Admist all the hoo- haa coming from the Indian Ocean season, its nice to know the South Pacific is still producing some epic swells for the enjoyment of guests.  Sa’ Moana Surf resort produces very, very consistent swell. If you’ve ever wanted to do a surf trip to the south pacific then this place might just be the X on your map!

Unfortunately the Sa’Moana resort camera wasn’t working so no new pics but we’ve added a few of our favourites just to keep up apperances.  All shots are from the 2010 season so far enjoy and get planning today!

 Monday 9^th to15^th of August

Monday No surfers in House

Tuesday   With only one surfing guest in house and small and windy conditions they headed to Wakas for a few fun ones. They were surfing by themselves which made the average conditions even better. Chest to head high side offshore fun wackable walls.

Wednesday  The new crew arrived today with a slight increase in swell to greet them. Wakas was the choice for their first surf and they scored really fun waves. Slightly overhead with side offshores made for an excellent first surf in Samoa.

Thursday  Awoke to hard trade winds and increase in swell so the call was to head to Pebbles for the hard offshores. Large mixed swell but hard off shores made it a little tricky to choose the good ones and some wipeouts were had as well as some great barrels in 1ft to 2ft overhead sets.

Friday  Strong winds again and so they headed out to Devil’s Island for some offshores in the mixed swell. The Island offered up some well overhead sets and very hard side shores. This was a short session as they headed to Coathangers for a look but the wind was still too strong with 30knts.

Saturday  Lighter winds greeted the crew this morning and they headed to Pebbles for some really fun waves coming all the way from the outside to the inside Guillotine for some long rides. With a group of 8 surfers conditions were right to break up the crowd with some focused on the outside and some on the inside Guillotine. Solid overhead sets on the outside and head high on the Guillotine.

Sunday  Calm conditions in the morning gave them a window to head to Ytops to sample a new wave for the group and they scored again with solid overhead sets with good barrels and bowling walls. The wind eventually came after a good 2 1/2hr session for a bumpy ride back to the resort.

         For those who have been following the ’surf aid’ surfers 4 Padang story the below will be of interest to you. It can’t always be about hard core surf trips, amazing boat charters or surf resorts without a care to the host community. World Surfaris were proud to be a key sponsor of the Surfers 4 Padang initiative and stoked that we helped rasie $8825 for the victims of the September earthquakes.

The prize up for grabs was a spot on our Mentawais Surf Charter the Santa Lusia. Mat Butel the lucky bugger won the draw and he’s trip was a success read on for details.

The Surf Aid International “Surfers for Padang” fundraiser event at Cafe LaMonde, Kirra, in November 2009 was a great success. Over $8825  was raised for victims of the September earthquake in the Padang region. Throughout the afternoon great music from Beau Young, Matt Pitts, Matt McHugh and Ash Grunwald was at times almost drowned out by the increasingly lubricated local crew. As the evening progressed some of the conversations turned to plans for the raffle prize, “If one of us wins it, we’ll all go”, “lets pool our tickets and split the prize”. When drawn by SAI’s Kirk Willcox the room was dead quiet… Unbelievably, I had won a World Surfaris holiday on the Santa Lusia to the Mentawai islands! Kicks, punches and abuse followed as I stumbled up to claim my prize. “Rigged!” someone yelled out in reference to me helping spot bids for Andy Mac as he MC’d the charity Auction. Kirk calmed down the jealous mob with a few kind words and the celebrations continued with punching replaced by handshakes and pats on the back.

After setting a date for late May my plans were foiled by a shoulder injury courtesy of a one foot close out and a shallow Lacey’s bank. The popular Santa Lusia was heavily booked in advance so I nabbed one of a few remaining births in late July. Fortunately, the mostly WA crew were a great bunch and the trip went very smoothly. With my experience in sports injuries, there were some relieved punters when inevitable problems arose. On day one we were greeted with a decent swell at Lances which waned over a couple of days. Ryan, our Hawaiian skipper with a penchant for Aussie ethos, managed to find us plenty of waves in the varying winds and 2-4ft swell that spanned the majority of our stay. Our course took us from Katiet to Playgrounds in the North, Thunders and Macaronis in the South and finally back to HT’s and Lances Left. Despite fun times in idealic locations it seemed the trip was doomed for ‘just good’ waves as the swell forecast kept pushing the impending bump further away each time we looked.

As we pulled up to HT’s on our second last day, epic conditions were evident with solid sets doubling up from the ‘office’ and funnelling into the inside channel. Half a dozen boats full of cheering spectators hooted at deep tubes and whistled as sets approached. At days end, more than one boat skipper had concluded that we’d experienced some of the best HT’s in a couple of years. An early arrival at HT’s on our final day revealed pumping sets once again. A slight ruffle led Ryan to decide we’d best cruise around to Lances left for a day glassy conditions followed by a farewell HT sesh on our way back to Padang. We were all stoked to finish on a high note.

