.

With the seeming inexhaustible winter swells we’ve been having lately the competition is proving a real success. The patriotic nature of hosts clubs and proud locals has produced a fierce but admirable competitive spirit that has attracted some big names to all events.

On the Sunny Coast the likes of Dean Brady, Chris Friend, Marty Simpson, Tulley St John, Quinn Bruce, Ziggy Alberts, Kai Hing, Reef Heazelwood, Eli Steele, Jake Fissenden and Laura Poincini, Chianna Ireland from the ladies have been slogging their all and will no doubt shine at the upcoming regional qualifier round.

The Gold Coast has thrown in some of their big names too. Sporting the likes of Wayne Bartholomew, Mitch Crews, Mark Richardson, Mitch Parkinson, Shane Bevan, Noah Lane, Thomas Woods and Guy Omerod.

Both the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast have enviable surf reputations and have produced some of the Worlds finest surfing talent. Names like Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Julian Wilson and Josh Kerr to name only four of the hundreds maybe thousands of premiere surfers that have spawned form these regions. The long back and forth between these two coastal regions will be decided in events not to be missed. With prestigious Surf reputations on the line no event should be overlooked World Surfaris will keep you up to date with live feeds, video coverage and regular reports as each round progresses.  Stay tuned for more…..
