The morning of the 20^th was showing a slightly mixed up 3-4ft swell from the N/NW with light and variable winds. By the afternoon strong off shores had groomed the swell to ruler edge perfection as the swell veered N/NE peaking on the 21^st Nov at 6ft at 12 sec. The vibe in the water was really cool for the entire swell and the sets poured through and the crew shared shacks!

Hi All,

So we finally figured out the internet and have got some awesome pictures of P-Pass for you. Amy is doing a bang up job and as always Pohnpei Surf Club is living up to and exceeding  expectations. Summer is here folks and the North Swells have arrived with the long, balmy days.  Bad news for us back in Aus though onshore North Easters, Stingers, crowds and Kite surfers (not that there’s anything wrong with that).   If you’re on the East Coast you’re probably going stir crazy with the lack of quality swell and the forecast is looking depressing too. Hope the pics help, with more swell on the way for the Caroline Islands you can always book a trip and score. Other wise…. maybe …. kite surfing?

After two weeks of small waves and big fish, the first swell of the season hit Palikir Pass on Saturday the 5^th of November. It was a beauty. Allois and Scardy had both noticed a storm developing over Japan a week earlier and made the call that one of the Worlds most perfect waves was about to show her face. But when we motored out for a look late in the afternoon on the 4^th good waves were hard to imagine – the swell was tiny and mixed up and quite uninviting. After a quick snorkel it was back to Pohnpei Surf Club for Sashimi and another look at the swell charts. However, Allois assured us that we didn’t need to check any sites as he was quite sure it would be on in the morning, so the boats and boards were prepared for an early start.

Motoring down the river from PSC in the misty morning light is an experience in itself. Moments like these are a big part of the lure of surf travel. As travelling surfers, we often find ourselves in some of the most stunningly beautiful locations, admiring scenery that would justify the journey alone. But on this day we had another agenda – barrels! As we reached the pass it was clear that Allois’s swell had arrived – head high sets were breaking every ten minutes or so, though it was suffering from a mild case of morning sickness and wasn’t really barreling. We hit it anyway and soon realized that it was still super fun, in fact all the new arrivals seemed quite happy that they didn’t have to paddle straight out into heaving pits! Though within a few hours, that’s exactly what we had! It was an incredible transformation but there it was, right before us, absolute perfection. The day became an orgy of tube riding. Every wave that broke would barrel. If you made the drop and set your rail, you got barreled. Even when the wind briefly swung light onshore guys were getting eight second shacks.

As we motored back to PSC the sun slipped under the clouds giving us a crazy light show to perfectly end an epic day.

The next few days are a blur of barrels. Everyone surfed themselves to exhaustion spending a ridiculous amount of time in the tube. It was big, it was clean, it was perfect.

         Another entry has come in from our favorite Micronesian operator Allois from Pohnpei Surf Club.  Since the season kicked off in November Pohnpei has been handing out wave perfection like a well oiled machine.  The images below are from the last two weeks and look a tad gnarly for most, but with the wind staying down and the new swell said to be a comfortable 4ft, P-Pass is looking as welcoming as a cup of tea from an old friend.   The 2010/2011 season has truly stood out as one of the most remarkable seasons to date. The key words ‘consitent quality’ pretty much sums it up and with one month left in the season you don’t want to miss out. Click here and get on to it!!

The below is the latest from Allois summing up last weeks swell…….

This last swell really belonged to the goofy footers. What a week it was. Six days of six to twelve feet. Absolutely no winds for the duration of the swell. We even surfed a prefect left on the east side which is usually on shore during this time of the year.
Wade, Ried, Barney, Aren, Briga, Donald, James and Martin from Hawaii, Jason, Jeff, Jorge and Ray (The Bodyboard crew), Adrian, Nathan, Ray, Allan, Brad and Mal from the Gold Coast and Kadu, Formiga and his wife Carol from Brazil. Thank you all for coming. I hope you enjoyed your stay with us as much I as enjoyed having you guys around.
As today, most left and the swell held on for another two days. I surfed alone last evening. Looks like a few small swells on the way for the weekend and early next week.

    Scardy has been sending out Stealth Alerts thick and fast for swells hitting Pohnpei Surf Club. All those lucky enough to get onboard and score have been grinning from ear to ear. Surfed out and stoked beyond words, the place has been living up to its reputation. The worlds best right, P-Pass, has been commanding respect as with ligthouse and other close by breaks have had surfers amped for close to a month. There is talk of  more epic back to back swells coming so get your bags packed, keep an eye on your inbox and get readyto score.

Scary but exhilirating at the same time I’ve attached a few photos, we got a good solid 6ft swell and everything else there was great. Good food and accomodation, I actually got sick of eating “Sashimi” which i didnt think was possible.

Good vibes, good winds and epic waves for the crew. When I got to Palikir yesterday there was no one in the water. We have a full house of surfers and everyone of the was surfed out!
A new NE/ ENE swell on the way. COuld be epic east side. Will see in a few days.