Thanks to the everyone on the Santa Lusia (It’s a budget boat but very comfy and was highly rated by everyone on board including those who’d experienced other boats in the region), World Surfaris and in particular David Scard and SAI for all their efforts and success in the region.

Monday 12th of July to Sunday 18^th of July

Monday  With the steady south swell continuing and calm winds the lads had a cruisy couple looking for some mellow surf and as they were the only surfers in house, they headed to the always playful Mal’s for some fun soft right hand walls with nice reform inside sections. Conditions were perfect with no wind and clean chest to head high. Then they headed into Kiddies Corner for some waist high waves to finish off the trip.

Tuesday  A consistent south swell again and calm winds. A father and son had arrived and keen for their first surf and headed out to Pebbles to find nice overhead super clean walls connecting from outside to inside with Guillotine section, always a highlight. The All Zone option headed to Salani Right and Rustys for well overhead clean rights until the wind picked up at the last minute at Rustys.

Wednesday   A bit of a bump up in size today but still a strong south swell with calm conditions so the call was to head to Wakas. On arrival at 9:30am there were a few guys out but by 10:00am everyone left and they had epic Wakas to themselves. Nice overhead barreling walls absolute glass and 2 guys out. EPIC!

Thursday  The cruisy surfer couple were keen to get back to Mal’s while the father and son were on a tour to hand feed turtles. The swell had turned slight east and offered up chest to head high peaks with the fun inside reforms nice and clean conditions  before a light trade had began.

Friday  A new group of surfers arrived to wake up to strong trade winds so the call was Pebbles for a quick first surf with well overhead sets and hard off shore barrels with steep drops, sunny clear skies and no one else around.

Saturday    Strong trades kicked in early again and the crew headed to Wakas for some fun down the line walls in side offshore conditions of head high to overhead sets. On the way the crew were greeted by the magical Samoan Spinner Dolphins who guided them into the break.

Tropical Paradise indeed!

Sunday  Prevailing trade winds again for the morning and with a small south and east wind swell they headed to Outside Siumu for some playful lefts, then hit Wakas for a quickie session, until stopping at Pebbles on the way back to the resort for some small but clean fun barrels. Hints of a new swell on the way for next week!

More fun waves in the Maldives!

It was always going to be difficult to follow our last report of barrels and more barrels. When Amy mentioned that our latest Maldives Swell Journal was due, she asked me, “What are you going to write? Are you going to say that it’s not been very good?” As I paused for a moment, thinking back over the last two weeks, the phrase “Groundhog Day” came to mind – The World Surfaris guests based here at Hudhuran Fushi have been able to surf twice a day, every day, in very fun, super consistent, 3-5ft waves in some of the nicest water in the world. The swell has been out of the S/SE with SW/W wind pretty much every day. We did get a couple glassy, apre squall afternoons, which enabled a quick surf on the lefts, but most sessions have been at the rights of Jails and Sultans. 

OK, so that’s it from me for now, less variety than usual and not many stand up pits but all things considered still a great two weeks of waves. The Lohi’s bar has been rockin and the world cup party is in full effect. Good times out here at Hudhuran Fushi.

Post script. This morning (05/07/10) the wind changed back to light W/NW. We have just returned from a great surf at Chickens where picture perfect, sheet glass lefts were running for 200 meters down the point …..

Monday 14^th of June to Sunday 20t^h of June

Monday   Our guests being totally surfed out with the last few days of waves decided that today was a family day and headed to the Lava Cava swim-thru and natural wonder sinkhole and then a nature hike to stand next to an 80 metre waterfall. No Surfing today.

Tuesday   With family time taken care of it was back in the water and the early morning trip paid off with Pebbles producing clean and really fun overhead walls with barrels. With only 4 surfers out they had the pick of the sets. The non-surfer guests headed out on a day trip to kayak on our brand new sit on top kayaks to a Volcanic Crater Island located on the Wild East Coast for some excellent snorkeling and exploring for the kids in tide pools and along the beaches of the island.

Wednesday   Exhausted from the adventurous day the crew decided to sleep in this morning and head to Apia, the capital for some shopping and sight seeing of the islands North Side in the afternoon. No Surfing Today.

Thursday   With strong winds and an increasing swell the crew headed north to find some shelter from prevailing trades and scored really fun Pudding Rock shoulder to head high. They were so excited to get out no- one took photos. Sorry  

Friday   An early morning trip to Boulders found a little bumpy solid overhead swell with rain squalls and 10 guys out.  But after a short while they left and the sun broke thru the rain clouds and lit up the ocean, calmed the winds, and it turned good just for our three surfer guests only. Sharing sets and hooting for each other to go with no one else out. Experience pays off at Sa’Moana Resort.

