The season for the Maldives – Outer Atoll trips is almost upon us. World Surfaris only represent two boats in the region as we aren’t keen on crowds; the Handhu and the Handhu Fahli have been getting surfers stoked in this region for a long time now and we were the first surf tour company to get surfers here – we know the region.  Handhu outer atoll trips are full but Handhu Fahli is more or less open – but won’t be for much longer.  If you want Indo style waves without the crowds, expert crew and the best guide in the region ‘Stumpy’ you can’t go wrong. – click here for more info.

Our good friend Kieth sent us through some pics of his trip to the Outer Atolls – he got the last trip in 2009 (still available for 2012 BTW). The Last Outer Atoll trip is a bit of cherry. Not only do you get the Outer Atoll trip but you leg it back on the northward journey to Male. This trips opens up a whole new playing field and all the breaks are yours to surf.

THE BEST OF MALDIVES SURFARI starting in Gaafu Dhaal atoll (Sth) and finishing in the Male atolls in the North you ‘ll spend approx 5-7 days surfing Gaafu Dhaal atoll before heading up to the remote Central atolls to surf breaks on the East and West sides.  Then travel to the Male atolls to end your trip surfing a couple of the more well known Northern breaks like Sultans, Cokes, Jails etc… This is an amazing trip at no extra cost to the standard Gaafu Dhaal trips.  A bit more travel involved (steaming at night) however the variety of uncrowded surf on offer will blow you away!

Needless to say we are mighty proud of our guides and the feedback we get is awesome. So we thought we’d introduce you to them you over the next few blogs – With Summer season in swing the Maldivian Outer Atoll trips are fast approaching and they’re filling fast so I guess it’s worth starting here… with the legendary  Stumpy’ Wallace of the Handhu Fahli.

Who is Stumpy and what does he do? : Stumpy has been surf guiding the Maldives for close to a decade now. As one of a few select crew to pioneer the Outer Atolls he’s privy to all the secrets and knows the moods of the area. His forecasts are spot on and can call which spot will be firing and when with an almost supernatural ability. The outer Atoll is a good stomping ground for surf but you really have to know what’s going on.  A lot of operators  over there now are just playing follow the leader when it comes to getting you swell. On Handhu-Fahli however don’t be surprised if the crew are hauling anchor in your sleep and sneaking quietly to uncrowded destinations leaving the rest behind. Stumpy and the crew go that extra mile for you so nothings a hassle and he’s a good character too if you do the trip you’ll probably end up great mates for life. Stumpy’s advice is always priceless too.  He consults with you and the group to get an understanding of what type of breaks you want to surf and any other  info he needs to make an educated decision on where you should surf . Then before jumping overboard into an unknown reef pass, you’ll get a run down on the wave.  From best take off point (what landmark to line up with), how the wave behaves, when to get off and how to get back out with minimum hassle.

So reports are still coming in from the Indian Ocean and it looks good – Damn Good! The whole 2011 season has been a corker as far as consistency and size has been concerned.  2012 is looking like another La-Nina year  (at least that’s what the Weather Bureau is saying). A lot of people have chalked up the surf and consistency throughout both Pacific and Indian Ocean to this atmospheric phenomenon so by all accounts its looking like 2012 is going to be another cracker.

But lets just get one thing down and clear! It’s the Indian Ocean, there is going to be surf no matter what, that massive wet gap between Australia and Africa tends produce swell regardless even on its worst day its still better than a good day at the local (definitely our local ).

2011 has kicked off, already reports from the outer atoll trips onboard the Handhu and Handhu Fahli have come in, and they are glowing reports. We are predicting that the 2011 season will be another cracker.

