The once infamous Surfarama festival has returned and World Surfaris were only to proud to sponsor the event!

Surfarama was a festival held in the late seventies through to the late eighties on the central coast of NSW.  World Surfaris were stoked to be able to sponsor the event!!!  The event held on the 15th and 16th of May was a huge success and saw some great surfing at Avoca point.  Check out the below report from event organizer and fellow sponsor Paul Green from Slimes Board Store!

” Avoca provided a great 6 to 8 foot swell out of the south with a WSW wind for more perfect conditions on the final day. With a trip to G-Land up for grabs provided by World Surfaris, Drew Courtney was on fire making the most of big open faces and some solid barrels. Surfarama showed the spectators that the Cental Coast has real talent with Shane Holmes blowing up all weekend and Brendan Hay pushing his board to its limits in the solid conditions.

XXL ride of the year finalists -David Scard on the far right.

At a lavish awards ceremony in LA, David Scard who heads the World Surfaris, Stealth Travel Club was awarded 2nd best ride in 2010 for his incredible Cloudbreak barrell. He was just pipped at the post by Danilo Couto of Brazil for his macking Jaws bomb ! Congratulations Scardy now get back to work

         Another entry has come in from our favorite Micronesian operator Allois from Pohnpei Surf Club.  Since the season kicked off in November Pohnpei has been handing out wave perfection like a well oiled machine.  The images below are from the last two weeks and look a tad gnarly for most, but with the wind staying down and the new swell said to be a comfortable 4ft, P-Pass is looking as welcoming as a cup of tea from an old friend.   The 2010/2011 season has truly stood out as one of the most remarkable seasons to date. The key words ‘consitent quality’ pretty much sums it up and with one month left in the season you don’t want to miss out. Click here and get on to it!!

The below is the latest from Allois summing up last weeks swell…….

This last swell really belonged to the goofy footers. What a week it was. Six days of six to twelve feet. Absolutely no winds for the duration of the swell. We even surfed a prefect left on the east side which is usually on shore during this time of the year.
Wade, Ried, Barney, Aren, Briga, Donald, James and Martin from Hawaii, Jason, Jeff, Jorge and Ray (The Bodyboard crew), Adrian, Nathan, Ray, Allan, Brad and Mal from the Gold Coast and Kadu, Formiga and his wife Carol from Brazil. Thank you all for coming. I hope you enjoyed your stay with us as much I as enjoyed having you guys around.
As today, most left and the swell held on for another two days. I surfed alone last evening. Looks like a few small swells on the way for the weekend and early next week.

Monday 4th to Sunday 10th of October

Monday   The week started with a strong E swell with hard NW winds so they headed on the All Zone to The Wild East to score some classic waves all by themselves. First hit was a right hander called Chewy’s at double overhead and caught it unreal! Offshore winds spitting barrels and racing walls amongst scenic beauty, then off to a long left just a short drive away called Boomers and it was again unreal, absolutely firing and no one but us our 4 guys! This is the All Zone experience!

Tuesday    With the stories of the previous day told to the guests who did not go that day the rest wanted to grab some for themselves to so they headed back out to Chewy’s for a little smaller size but same clean offshore conditions and the boys were stoked! The evening called for a late arvo surf at Resorts as a new south west swell showed signs.

Wednesday   With the new swell pounding the reef all night they awoke to find bombs breaking in front of the resort and our two new guests frothing to get out on a smaller right to start off with so they headed out to Special K to score 1-2 foot overhead clean bowls and great start to their holiday and for one his first wave since July and his first wave in Samoa was a barrel straight out the gate!   So stoked with the morning session the boys wanted more from Special K so they headed out again for the arvo and got it a little bigger and clean with amazing light at sunset.

Thursday   With a large south swell the crew headed to the Wild East to find some more playful right hand waves and they scored at White Tips with some slightly overhead sets running down the reef creating some fun waves out of the large swell. A rain squall came through at first and then cleaned it all up as the sun shone down, another beautiful surf session at Sa’Moana.