Saturday  With some heavy trade winds blowing the whole island it took the ALL ZONE Option to find the best waves the island had to offer. They found them and at Missions and Coathangers. Coathangers was fun with side shore low tide workable walls made for some really fun down the line rides and playful turns, floaters and off the tops. Then they headed to Missions for some really epic conditions with no else around. Just 5 surfers and heaps of clean waves.

Sunday   Heavy Trades were still blowing and limited surf options due to availability of surfing spots on Sundays and so the surf options were called off for rough ocean conditions and poor surf availability. The guests enjoyed the village church service, Sa’Moana beach, and cooling off in the infinity saltwater pool getting ready for the awesome Aussie BBQ for dinner.

     This just in from Resort Latitude Zero, Telo Island

We have been under going some changes to our website structure over the last few weeks and have been unable to post surf reports which is kind of ironic considering we have just had one of the best runs of swell and quality waves for this year.

Zero to very light winds, clear blue skys  and consistant 4-6 ft swell  has given the guys something to be stoked about day in, day out for the whole week. Some truly memorable sessions have gone down, not in the huge wave range but for consistant, clean, overhead waves, one of the best of the year so far for sure.
We will be looking at a drop in swell over the next few days that will probably really bottom out on Tuesday with more goodness predicted for mid and late week.

Surf travel, for all its energy and pace, is just like any other type of travel. That is to say that it has a social responsibility to the destination. I am back from my trip to Samoa and wanted to personally thank you for the allowance of extra baggage.

Please find attached a couple of pictures of Samoan locals being given kids clothes, footballs, and rugby shirts and jerseys that were only made possible by you giving me an excess baggage allowance for these items.  As you may be aware, on 30 September 2009 Samoa was hit by a tsunami which killed almost 200 people and displaced thousands.

Your kind gesture allowed me to give out kids clothes, rugby shirts and jerseys and about 25 footballs (as you would be aware rugby is their National sport, which all Samoans love).  The locals were all very excited and very grateful.

Monday 7^th of June to Sunday 13^th of June

Monday With strong trades and stormy conditions the crew headed to Pebbles to sample some head high peaks with a few fun rides. The Guillotine section was the best option with rain squalls and hard offshores.

Tuesday  They woke to lighter winds and a bit bigger swell so the call was to head to Wakas. The crew scored some overhead really fun waves with no one else out. Living up to its name by providing some wackable walls of fun for all.

Wednesday   The All Zone option was taken and they hit Salani Left in the early morning. A bit of morning sickness from the overnight winds and stormy conditions left the ocean bumpy and a bit disorganized so the crew shifted to Rusty’s which had organized the swell into some good fun walls with A frame steep takeoffs and running right hand walls all to themselves. They headed in to have lunch a bit of rest at a beautiful beach until heading off to Devil’s Island to greet the new swell. The wind had picked up during lunch and created great conditions with slow pulses of the new swell peaking with offshore winds. The bigger sets were well overhead and making some fun rides again all to themselves.

Thursday   The small crew of surfers worn out from the ALL Zone the day before took a day off even though the swell had arrived. Solid almost double over head sets out the front at Resorts. The rest of the crew decided to explore a bit of the island in a rental car and a trip to The capital Apia for some shopping and natural rock slide.

Friday   With a new swell hitting the day before and still in a good size range the crew hit Boulders and scored it by themselves. With some solid well overhead sets and long walls in pristine conditions. The crew of 6 guests stayed out for 3 hours and had heaps of waves.

Saturday   The swell was still around and in the early morning high tide they hit Coco’s just as the offshores kicked in from a local thunderstorm and scored good overhead barreling rights. Then, after the tide had switched, headed to Wakas for a board breaking experience of the overhead barreling left to finish a great day of surfing.

Sunday   The crew were still hyped about Coco’s and wanted another taste, they headed back although in a much smaller swell but still producing some really fun waves for around 2 hours then they headed again back to Wakas to end the morning on clean and head high bowling lefts.

Hi All,

        After hearing about epic conditions and glorious swells pounding the Southern Coasts of Australia I was super pumped when a family gig meant we would be heading down. But after being greeted by 11′c days and surfing in 14′c water I realised how much I love surfing……. in the tropics. So to anyone out there suiting up in the predawn glow, being greeted by chilly offshore winds and conditions better suited to ice fishing.  I can only commend you and admire the alacracity in which you continue to pursue the sport of surfing.  I understand the journey is important and the old chestnut “It doesn’t matter if its snowing or blowing I’m going” but cold is cold. The team here at World Surfaris hope that the below warm your toes and get you pumped to head off to some distant tropical wonderland in just your boardies or bikinis and surf to your hearts content as the only thing getting you out of the water is the exhaustion of paddling onto wave after wave and not numb fingers, purple cheeks and the ice cream headache which resulted because of your first duck dive.
