The season for the Maldives – Outer Atoll trips is almost upon us. Our good friend Kieth sent us through some pics of his trip to the Outer Atolls – he got the last trip in 2009 (still available for 2012 BTW). The Last Outer Atoll trip is a bit of cherry. Not only do you get the Outer Atoll trip but you leg it back on the northward journey to Male. This trips opens up a whole new playing field and all the breaks are yours to surf.

THE BEST OF MALDIVES SURFARI starting in Gaafu Dhaal atoll (Sth) and finishing in the Male atolls in the North you ‘ll spend approx 5-7 days surfing Gaafu Dhaal atoll before heading up to the remote Central atolls to surf breaks on the East and West sides.  Then travel to the Male atolls to end your trip surfing a couple of the more well known Northern breaks like Sultans, Cokes, Jails etc… This is an amazing trip at no extra cost to the standard Gaafu Dhaal trips.  A bit more travel involved (steaming at night) however the variety of uncrowded surf on offer will blow you away!

Hi All,

Ask anyone whose ventured forth on a surf trip and they’ll tell you that your surf guide can make or break your trip. It’s a point of pride for us and we’ll go through the full list in a future blog- a getting to know your surf guide blog.  For now though let us introduce the very awesome Nahu, Our Manta Guide in the Maldives.  For Nahu its all about maximizing your time and minimizing your crowd hassles.  Nahu joined us this year and teh feedback has been glowing read on for me……

Just a quick email to say we had a fantastic time in the Maldives. Everything went well and was well organised. The week on the Manta was great and the crew and surf guide Nahoo managed to get us to the best waves with the least crowds every day. The Manta is an awesome boat with plenty of room to spread out – Paul

Manta crew are simply the best. Nothing was too much, felt like a king staying on thier boat! Nahu did a great job getting us uncrowded waves every day on the boat. We often surfed with just the 5 of us in the water – Ryan Baltetsch

The curtain is closing on 2010 which means it’s the perfect time to look back and tip the hat to a great year.

I’d love to do a month by month account but time is pressing and let’s face it you came here for the pretty pictures.

So keeping it brief – Thank you, World Surfaris have an unbelievably good time sending clients around the world to get amped on surf and despite the occasional natural disaster (Sumatra Tsunami) or Boat washing ashore (Gaaviya Maldives) we wouldn’t have it any other way and we look forward to helping you with your enquiries for 2011.

All that’s left now is to grab a drink put your feet up and flick through the shots that came in throughout the year, let the mind wander and if you were one of the lucky buggers that skipped the pond and scored in 2010 we hope you’ll never forget it.

       This has come in from Caloundra Malibu club after an event that we had the privilege of sponsoring congrats to Classic Malibu on taking out first prize and runner ups Pacifique and Burleigh See you all next year……  

The surf and weather might have been ordinary in the lead up to this year’s event, even 7hrs before the start things weren’t looking too good with driving rain and strong winds.  Fortunately, it was the SW change passing over.  Dawn revealed clear skies, strong SW winds but with enough swell to delight the event organizers. 

For the first time the event was moved to Ann St Currimundi for the two days.  A great location for staging a competition with the viewing platform, boardwalk and grassy area ideal for spectators.  Even the food tent workers had an uninterrupted view of the surf action.

Eighteen teams nominated this year.  The Pacifique Surfriders from Bundaberg sent down three teams, joining teams representing the Noosa, Alex, Burleigh and host club Caloundra plus sponsored teams from Classic Malibu and Café by the Beach.

Winning this competition is not easy when you look at the teams.  Many Australian and Qld title winners and finalists appear on the team lists.

Congratulations to Classic Malibu for winning their first title.

Pacifique Surfriders 2 pushed them all the way, missing out by the smallest of margins.

Winners of the past two titles, Burleigh Longboard Club finished on top of the table after the three qualifying rounds but unfortunately couldn’t repeat their form in the final and finished in third place.

The Coulter family from Alex, finalist every year since the first Fun in the Sun in 2001, finished fourth.

What a year 2010 has been, the Indian Ocean delivered consistently throughout the season and the Pacific shot back to back swells onto south facing reefs as if in contest with its western oceanic counterpart. Surfers being stung by local frustrations were granted uncrowded relief as they landed on the shores of tropical paradises the world over and we were proud to put them there.

The following has come in from our long favourite budget Mentawais vessel the ever worthy ‘Santa Lusia’ and her skipper/guide Ryan. An important note on Mentawais 2011…… By now you may have heard of the Indo flagging issue, meaning that charter’s opearting in Indo waters now need to be Indo flagged those without the cloth sailing legally in the wind will have to pay hefty fees to operate. What does this mean for you?

