ZANI’S WORLD…….
The mentawai islands is one of the most coveted surf destinations in the world… it is synonymous with a bunch of guys on a boat trip chasing waves, drinking bin tangs and basically forgetting what a hot shower feels like. Any surfer who has made the journey will tell you that a trip to the Mentawais is unforgettable but words like relaxing, restorative, peaceful & romantic are not often heard…. Enter: Togat Nusa Retreat.
This driftwood kingdom surf retreat is built on a private 12 hectare island in front of Scarecrow’s surf break by the amazing Ainsley & John E Ocean, formally of Kandui Resort.
Every inch of the island is designed and built to make you feel comfortable, including the hot showers in the beautiful bathrooms. Each bungalow is so unique, it is seriously a piece of art. Remains from dutch fishing vessels and Antique Japanese Buoys decorate the craftsman driftwood architecture and make for the ultimate zen zone.
Enter: the a.m. yoga class before surfing, the sunset pranayama breathwork session, and the evening candle gazing and restorative yoga sessions. It’s no wonder this last week Togat Nusa Retreat was filled with yogini women here to chase waves and slide into pigeon pose, staying limber and stretched for the next surf. One of the women on the island was there with her boyfriend and found that turning the driftwood bungalow into a love shack takes very little effort at all. It’s as though the island was created for surf, yoga & romance. From the empty beaches of perfect white sand surrounded by every shade of turquoise and aqua, to the delicious meals prepared by the Indonesian chef on the island, to the late afternoon surf sesh where the sunlight sits on the water like fire colored silk billowing in the wind.
Another one of the guests had just finished her yoga teacher training in Ubud and took turns with the island’s yoga instructor teaching classes and practicing what she learned. Everything is laid back at Togat Nusa… allowing the guests to immediately sink in and become a part of the family, and find themselves totally content in every moment.
One guest was a non-surfer but was in heaven just practicing yoga at least twice a day, lying on the private beach sun-tanning, and exploring the reef snorkeling… exactly the agenda a spouse or partner of a surfer might have if they were to accompany a surfing loved one to the Mentawais.
But as luck would have it, the majority of people on the island this week were women and the vibe was amazing. Goddess energy just oozed off the island as the girls sat on the beach each night at sunset watching the vibrant colors splashed across the sky drinking the newly invented “kalapa-cardi” – bacardi inside a coconut (kalapa in bahasa indonesia)…
Maybe this is a new wave of Mentawai adventures… the unforgettable Goddess trips to the driftwood kingdom on Pitojat Island…
Cheers WS
