Seems like Huey is in good spirits as all the groups have arrived to pumping waves out the front.

New group arrived yesterday, returning guests from WA showing the knowledge and getting strait into it at pumping Pasti, Lobang and Nagas on their first surf.

Even the ones that hadn’t been here before charged hard regardless of some being well over 50 ++.

We had two good swells last week for the last group, and waves haven’t been below head high for over 10 days, with predominantly light W to NW winds, with oil glass conditions from 6am till around 10 am, then the afternoon glass off. Between 10 am and 4 pm we been having light E to S wind, giving the goofyfooters a chance to surf some lefts at Bagas and even a few Rahasia sessions went down.

Tantras and Tanggu have dished up everyday fun also with the girls from last group clocking in serious water time on their new favorite wave in the world, Tantras!

But definitely the waves on our front yard have been the pick, with Pasti, Lobang and Nagas firing every single day.

Opening you eyes in the morning and seeing the surf pumping, AGAIN, from the comfort of your pillow, with 3 completely different waves doing their thing, without a drop of water out of place and nobody out, pretty hard to beat really!

The 2013 Maldives season is now in its third month and kicking on nicely. Legendary guides Richard and Amy Kotch have been taking notes and avidly snapping pics. You’ll have to forgive us for the late report. Here’s  Richard’s summary and report of May, 2013 from Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort.

Maldives Swell Report May

OK so the first week of May was as bad as it gets out here in the Maldives. We endured south winds and tiny swell, the only highlight being the massive squalls that would come through and rock the island providing a bit of an adrenaline rush for our frustrated guests. Come night fall there was some pretty serious partying going on and the all inclusive bars took a hammering. “This has been the best surf trip of my life”, reported one particularly raucous Aussie laughed, “and I’ve not even unpacked my boards yet”, as he ordered another round of drinks for his new mates! The wind dropped and the swell filled in on the 7^th but by then every surfer in the Maldives seemed to be in the area and aside from Lohis, the line-ups were hectic. A great many of the guys in the water were virtual beginners so it did get chaotic. I should take this opportunity to point out that while the waves here in the North Male region are known for being very user-friendly they are still breaking onto reef. That fact alone should deter novices from booking a surfing holiday out here, but when you also consider that you are going surfing in amongst other surfers and that your inexperience is, without doubt, going to pose a serious threat to the safety of others, you really should reconsider.  Before I get slammed by the ‘fair go brigade,’ let me ask if you’d go and hack your way around the Royal Melbourne golf course after a year of playing your local public course? Of course you wouldn’t. However, a even better analogy would be to ask if you would go and learn to drive at Bathurst while a race was in progress? You wouldn’t, because you know your inexperience would cause carnage and could end up seriously injuring or even killing someone. As surfers we need to learn, at a very early stage, to assess the conditions and decide if it’s suitable for our ability. If you’re unsure, a good starting point is to ask yourself if you can duck-dive or roll your board under a wave if you get caught inside. My wife Amy has been walking around with a massive bump on her head just above her eye for the last week after a total beginner threw his board sideways when a 2ft wave approached him. The board hit her with the full force of the wave behind it. She was very lucky it didn’t hit her in the eye. The next question is, can you take off and surf competently down the line in control of your board? If you cannot you really should be going to a beach break. Period.  The sight of a total beginner paddling a 9ft plastic popout onto a decent wave, taking the drop on his belly, terrifying the guys paddling out, then getting first to his knees and then his feet as his board runs up the reef would be hilarious if it weren’t so tragic.

After three or four days of crowd dodging and riding longboards at Ninjas, the swell picked up and the crowds vanished overnight. I mean totally vanished! The long rights at Jails were handling the slightly mixed up SE swell better than Cokes or Sultans and we arrived just in time to see a familiar looking, but hard to place, natural foot pull in to a long barrel and weave through multiple sections before getting clipped on the inside. It was Andy Schwartz, the Worlds hardest frothing surf guide from the charter boat Handufali, riding switch through a virtually empty lineup. Our guests didn’t hang about to watch his next wave and a bit of a frenzy ensued! To be honest it was far from perfect. The swell was still a bit raw and mixed up. It felt as if it needed more of a slab to focus it onto one place. Jails is such a long flat reef with a very gentle gradient that some sets were breaking at least fifty meters further out than others which made it very hard to shoot from the water and equally hard to surf. The secret was to commit to one section of the reef, find your markers and wait patiently for a wave to hit it just right. Amy Kotch sat and waited on the end section and while she only caught a handful of waves they were some of the biggest and best of the day…. Meanwhile Caity Griffin paddled deep, way up the reef and took off on anything that came her way, the bigger the better, pulling into some deep barrels and taking a couple floggings in the process! After a couple hours a massive squall ended the session but by then we were all pretty much done so it was back to the buffet to re-fuel. Over the next few days the swell straightened up and jails had some very memorable moments and our guests surfed themselves to exhaustion. The crowds stayed light and the wind, though strong, stayed out of the west, meaning that the rights were off-shore all day. Most sessions it was just us and the World Surfaris guests from the Handufali in the water so guests could really get their wave count up and start to feel confident in the water.

Over the next ten days there were waves of some sort every day, nothing epic but fun, mid sized ‘just another day in the Maldives’ playful 2-4ft waves, and the crowds stayed fairly light, even though the SW wind has meant that most sessions were at either Jails or Sultans.

Unfortunately it didn’t last, May has ended as it began with strong winds, hardly any swell and some very committed partying on the island. I guess if you must get skunked on a surf trip you may as well be on an island that has all-inclusive bars!

The one positive I take from a bad run like this, is that over the last six years I’ve noticed that after a particularly bad May, once the weather does clear up, it seems to clear for the rest of the season. It’s as if we are getting all the bad weather all in one hit and then we settle into more of a W/NW pattern with clearer skies.  Lets hope so!

Hi All,

The annual ‘Primitive Surf Postcode challenge’ went down in clean 2-3ft waves at Sunrise beach on the Sunshine coast on the weekend.  Nearly 100 competitors fought it out over several divisions.

The Blue ribbon, Open division was hotly contested and after 2 days the field of 40 opens was down to 4 for the final on Sunday afternoon.

It’s now official that Brisbane’s best surfer for 2013 is Robert Prosser!  Robert was officially ripping all weekend and found some good sections to smack in the final and just pipped previous winners, Nathan Cronan and Hugo Prasser.

Congratulations Robert you and a lucky buddy are off to Aganoa Beach Retreat in Samoa!

May 16th surf report

The last of our sting of south swells faded away today.  It was a good run and Rifles had solid waves for days.  But, surfing being the fickle beast that it is, we were plagued with winds that were not ideal and Rifles had to peel off the reef in choppy seas through most of the swell.  There were a couple of very short windows when there were fairly clean waves to be had, but you could probably count those waves on two hands.  I’ll post a picture of one of them, Laudinie on a sick one!  No worries though, we know where to go on those conditions and we found some good waves everyday and even surfed a wave for the first time that will definitely be on our radar from now on.  Looking at fading swell, but still fun surf, for the next few days.
