Aura Surf Resort Simeulue has sent through their latest surf report. As usual swell has been pumping, Shaun Levings the boss, all round good guy and champ of champs (thanks for reading Shaun). Has just returned from a trip up there. Bali 30 years ago was the general census, we will post something about the trip soon. In the meantime feel free to salivate over the latest report.

David Mesnard, Ocean Dancer owner, skipper, free diver extraordinaire and all round good guy has added an amazing dimension to their trips.

David Mesnard is teaching breath holding techniques to guests onboard the Ocean Dancer. The classes are proving to be very inspiring and for any surfer that has struggled with a hold down the lessons are extremely useful.

On board Ocean Dancer this week the guests experienced their first free diving course in between surf sessions. Owner David Mesnard and his wife Gaelle are now sharing their expert knowledge in free diving; teaching techniques in attitude, breathing and mind control that will help you build self confidence and mental strength in and out of the water. The session is simple, yet powerful, and anyone on board can do it and achieve immediate results. “I was always surprised at how many good surfers come on board and how little they could hold their breath underwater. So I decided to share my experience on free diving to help them feel more confident in the surf and in particular when they get held down by waves. People can triple the time spent holding their breath under water after their first session!”

Recently in Australia, David shared his passion for “free diving” as a Motivational Speaker for the Fitzpatrick Group on the Gold Coast and the Hunter Valley. Results were outstanding and

people continue to build their self confidence and mental strength for any water sport and life situations.

“This is very cool! I went from 26 seconds on my first attempt, to 1 minute and 37 seconds after one lesson. It was an unexpected highlight for my trip, and the techniques will definitely help me in big waves and other life stresses. Thanks Heaps Guys!!”

I’m in the process of getting something down about the Telo Island trip that Justin and I recently went on.  It was an amazing trip, Staying at Resort Latitude Zero and Telo Island Lodge are the kind of experiences you’re not going to forget, ever.  The work loads been a bit hectic of late, still catching up. Plus the brief blog has started to take on aspects of war and peace.  Anyway here’s a couple an excerpt if anyone is interested……

I’m sitting on the veranda Peely looks over to me with an accusing look of disbelief as my last words sink in. “This is your first trip to Indo?”

“Yeah,” I reply

“It’s ruined for you now mate. It doesn’t get any better than this….. You’ve been spoilt.”

In a way I know he’s right.

Staring out from the veranda which has officially been dubbed the ‘marketing’ veranda, we have just shot the shit for around two hours, I tip my hat to Peely he sure can keep the conversation going. But it’s enjoyable, relaxing even, I’m beginning to grasp the concept of Island time, the easy going nature of the place has started to define the edges of another reality for me, one not defined by rhythmic and steady ticking hands, my email inbox, back breaking responsibilities or short 10 minute caffeine breaks I have glimpsed and begun to embrace ‘Island time’.

I’m impressed, we’ve filled two hours with a steady hum of ideas and new directions; we’ve defined what’s wrong with the surf industry, steadily navigated a suitable course for its future and then started on more mundane problems like the future of surf travel and I think even global peace. Sadly, apart from the beginning of this paragraph I cannot remember a verbatim sentence of it, or even one of the ideas that buzzed and blipped into my mind that afternoon.

What I can remember is that they were damn good ideas and they were going to change the face of the surf travel industry for ever and potentially even the world.

The bright day afternoon was fading at this stage, birds flew over the lagoon and the ensuing silence was broken by only a few revered noises that belonged to this place.

Those sounds belong here, it is there place; the sound of crashing waves from a stand out set, the steady, constant clicking of the hermit crabs as they pick the lawn and the occasional grindstone flick as Peely lights another cigarette, usually I abhor smoking, but it belongs here and its as much a part of the entire setting as the afternoon sun, the white hermit crabs and the waves breaking off the lagoon. Peely can smoke all he wants, right now he could blow the filthy tendrils in my face and I would breath it in absently, I don’t care, I’m on island time.

Here the sun becomes your watch and time is easily defined by two notable differences: Night time and Day time. Night time I sleep and gather my energy, day time I eat and surf, it is a gloriously simple recipe and it’s perfect………..

