Well it’s definitely summer. You can tell because we are getting regular and wonderful reports from the Northern facing breaks. I don’t know about you but I could do with some uncrowded reef perfection this summer.

It’s been another fun week of waves for our World Surfaris guests at Pohnpei Surf club! While it’s not been epic it has been a whole lot of fun. We have been enjoying a good run of mid-sized N-NW swell with moderate winds, clear skies, and no crowds  – the perfect way to start the New Year and burn off the excesses of Christmas! Today the swell has backed off slightly but the forecast is looking really good with a couple of substantial storms lining up to deliver back to back swells over the next week or so. Good times at PSC!!

The waves have been pumping almost non stop since December here at Pohnpei Surf Club !
There has been a break on the swells here and there and winds have been on the good side.
There has been a solid storm pattern in the western north pacific sometimes with 3 back to back 4 to 8 feet swells.
Even on the days when the wind was blowing a little bit stronger the angle was perfect and it did not affect the waves at all.
A few weeks ago Hippo, Dean Brady, Mike Parsons and Taylor Knox scored a perfect 8X8 swell at P-Pass.
Parsons was calling it the best surfing day of his life. A big call if you think how many different waves he has surfed from 2 to 80 feet in the last 30 years.
But it’s not all about the pros. Most visiting surfers are regular guys like you and me talking a break from summer (Australia) or winter (the north hemisphere).
If there is a positive side for the world economic crises it is the uncrowded conditions.
On the day these pictures were taken most waves went unridden.
Not only it has been pumping good surf 12 hours a day but the crew is surfed out leaving the line up completely empty at times!
Looks like a solid 6 to 8 swell is hitting on sunday and the storm pattern is still looking good for the following weeks.
Remember the Shane Dorian swell? That was March 5th and the biggest swell of last season hit on April 5th.
There is lot’s of time left to surf with us here at Pohnpei Surf Club this late season and hardly anyone around to share the sets with.

The swell has dropped off for the past two days which gave everybody an opportunity to check out some of Pohnpei’s attractions and activities. Basically for the past two days a lot of fishing has been happening. Not a great deal of catching but we had our moments. The local fishing tournament was on yesterday and Pohnpei Surf Club was the venue for the weigh in. I saw a variety of fish none more impressive than a 68 pound sailfish. 

I did a trek up to the top of the mountain overlooking Kolonia which from the summit gave spectacular panoramic views of Pohnpei. You can clearly see Main Pass and P-Pass. This mountain had a more strategic purpose in WWII as there are a couple of anti aircraft guns positioned on the top of the mountain. Some of the other guests enjoyed a visit to the mystic ancient ruins or a dip at one of the many waterfalls located in Pohnpei. Allios and the guys at Pohnpei Surf Camp do a great job at organising other activities for all guests when huey doesn’t come to the party.

 

The swell is due for an increase by the 30th which we are looking forward to!

The swell has started to brew in the Northern Pacific. The Pohnpei surf season is underway with Pohnpei Surf Club already reporting the first west swell which hit 30 September 2008. 

  

Pohnpei offers a great balance and variety of waves for intermediate and advanced surfers, not just pit hungry pros. Pohnpei Surf Club have capped the surfer numbers to twenty for your enjoyment! That means NO CROWDS and MORE WAVES.

One thing is for sure during early season. Phonpei gets the least winds and get to surf the East, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and possibly even the outer atolls. Not only do the conditions get really clean during early season, the winds also shift from trade winds (NE) to Southwest, bringing the east side alive. Early season swells can come from typhoons to the West, from North Pacific lows off Japan or trade winds swells from the East.

All kids had an introduction to surfboards on flat water learning how to paddle, sit on the surfboards, they got towed around on top of some fun water toys and when the tide got high enough to cover the reef all kids hit the surf!

Around 30 kids had no problem with the absence of the white sandy beach or dealing with the shallow and sharp reef on the inside where the waves were breaking.

All had fun and some potential champions were spotted.

The Pohnpei Surf Club would like to give thanks to all participants who came along, the volunteers who helped and Nahlap Island Resort for providing us with the location for the event.
