Nusa Island Retreat December 2008 Surf Report

Whilst November produced better fishing than waves, December was a turn around and Kavieng enjoyed cracker waves proving that Santa must be a surfer.

Early December saw an unusually large swell pound our coastline and whilst it reeked havoc amongst coastal communities and low lying outer atolls, being inundated with water from king high tides and solid swell, the surfing contingent made the most of what reefs were handling the size.

Remiss to call size, it would be fair to say the reefs that handled it were offering quality double & triple overhead wave faces. Rather than just the size, it was the volume of water or thickness of the swell at 17 second intervals – they had push and punch that made getting caught on the inside more that a little hairy & scary with 6 knots of sweep across the inside reef shallows – a gentle reminder of a cheese grater.

Most all breaks worked at some stage or another, dependant on the size of the swell. Nusa Lefts was the consistently clean option and hard to beat. Some were looing at back reefs for smaller wave options affording a little more ” fun value”

All in all, a great time had by all. Peroxide and elastoplast were a big hit.

Santa delivered another reasonable swell in the lead up to Christmas and generally speaking, there have been plenty of quality waves for all in December.

Next swell should be on our doorstep around 6th January. The cuts are finally starting to heal and we’re hoping 2009 kicks off as strongly as 2008 finished up. Other than that, fish are coming back on the bite and life is good in paradise.

Surf and fishing report – from Shaun @ NIR

Late pre season – had nice small crisp swells yielding fun workable waves to ease into season. Ral was reliable, a few good sessions on Nago Left – ( long walls and not a drop out of place). Pikinini also offered a few fast breaking sessions, and Nusa Left also delivered some trademark form – average size 2-4 foot, occasional 5 foot.

1st Nov Onwards –

An unproductive start to official season – simply a complete lack of swell and generally speaking, a little uninspiring with the only waves on offer being at Ral Island. Fortunately, the fishing was firing and to quote one of the boys and his infinite wisdom, there’s plenty of waves on the coast but the fishing doesn’t have a patch on here.

Their tally was good, more than a few sailfish, a swag of mackerel and many in the 22-25kg range, jobfish, range of trevally barracuda. The lads did the right thing and released secondary fish – to fight another day. Award to Jethro for falling out of the boat when trying to avoid the snappy head of a 25kg mackerel gaffed into the boat.

Last few days have offered clean fun waves at Ral – 2-4 foot – more promising than the last 10 days - apologies to Jimmy and the Lads – next time fellas.

Outlook – next few days looking much the same but with slight improvement so hopefully some of the other reefs will start working. Slight rise in swell & an improving period – direction is OK. No big systems to suggest anything epic in terms of solid groundswell but there will be small to medium waves with clean faces.

Today. another postcard day in paradise & nice 2-4 foot waves @ Ral – for a handful of surfers.