……………. I desperately need to pee, two huge coffees in Singapore and all the juice and water that come in those little cups are screaming to get out. In the que for customs, jumping from foot to foot as my bladder screams and kicks like a ranting spoilt child, I read the penalty for taking drugs into Indo- DEATH! Jesus these guys don’t mess around!!! I realise with a dizzying clarity that I’m sweating, pale and ruffled. I look under fed at the best of times 10 hours on a airplane food diet has only exasperated this, on top of this  I’m jumping from foot to foot in my fidgeting pee dance. I’m carrying aspirin and Malaria meds, the customs guys look mean as shit, short with accusing eyes, small, sure, but they probably all know some secret Indonesian version of Ninjistu, an icy tendril weaves its way down my back. “Oh God, I’m screwed, they’re going to take me into a small room, where I’ll undoubtedly wet my self, then they’ll plant drugs on me and I’ll have to bribe my way out of it, that’s how they work right, Right!?”  I stop, I stop quickly, I force composure – God I need to pee. But there’s no way I’m going down like this.…. Unsurprisingly, I pass customs just fine, I don’t think that they care, in retrospect I don’t think my aspirin or Malarone even registers with them. It was embarrassingly all in my head. Business calls “To the loo”. The toilets in Indo are ‘squatters’ there is probably a nicer word for them but when you need to pee as much as I do it all equals one thing – Relief.  I stand dizzyingly high above the pan on the ground and aim with surgical precision.

The Telos island lodge guys scoop us away from the airport we don’t touch our bags, not once, its all been taken care of.  Standing in the bright sun I look at the passive faces of the group we have joined. We each share that look of passive stupidity unique to tourists and the bovine. A silver minivan picks us up from that airport. The driver expertly ducks and weaves though the busyness of Medan. The driving here is nuts, everyone has a scooter, a ‘beep’ is not a censor covering a well deserved expletive. It’s a polite, ‘excuse me, I’m just letting you now I am here, if you could just not run me over I will pay the gesture forward and one day you will not be knocked of your scooter’. A scooter also serves as Australia’s most packed soccer mum car I watch amazed as whole families glide by and weave with preternatural ability, no one is hurt and the flow continues. A huge incomprehensibly complex dance that works seamlessly our silver minivan is a part of that flow. After that we arrive at a flash hotel, like James Bond flash, we take a few relaxing drinks, a couple of the guys grab a bite to eat, I nap on a couch. Then its repeat; silver minivan, dense swerving traffic, airport, check in, small wait, small drive to tiny plane….. This is our plane to the island!?  Justin (well travelled, travel consultant and all round good guy) informs me that the flight into Telos will most likely make me soil my skinny jeans. It’s honestly not that bad, but after touch down you realise That Kansas is somewhere over the rainbow and you not surprisingly you couldn’t care less.

Looking at the calendar there are Red Crosses and leading up to the day with a big red circle around it. That day is now a frantic 1 day away, oddly enough I still can’t wait.  With 1 more sleep to go until we head off we’ve been keeping a close eye on the Mentawais surf, these shots have come in from Telo Island Lodge from yesterday and today. To anyone marking down the days till the big off the 2011 season is off to a promising start……… if you haven’t booked a trip yet, get onto it- NOW!!!

         Another entry has come in from our favorite Micronesian operator Allois from Pohnpei Surf Club.  Since the season kicked off in November Pohnpei has been handing out wave perfection like a well oiled machine.  The images below are from the last two weeks and look a tad gnarly for most, but with the wind staying down and the new swell said to be a comfortable 4ft, P-Pass is looking as welcoming as a cup of tea from an old friend.   The 2010/2011 season has truly stood out as one of the most remarkable seasons to date. The key words ‘consitent quality’ pretty much sums it up and with one month left in the season you don’t want to miss out. Click here and get on to it!!

The below is the latest from Allois summing up last weeks swell…….

This last swell really belonged to the goofy footers. What a week it was. Six days of six to twelve feet. Absolutely no winds for the duration of the swell. We even surfed a prefect left on the east side which is usually on shore during this time of the year.
Wade, Ried, Barney, Aren, Briga, Donald, James and Martin from Hawaii, Jason, Jeff, Jorge and Ray (The Bodyboard crew), Adrian, Nathan, Ray, Allan, Brad and Mal from the Gold Coast and Kadu, Formiga and his wife Carol from Brazil. Thank you all for coming. I hope you enjoyed your stay with us as much I as enjoyed having you guys around.
As today, most left and the swell held on for another two days. I surfed alone last evening. Looks like a few small swells on the way for the weekend and early next week.

        Matanivusi Surf resort Fiji, doesn’t usually send us a lot through. The below images came in yesterday afternoon from Brian and Donna the owners after they caught some summer sets with guests. 

Since the 2010 Fiji Surfing decree lifted the exclusivity on surf breaks guests have been enjoying access to a number of world renown breaks. The initial fears of overcrowding seem groundless and Fiji is has become a real oppurtunity for anyone wanting to score some wave Pacific wave Perfection.