Friday   The swell had dropped a little but still had some large sets every so often so they went to Salani right and scored 2-3ft overhead waves with an occasional larger set rumbling through to keep heads on straight while having a ball on the fun barreling bowls.  Headed back to the resort for lunch and a bit of a rest, before going to Wakas for the late arvo session. Scored it for one and ½ hrs with no one else, with some 1 foot overhead sets coming in constant. Fun fun fun!

Saturday   With a smaller S swell Pebbles was the go for a change of pace and found it head high, no wind, no crowd, with a gaping makeable Guillotine section creating some great drops and a few spitting barrels for the boys to share.

Sunday   Surfed out front at Resort’s in the morning producing 30 meter long head high walling lefts straight out front of the restaurant making a nice end to a exciting and varied surfing week.

       Whilst Scardy was scoring 15ft + Cloudbreak on the weekend of the other weekend, New Cal was playing host to some of the finest surfers from Melanesia. The below comes courtesy of Seb our friend and operator from New Caledonia, which World Surfarfis had the extreme pleasure of visiting recently ( More later). The competition took place at Ouano break and we think you’ll agree it put on quite a show.

Monday 8^TH to Sunday 14^th March

 Monday   An epic swell pumping through was the first thing anyone saw this morning. They started the morning with a boat trip to the long walling lefts of Boulders. It was double overhead, glassy and pumping. After heading to shore for a picnic lunch, they made the call to head for the right handers of Special K. It was head and a half, hollow, grinding and again, our crew were the only ones in the water!

Tuesday   The barreling lefts of Pebbles had the crew slotted today. Another day of pristine conditions, with light offshores and a pumping swell! It was head and a half high glass and the crew had a ball.

Wednesday   Wakas was the call for an early morning trip and it paid off as they scored another day of great fun shoulder high waves, reeling, fun barrels in the light offshores!

Thursday   After days of pumping waves, the call for today was to visit the natural wonders of Samoa’s Ocean Trenches. An amazing day, as our guides lead the crew through the amazing underwater lava caves and through the coral gardens!

Friday   Keen to get in the water on boards again, the barreling right hand point of Jackpots was the call! Although onshore, the wave was still peeling, barreling and plenty of fun!

Saturday    The arrival of a new swell had the crew out for a great afternoon surf at Resorts! Head and a half, barreling left and right peaks with a perfect offshore meant lots of barrels and some great rippable waves!

Sunday   The dawn session at Wakas was the best option for today. Hours of rippable, barreling offshore shoulder high lefts were super fun! All the crew were stoked and amped for the big swell on the way!

If you want to escape your normal every day existence and experience a real surf adventure then Rubio Plantation Retreat is worth considering.

Your host Shane Clark (expat Hawaiian and one of the nicest guys you will meet, not too mention super keen surfer and adventurer) will pick you up from Kavieng in his Landcruiser Troop Carrier and you will drive approx. 3-4 hours to his little piece of paradise which is Rubio Island Retreat.  You will get a sore arm from waving to the friendly locals as you travel down the Boluminski Highway. 

Whilst at Rubio, you will be comfortable in your modest bungalow lodgings (with private facilities) and deck overlooking the bay and you will be well fed by the lovely local girls in the kitchen. 

On a daily basis you may surf out front at the left and right or hike over the hill to the next bay to surf a nice left (you can actually paddle from Rubio also to here).  Most days you will travel on a road trip to surf and explore this magnificent coastline.  Stopping the truck on the side of the ride and hiking 100m through a clearing in the vegetation to view the wave out front.  There are so many surf options from Rivermouths to Reef passes.  Shane knows most of them although he still hasn’t surfed them all yet.  You may get to name one however usually just name them after the nearest village.

No hardcore World-Class G-Land or Pipeline waves exist however the waves there are user friendly with good variety of lefts and rights and varying degrees of intensity from short sucky barrells to longer wally waves breaking in deep water.  One thing is 100% guaranteed is NO CROWDS !  Infact you WILL be the only surfers in the region.   With a maximum of 8 surfers at a time able to stay at Rubio and you can book the whole place out with 7 you are in for a surf adventure you will never forget.
