The Kandui man can…

Kandui July 2012 so far (32)

Hi all,

So Kandui surf resort in the Mentawais has been sending through some you beaut pics lately. We thought it would be remiss of us if we didn’t share the love.

Enjoy WS:)

July 2nd surf report

We got a little pulse of swell yesterday and it was big enough for a few nuggets to be had at Kandui’s and Hideaways.  Conditions were good and, if you were patient enough, you could pick off a sweet one.  Beng Beng was also good and a few guys headed over there.  Our return guest, Bob, likes the big barrel but mistakenly got on the Beng Beng boat!  It was a rough evening for poor Bob seeing all the Kandui barrels during the slide show.  I’ll post a picture of him at Beng Beng and you will see that he still made the best out his situation.  I’ll also post a picture of our guest’s, Mark, fins out slash at Hideaways.  If I have to tell you where the rest of the pictures are from, you haven’t been paying enough attention to our websites over the years!  Looks like things will slow down for a couple of days, then there is a moderate swell that is due.

July 7th surf report

It’s another turnover day today with satisfied guests leaving and frothing guests arriving!  Our departing guests had a good little run of swell these last few days.  Rifles had some waves, although size wise it was pretty borderline with only a few legit waves coming through, and quite a few people trying to get them.  A Frames was about as good as it gets the other day, as well was Nipusi, although those are not the waves we come to Indo for.  We also got fun 4-Bobs, Karambat, Beng Beng, Hideaways…  It was pretty much a smorgasbord.  I could try to pick out a few nice shots from all those places, but I just can’t do it.  Bankvaults was the place to be and it’s hard to post shots of anywhere else when Bankvaults is doing it’s thing.  We did pretty good about avoiding the crowd and getting the best conditions there as well, even getting it a couple of hours by ourselves with good conditions, although we were kicking ourselves that the double overhead sick ones were always somehow getting by us and rolling through unridden!  We’ll get em’ next time.

As much fun as we have been having, it’s been definitely slow swell wise considering we are in July, and the forecast is looking for more of the same with only a couple of moderate swells on the horizon.  But the upside to that is that the Indian Ocean seems to just build up pressure during spells like this and then it seems to make up for lost time with a series of bombing swells.  If I were you, I would see if there is any space available in the upcoming trips and buy your tickets now!

July 8th surf report

Our new group jumped right into it with a good Bankvaults session.  Not huge, but still plenty of fun.  We should still have some waves tomorrow, then actually a handful of little swells before a possibly real swell toward the end of this trip.

July 9th surf report

Another day, another trip to Bankvaults!  The surf was a little smaller today, but still plenty of fun.  We also got a session in at Beng Beng and got some fun waves at Hideaways as well.  It’s been busy around here lately, but our guests got a couple of sessions by themselves today, at least for and hour or two, and this Hideaways session was one of them.  Kelly, Dorian, Rizal, Ross, and a bunch of other pros are in town, and by the time they got to Hideaways, our guests were content to watch and play the peanut gallery and soak in all the good surfing.  Those guys are amazing!  We’re hoping for a little pulse in swell height tomorrow.

July 10th surf report

We’ve been living on a steady diet of Bankvaults this last week and it’s been pretty good to us.  If it’s not broken, don’t fix it!  We were back there this morning and scored again.  Conditions were perfect and the sets were a little bigger than yesterday.  Some of our guests bypassed Bankvaults and surfed Nupussi.  Why not?  The waves were overhead, conditions were perfect, and it was empty!  The pros came out to Bankvaults about midday when the swell was peaking (how do they know???!!!).  Conditions were a notch below the morning perfection, but they were showing us all how the wave should be ridden.  Ross Willams got some nice barrels and Talor Knox threw down the hack from hell on a solid wave.  I’m sure you will see it all in a magazine or movie soon.  With all the attention at Bankvaults, one of our boats went around to Beng Beng and surfed it by themselves.  Sets were head high plus with good conditions and it was nice to beat the crowds again.  We’re looking at smaller surf tomorrow, but it still should be plenty fun.

July 11th

Another day, another trip to Bankvaults!  We are going to squeeze every barrel out of this swell that we can!  And there were a few to be found today, although it was definitely slowing down out there.  It was a beautiful day and I actually had to take some color OUT of the attached photo.  The original just looked fake!  We also surfed Nipusi, Beng Beng, and out in front of the resort.  We have some motivated surfers on the island right now so we are getting all this area has to offer up right now.  Looks like the swell should be on the decline tomorrow, but there might be some real swell on the horizon.