The surf hasn’t been big but we have been finding waves to surf here and there almost everyday for the last month
I saw the waves on the reef this morning from an expected west/west north west (put it this way, straight west) but I new the tide was dropping to nothing and the swell was building so I waited until the afternoon when a friend on island could join me for a surf check.
I didn’t go to Palikir as usual because I knew some other waves would come alive today with the unusual direction and also because on a west Palikir becomes faster, breaks way more inside, is shorter, hollower and with a tendency to close out.
It still is a beautiful and barrel wave, but a lot more difficult to surf.
The main difference with a north swell is that the north comes from the out side and perfectly wraps around the pass. On a west it comes from the channel, 90 degrees to the left.
The evening started with a 30 minutes squall and strong off shores turning into 2 miles per hour off shore winds.
My better camera was broken so I shot these pictures with a crappy pocket camera with a 3 optical zoon from around 150 meters away.
The pictures don’t really tell the complete story. The left were 5 ft, very perfect and rippable. This was the first time I ever surfed this wave.
The rights were 6 ft + or double overhead, how ever you want to call it.
Swell should peak tonight or tomorrow and drop until Friday when a new south hits.
El Nino has been good to us.
Season is on!

In 30 minutes and a strong squall the winds went from strong off shores to almost no winds. 

This wave might look crappy compared to the ones I post of Palikir but it was prefect, glassy and had power. My camera was crap, that I know.

This wave is a right, but the left is a go as well.

 This low preassure was as big as the North Pacific Ocean. Not only did it send swell from a very unusual direction and the biggest swell to hit Micronesia in years. 

Mark Ryun came from Hawaii a few days before this swell. Him and his wife Layla are the nicest people. He has travelled the world and towed all over the North Shore. After checking Kelly and the boys kill it at 10ft Palikir Mark and his friends had it all to them self’s! Could not ask for a better trip.

This swell came with a lot of East so P-Pass did not get the full power of the swell.

It peaked at around 20 ft. The east and north east side of all islands from the Marshalls all the way to New Guinea got the full impact of the swell.

The swell simply washed over the low lying atolls destroying the crops and killing all trees as bread fruit, one of their main sources of food on these isolated islands.

All the soft coral up to 100 feet deep was also completely gone were ever the swell hit.

The line up went from the best surfers in the world at 10 ft to a few guests and the most perfect P-Pass at 6 feet for the next days.

Josh from Australia shared the line up at Nahlap with lots of future local rippers!

The Third Surf Day for Kids at Nahlap was a complete hit with the kids.
This is the third edition of this event and by far the biggest one thanks’ to everyone’s help.
John David from Nahlap provided free entrance fee to the island for all kids under 18 years of age.
The FSM National Olympic Committee paid for the water taxi to Nahlap for all kids under the age of 18 and cooked the biggest BBQ for the kids between surf sessions.
It was a wonderful weekend at Nahlap.
Me and friend/volunteers Jade and Ryan went down to Nahlap Saturday morning and spend the previous day getting ready, fishing and surfing the point at Nahlap.
That gave me a chance to study the reef and figure out were I would take the kids for a surf.
The 13 surfboards and 3 stand up paddle boards were not even close to enough to keep all the kids in the water at the same time. We had to have them start taking turns as around 50 kids showed up to give a try at the waves.
The Stand Up Paddle Boards provided by Robby Naish were an instant hit with the kids.
I will get some bigger pictures (and a better story) soon and up date this page.
We will probably have another surf day for kids at Palikir around December.
Again, thanks’ for all at Nahlap, FSMOC, FSM TELECOM, Steve Finnen, friends/volunteers/staff and the SDA surfer/teachers who showed up and really helped with the kids in the water.

The Pohnpei Surf Club has a nice quiver of surfboards for guests to use in case they break their favourite boards or are just flying by Pohnpei without any surfboards.
The board pictures here go from 6’2 to 7’2 for the light weight guys to the thicker and wider boards.

Our surfboard quiver changes from time to time as boards break in half and from us buying more boards from guests.

All these boards are almost new with no dings.

We also have another 20 boards with a little bit more use on them.
When we first started the camp we brought with us 200 bars of Quik Humps Sex Wax, probably the best wax for our kind of weather. We still have around 185 bars left, so if you don’t bring wax, no worries. We have plenty. Guests usually leave the ones they don’t use behind.
We also have lots of leashes in case you need an extra one.
We do have lots of FCS fins but if you use Speed Fins or Future bring an extra set just in case you break or loose a fin. We are running a little short on the Speed Fins and Futures.
Not pictured here are the Naish Stand Up Paddle Boards (9’6, 10;4, 10’6, 11;6).
Other equipment the Pohnpei Surf Club has for its guests are kites, kite boards, mask, fins, trolling gear, lures, the jet ski, the best fleet of boats and or pretty much anything you might need on your trip to Pohnpei..

No Boards, no problem!
