Surfing makes you a morning person this is because the best and cleanest waves generally break first thing. I’ve started to notice more and more people rushing to the waves at the crack of dawn hoping to beat the crowd and nail a great one.
Whilst out there waiting for the sets to roll in the mind wanders and certain facts come rushing to your attention. Facts like; how many people are surfing these days and why are they all here on my break? The surf is not that great I want to surf magazine front cover waves, and my favourite, wouldn’t it be great to get the hell outta here and into some great waves without the crowd?
I get regular updates from Sa’Moana and regular pics. In the scheme of things this place cooks, so next time you’re out in the waves waiting for the sets, staring gobsmacked at the crowd just think about getting the hell out of here - maybe to Sa’Moana!
Monday 11th to Sunday 17th January
Monday. High tide @ 4:30pm. Despite the glassy conditions, the crew were happy to hang out for the day and recover after some big days surfing and fishing last week, R&R was the call.
Tuesday. High tide @ 5pm. Another recovery day today with some good swell forecast to be on the way! Perfect sunny weather, relaxing on the deck and by the pool made for a great day!
Wednesday. High tide @ 5:50am. A big day on the boat was the plan for today! As the crew motored their way down the coast the pristine glassy conditions were a treat and the schools of Flying Fish made for a wicked sight! We ended up having a fun surf at waist high glassy Rusty’s as some of the crews partners enjoyed a snorkel and sun bake from the boat.
Thursday. High Tide @ 6:30am. A great morning dawned with a solid new north swell in the water! Conditions were glassy early with some solid sets. The guys enjoyed some fun head high waves at The Rivermouth before the onshore wind came up.
Friday. High Tide @ 7am. While some of the crew enjoyed glassy head high peaks at the rippable Rivermouth, others enjoyed the sucky ledgey right hand barrels of Waterfalls. With conditions staying sunny and glassy all day there were plenty of options and all the crew had a ball.
Saturday. High Tide @ 7:30am. Another trip across the island to Tiavea saw more glassy fun and rippable waves ridden at The Rivermouth. As always an uncrowded line up, jungle lined cliffs and tropical water made for an epic time!
Sunday. High Tide @ 8am. A boat trip in sheet glass conditions saw fun head high right peaks at Coconuts. Lots of barrels for surfers and body boarders and more than enough waves to go around! A light sea breeze saw us pull anchor and head to Pebbles where the crew got slotted in some super fun wedgey barrels! Everyone was stoked.
