So Ocean Divine has been a bit quiet on the blog front lately, that’s because they’ve been dry docked getting everything ready to ensure the 2012 season is a success. Shaun Levings has recently returned from what can only be described as two weeks in tropical wave nirvana. His recent stint onboard Handhu Charters saw him and a handful of others scouring the Maldives in search of that elusive slice of wave happiness. This trip happens once a year as the charter returns from the Southern Atoll season and steams up through the central atolls into the Male region, it is for this reason that we call the return trips on both the Handhu and Handhu fahli ‘the cherry trips’. We’ve been sending surfers to the Maldives since the 90’s, we’ve been lucky enough to garner the respect of the locals. On this particular visit Shaun’s dropped of a few goodies to the locals at Tiger Stripes who have been kind enough to share their waves with World Surfaris patrons.

Shaun had this to say.

Whilst in the remote Southern Atolls, World Surfaris and Handhu presented the Tiger Stripe locals with U$300 cash to help them build club-house for their surfers on the point along with stacks of Wax, new Hats and a pile of Surf Mags. These surfers have a quiver of resurrected boards that they have repaired and rip it up at their homebreak Tiger Stripe lefts and  often endure a long paddle to surf a decent right on the other side of the channel.  They are always very courteous to visiting surfers and are stoked to share their little piece of paradise with those who show them a mutual respect.  Ash is only 28 yrs old but he’s the oldest surfer on their island.  World Surfaris first deployed boats to this atoll in the late 90’s and Ash still remembers some of our guides from the early days when he was just a grom.  World Surfaris are stoked to call these guys friends and look forward to seeing them next year and hanging out in their new surf shack and reading the mags.

So with the Indian Ocean approaching full swing its time to remind you all of why a surf trip should be somewhere in the top 5 of your priorities. Honestly we can’y substantiate that claim as we don’t know what your circumstances are, but a surf getaway maybe what you ‘need’ as well as just what you ‘want’.

Surfing is no longer the famed fringed sport it once was. It seems like only a few years ago surfing was enigmatic and had just started breaking free from the ‘taboo’ like stigma that had been attached to it along time prior. It was less of an emerging subculture and more of a ‘cool thing the kids were doing’. Surfing’s steady and exponential growth into the mainstream now has us at odds with our own sport, at least in populated areas. Like coal, water, housing, minerals or any number of resources its finite and we are running out.  The answer, I, have decided is similar to deep space exploration, just like so many sci-fi movies have suggested in the search for more – go elsewhere. Okay so maybe I’m taking it a bit far… but perhaps, just maybe, you should reward your self with a bit of surf exploration in the search for quality waves and more of them.

Chase the sunset, share the journey with a only a few mates – not crowds of strangers. Find that magical afternoon session, when the surface glasses off, the warm water surges and forms, paddle in and pull in down the line to the hooting calls of your mates. No one paddling into the wave on the outside waiting for you to fall,  no crowds to weave around. Just another afternoon surf on your much needed trip.

Believe it or not I actually fussed a little over the the title of this blog. I wanted to say Aura is like cake: Because its tasty, or Aura is like a cold drink on hot day: because its refreshing. The reality is that any simile is going to fall short of the mark and saying something like; Aura is like a picture perfect surf retreat in North Sumatra surrounded by pumping  waves with nobody on them , doesn’t fit. So I settled for the obvious. Besides we all know we came here for the pictures. Andy has sent through some sick shots

Aura Surf resort sent these gems through yesterday and we’ve been drooling over them for a while now. I don’t know about you but I managed to get wet over the weekend and it seems that so did everyone else on living in coastal Australia. Despite the crowded conditions I was happy with my modest score of waves, that is until Aura surf resort shamelessly sent these images through with the accompanying text below.

We’ve been watching it for days, and it certainly arrived.  There was a fair amount of water moving this morning and the swell just increased all day long.  By early afternoon, there were 12 waves sets stacked to the horizon and big waves breaking in every direction in front of the resort.  This swell was bigger and more consistent than the one last week.  We were a little bummed to see 5 boats pull up last night and more than a little bummed to see Rifles crowded in the early morning, but we sent one boat to dog reef where they scored some good waves with no one else out, and we had to pinch ourselves this afternoon when Rifles was pumping and clean with only a handful of people out!  We’re not too bummed anymore.  The reports are saying that the swell will increase into tomorrow, but this afternoon had all the feel of a peaking swell so I would expect a little smaller surf in the morning.  I think a lot of people around here will have no problem with that!

Justin,

We have just got back from our surf trip in the southern atolls of the Maldives on the Handhu Fahli and thought I should send you a few photos from the trip. Our boat the Handhu Fahli was a great way to surf and experience this beautiful part of the world. We had a great trip with good surf, good food and good company. The boat crew and surf guide “Stumpy” treated us very well and had us at a surf break each morning at dawn. We surfed every day of the trip with usually 2 to 3 surfs a day. We were unable to surf every break in the area due to wind conditions however we did surf Tiger Stripes, 5 Islands, Castaways and Beacons with 5 Islands possibly being the pick.

Thanks for your help in organising the trip for us. It all went down without any problems at all.