- Basically it means that a lot of opeartors are bugging out, setting the sails and fading into the distance and the past, leaving Indo waters for less expensive seas.  So between now and when a horde of local fisherman catch on there’s going to be a lot less boats floating up and down the Mentawais. The crowds that arrived eager and willing from all corners of the globe to surf the hundreds of world class reefs that litter the region will be culled. Leaving even less crowds!  2011 and perhaps 2012 will be the years to get into the water for some truely epic sessions with no-one else around. Another Epic season on Santalucia has come to an end. As usual we scored twice the waves for half the price:0, All jokes aside The season was a banger! Lots of tubes to go around I am not sure what the other boats did but the majority of the time We scored Uncrowded Barrels! I have a good feeling the next season will be very similar. Subject: End of epic week in the Maldives

Hi Shaun,

We are nearing the end of this charter and what a hell one it has been for waves as the swell has hung all week. We have had a Southeast swell, so as you know it pushes into all the breaks including the breaks in the South Atolls, which we usually can head to for smaller waves. It has been the most solid swell I have had here, 6 to 8ft with bomb sets coming through cleaning everyone up. Mate people think the Maldives is mellow, it may be most of the time but you and I know that when there’s swell it’s game on. Talking to Brian and the other guides they reckon it has been the most consistent biggest swell they have seen.

I have not seen so much carnage on one trip as we have 3 broken boards, 5 with busted fins, 3 leggies snapped, dings, reef scrapes and aching bodies. The week started with 3 big days at Sultans and Jails, then another 2 big days at Kandooma. It was that big down they’re that the channel at Riptides was closing out!!

The last 2 days we have been at Cokes and Chickens where we have scored great 4 to 5ft waves and there have been us and 2 other boats.

Heard from Richard that it has been packed at Sultans so we have scored well.

Has been another great charter with a good bunch of guys, although very tired and sore Ha Ha. They were stoked with the boat, food and the service they received.

I will be on Handu next week and will leave early to be back on the boat next Monday.

Hello all!

My weekend started really nicely! winning my way through to the semi Finals of the Toyota Burleigh Classic with fun little 3 footers running down the rocky at Burleigh Point. With about 10 minutes remaining in my semi needing only a 6.33 i took off on what was the bomb of the heat, only to get fully faded by some absolute gumby who i ran over dinged my board and ended up on the rocks! Stoked! did not break for the rest of the heat…

Leaving the Beach straight away in a hurry to get to Suncorp Stadium to watch the all important Cronulla Sharks VS Brisbane Broncos. Sitting next to my brother with our brand new sharkies jerseys surrounded by drunken Broncos supporters we watch our team get smashed 44 to 16..Should of heard the criticism we copped!!! That’s alright the Sharkies will be back..

Some of the boys are stuck in Scotland bot being able to fly out because of all the Volcanic movement in iceland and its snowing..Have fun boys…

Off to the US of A for Trestles in about 10 days..stay tuned!

After recently returning  from the Maldives - Southern Atolls on a 12 day trip on the Handhu,  Andrew Johnston dropped us a line to fill us in on his trip. The report more or less sums up the ultimate surf trip and the pictures say what the words can’t.

SOUTHERN ATOLLS – MALDIVES

I have just returned from the Southern Atolls surf trip in the Maldives. I used to work the area years ago as a surf guide and have not been back for about 7 years choosing to travel to Indo as a cheaper option. I have been telling my friends for years how good the Southern Atolls are and we should get over there but we have taken until now to make it over (what were we thinking)…

After spending 12 days on the Handhu we all  agreed that we had just experienced the best surf trip any of us had ever been on (and we have been on a lot). The surf did not get below 3ft the whole time and it was consistently in the 4 – 8ft range and we were  able to surf every break in area on our 12 day trip. And for the myth “The Maldives is for longboarders” the Southern Atolls has a whole lot on offer. The only longboarder I saw was one paddling in as his long board was not long any more after being snapped in two on one of the smaller days.

 Not only did we surf all day but our nights and early mornings were spent fishing with alarm clocks being set at 3am for the early morning Tuna run… We often found ourselves asking the question “Are we on a surfing holiday or a fishing holiday” even the guy’s who have never fished before were pulling monsters out of the deep which would then be straight into the kitchen and on the table for lunch and dinner.

 The Handhu is by far the best boat working in the Southern Atolls being large and spacious that you never felt liked you were living in each other’s pockets. The crew, the boat and the food was far above anybody’s expectations and I only had 2 things to do each day which was put suncream on and wax my board and 2 decisions to make each day which was when to surf and what time to crack a beer.

 On a whole I think the Southern Atolls of the Maldives would have to be one of the most under rated surfing and fishing destinations around which is still hanging onto its untouched beauty.

After a small arguement with my wife I won the right to take my surf board down to Cronulla Sydney for my sisters wedding. The plan was whilst all hell breaks loose, as is usual pre wedding, I could escape for a quick surf.

The crowd factor down there left me flabbergasted, if you’re from down that way and reading this I doff my cap to you- Well done for staying true to your chosen sport admist the face of what seems like millions! Staring at the black dots crowded around breaks I wondered if perhaps staying back at the apartment, listening to pre wedding jitters and waiting for the inevitable emergence of the legendary bridezilla,  may have been more relaxing ? I wasn’t far wrong .

Wosre yet, no matter where you are reading this, you can probably relate. The crowd sucks, the tension pinballing from person to person, hateful stares, drop ins, snaking, your mates reminiscing about that one time you scored this spot big without the crowd leading to the eventual defeat causing you to paddle in.  

So the mind wonders…… Adventures, glassy waves, the type you see on the front cover of magazines, reef perfection, strange sunsets over distant lands, smiling locals sporting otherworldly clothes, the sense and thrill of the unknown and the time to enjoy it. I can’t imagine what you’re searching for but if any of the below photos inspire you then here might be a good place to start looking.
