This is a prime time for great waves and the event has always been blessed with great conditions. World Surfaris usually have a bunch of pro surfers onboard our boats over this period and with the cancellation of the event we have now opened them up for sale. World Surfaris sponsored surf Blake Wilson is disapointed that the event has been cancelled as this event offerred quality high performance waves. World Surfaris instead will fly Blake to The Maldives to warm up, prior to the 5 star Sri Lankan Airlines pro in Sri Lanka in Mid June that replaces the Maldives event.

The winds have been perfect for all spots meaning the crowds have been spread out. Cokes has had some perfect barrels – it really hits the reef so nicely. The natural footers have been enjoying perfect “short but sweet” cylindrical tubes in crystal clear water while Chickens has been long and perfect – rippable walls with many barrel sections that leave ones legs shaking! The Boat has often been ferrying guys between the two waves mid session so we’ve really been mixing it up.

However, Sultans has been EPIC and EMPTY!! ..We have pulled up to a vacant line up so many times over this last week its really quite crazy! Absoloutly perfect waves and not a soul out! The same with Honkys. Most sessions this week we’ve had about ten surfers onboard and most days we’ve split between Sultans and Honkys so the math is pretty simple!! Sultans has been the ultimate fun park. Big perfect peaks, fun ramps, some long sections and some epic barrels…Surfing dosen’t get much more FUN than this!! Mirror it for Honkys! – Such a good left – a long wall – four or five big hits then line up the inside warp barrel!! Loving life!!

On island crowds are way down. Glassy and perfect 3-4ft!! Everyone here is so surfed out yet the waves continue!!

Again, as so often seems to be the case after a good run of waves its all a bit of a blur! one thing that’s for sure though, is that I’ve never been anywhere in the world and had so many different people tell me that they’ve just had the session of their lives!. The other line has been ” I had absolutely no idea the Maldives could get this good and this big!!” Admittedly we were long over due a good swell as the weeks prior had been very poor but then God made it up to us big time with the swell of the season!. The World Surfaris guests scored. We surfed Jails as good as it gets – perfect swell direction, light winds and perfect tides all combining to produce picture perfect conditions! - waves so flawless it was quite breathtaking … a typical ride would start way out on the corner of the closeout section where you could, if it was a double up, pull straight in to a beautiful almond shaped barrel, the swell was so perfect that you could then chose to either drag your arm and get deeper or duck out under the lip then fade, snap set up, drag arm stall and get slotted through the throwing second section … five second barrels were common !! then the inside was going square – big totally make-able perfect barrels ..Jails, on its day has to be one of the best multiple barrel section waves in the world! …(and I feel Imust add that even when its not perfect its one of the most fun rippable waves in the world!!)

After session after session getting mesmerised inside the perfection of Jails barrels

Sultans was dishing up a different challenge. Beautiful, perfect great peaks were standing up on the outside reef, surprisingly easy to catch even on a short board,it was all about big drops and big turns – whereas Jails was freight training, Sultans was allowing big carves and more top to bottom surfing before standing tall through the inside. Now I usually consider Cokes to be the most challenging wave in the area but some days at Sultans when the tide is going low the inside is one of the more technical barrels you’ll ever surf – Cokes is pretty much pull in and either get spat out or not – quite a straight forward barrel…whereas Sultans throws square, then pinches then flares open again then bends then flares open… – you can be in the barrel but behind the bend with no view of the exit only to have it flare open and spit you out….after surfing the predictable perfection of Jails a session at Sultans on a big day is so much fun..and as its such a wide open playing field it handles a crowd with ease…

….though the crazy thing with this swell was the number of times we (the World Surfaris guys) found ourselves surfing alone. It was kinda crazy how there could be charter boats around but hardly anyone out. I think we had four or five sessions with less than ten guys out. I surfed Jails as good as I’ve ever seen it with two others on three different days.. Sultans absolutely pumping with only three others and Cokes with no one but our boat.

I’ve not even mentioned the Lohis sessions!! - Bobby (Peter Mills) was pretty much running the show. To the delight of the crowds of onlookers the crazy Irish Australian would paddle out (or get the boys to drop him off by jet ski) and take off on anything!! I mean anything. He had some epic waves and some entertaining wipe-outs.. It was big and heavy with some huge barrels to be had…The Antonies – Tim, Mike and Tom also had a solid dig at it between Jails “barrel binging” sessions..!!

Now its smaller but still perfect. Life is pretty idyllic out here!! - this afternoon I surfed small Ninjas with one guest, we had Manta rays glide under us, a pod of Dolphins in the channel and a rainbow over Lohis…

We have just enjoyed a great run of waves! The last week has been pumping – everyday has been in the 3-5ft range with winds favoring the rights, esp. Jails and Sultans. Had some memorable sessions one in particular at jails stands out as the barrels were so perfect, a squall had just blown through and cleared the line up so we had it to ourselves, the wind was light and from the West, and the tide was a couple hours up from low. Everyone was getting long deep barrels! – even guys who had never had a barrel before were getting them! Such a good session!

Sultans has also had some incredible days with big A frame peaks out the back and super hollow inside.

… The wind has been kinda cross shore at Lohi’s but the key to a good session has been waiting for the rain and the glass off that always seems to follow! Surfer numbers on island are way down – right now only fifteen surfers on island so when Lohi’s turns on guys have been scoring!

Boat charter numbers are also down, at present probably half the number we were dealing with last year!

so crowds are much thinner at all breaks.

Gotta run for the arvo boat

Rich.

Winds were ever changing but generally it was fun conditions most days..

June: First week was not great surf-wise. unfortunately, that was when the ASL crew was there and they got a little skunked (though they did show how much fun even little onshore waves could be). Then the ‘QS started and the swell kicked in just in time – 4-6ft and perfect for 10 days.We scored. The pro’s were cool to surf with and most of them stayed at the comp site or just surfed Sultans. The wind was perfect for the rights – we surfed epic Cokes day after day by ourselves or just one other boat and everyone was kinda relieved when the swell dropped for a day or two and gave us a brief respite before another week of perfection.

July/August: Consistently bigger and thicker, the swells had more power though crowds were kinda heavy, however swells were so consistent …So many good days it’s a blur; guys were getting the waves of their lives. The bigger, better swells were always the least crowded…. some epic days at Lohi’s … Jails like warm water J Bay and big barrels up at Cokes…

So many Manta rays in the line up and the ever present Dolphins…

September/October: Magic – light or no wind; super consistent and towards the end, very light crowds. Dreamlike sessions with super cool guests. Light winds and S/SE swell enabling us to surf all the spots… Some amazing sessions at Chickens with just one other boat… my favorite months to be in the Maldives for sure…