All the pics below are from the Maldives and were taken last year. We’ll be blogging about the Indian Ocean products in upcoming entries with a bit of an in depth look at each one, the breaks you can expect to surf and other tid bits of info to either get you excited for your trip or excited to book your trip. The first Handhu Outer Atolls trip has begun and with it we launch the 2011 Indian Ocean season. Handhu has seen some face lifts since 2010 as some of the feedback we got indicated that the boat needed some love – you spoke, we listened and Now Handhu is pretty as a picture and should surpass your expectations. The first 14 day trip began on the 18th Feb after looking at the charts they should see some solid looking swell coming their way Mid week increasing by Sunday and hanging around for most of next week. I know where I would rather be ……

Below are some of the pics showing off the updates and comments from Handhu CEO Ibrahim Shaheen - 2011 is shaping up to be a hell of a season.

Handhu has sailed to Addu tonight at 2230hrs from Male’ to start the season. I have attached with pictures major works done on the boat. I hope the repeaters will see a complete change this time.

Much credit goes to Mr. Fazeen, captain Soba and his crews for the hard and continuous work done to complete the boat on time.

I plan to do some minor regular maintenance on the boat, so we can maintain the boat in good condition throughout the season.

Deck Flooring and support frame renewed in 3 rooms
Toilets – all the cracked tiles replaced, 2 toilets- floor finished with non skid fiberglass tile like sheets
New mooring ropes, anchors supplied
Crew cabin – deck, cupboards, toilet totally renewed and renovated
Doors –new locks supplied and half of them replaced and the remaining will also be done in a day or two.
AC drains leaking to rooms – all fixed
New chairs and plastic table supplied
New stock of light bulbs supplied for replacement
Enough glass, plates, cutleries etc for kitchen and dining supplied
Towels, pillows, pillow cases – new stock supplied
AC’s serviced and tested in all the rooms
New battery sets for main engine and generators supplied

Subject: End of epic week in the Maldives

Hi Shaun,

We are nearing the end of this charter and what a hell one it has been for waves as the swell has hung all week. We have had a Southeast swell, so as you know it pushes into all the breaks including the breaks in the South Atolls, which we usually can head to for smaller waves. It has been the most solid swell I have had here, 6 to 8ft with bomb sets coming through cleaning everyone up. Mate people think the Maldives is mellow, it may be most of the time but you and I know that when there’s swell it’s game on. Talking to Brian and the other guides they reckon it has been the most consistent biggest swell they have seen.

I have not seen so much carnage on one trip as we have 3 broken boards, 5 with busted fins, 3 leggies snapped, dings, reef scrapes and aching bodies. The week started with 3 big days at Sultans and Jails, then another 2 big days at Kandooma. It was that big down they’re that the channel at Riptides was closing out!!

The last 2 days we have been at Cokes and Chickens where we have scored great 4 to 5ft waves and there have been us and 2 other boats.

Heard from Richard that it has been packed at Sultans so we have scored well.

Has been another great charter with a good bunch of guys, although very tired and sore Ha Ha. They were stoked with the boat, food and the service they received.

I will be on Handu next week and will leave early to be back on the boat next Monday.

        After hearing about epic conditions and glorious swells pounding the Southern Coasts of Australia I was super pumped when a family gig meant we would be heading down. But after being greeted by 11′c days and surfing in 14′c water I realised how much I love surfing……. in the tropics. So to anyone out there suiting up in the predawn glow, being greeted by chilly offshore winds and conditions better suited to ice fishing.  I can only commend you and admire the alacracity in which you continue to pursue the sport of surfing.  I understand the journey is important and the old chestnut “It doesn’t matter if its snowing or blowing I’m going” but cold is cold. The team here at World Surfaris hope that the below warm your toes and get you pumped to head off to some distant tropical wonderland in just your boardies or bikinis and surf to your hearts content as the only thing getting you out of the water is the exhaustion of paddling onto wave after wave and not numb fingers, purple cheeks and the ice cream headache which resulted because of your first duck dive.

The Maldives Outer Atolls yielded some great conditions for a group onboard the Handhu and well…. we thought it would be remiss of us not to share it.  Especially now as Winter is  sinking her teeth into the usually warm pacific ocean chilling the water and leaving us shivering in our wetties.
