Hi All,

So reports are still coming in from the Indian Ocean and it looks good – Damn Good! The whole 2011 season has been a corker as far as consistency and size has been concerned.  2012 is looking like another La-Nina year  (at least that’s what the Weather Bureau is saying). A lot of people have chalked up the surf and consistency throughout both Pacific and Indian Ocean to this atmospheric phenomenon so by all accounts its looking like 2012 is going to be another cracker.

But lets just get one thing down and clear! It’s the Indian Ocean, there is going to be surf no matter what, that massive wet gap between Australia and Africa tends produce swell regardless even on its worst day its still better than a good day at the local (definitely our local ).

Gav Clark our Ocean Dancer surf guide and super medic is on site at Teahupoo for the Billabong Tahiti Pro. Yesterday’s lay day due to the massive swell drew the tow boys out for some of the most death defying surfing ever witnessed. Gav was able to sit in the channel and watch it from the relative ‘safety’ of deeper water. His report as follows with the pics is pretty amazing.

Hi All

Well the last 2 days have been the most unbelievable days of surfing I have ever seen and I hope you all have been able to witness it on the net.

It started yesterday as finally the predicted swell started to arrive with 8ft plus waves hitting the reef. Due to the wind from the last few days it was far from perfect Chopes but still had some awesome barrels and the level of surfing was awesome.

To day was a whole new kettle of fish as we woke this morning to find a further huge swell had arrived. A lay day was called due to the size and just as well we had evacuated all of our equipment from our medical hut the night before because as the tide came in waves were coming under the judging tower and then surging up over the point and through our hut. Throughout the morning the swell built as had been predicted, the only people who could handle these conditions would be Tow Surfers.

Over the last few days the top tow surfers had been arriving from all over the world in anticipation of this swell and they were not to be disappointed. What we witnessed today was the most unbelievable day of surfing I have ever seen. Due to it being called a lay day and due to French law we are unable to treat people in a official manner, not that did not end up doing that anyway, so seeing that we had the day off Shorty and I decided midmorning to go out and watch the tow surfing. We had been watching it earlier from our house and it looked big but due to the distance was hard to see just how big it was. We scored a lift out from one of the Water Patrol guys and what we saw was mind blowing as we found our selves out amongst the biggest waves I have ever seen.

We spent the best part of 3 hours sitting on our boards watching guys tow into waves ranging from 15 to 25ft plus monster tubes. The scene was unbelievable as the lineup was crowded with jet ski’s, guys on boards and heaps of boats all watching the show of a life time. You just can not describe the feeling of sitting there no more than 10 mtrs away looking into these monster tubes and watching guys get the barrels of their lives and in some cases the hidings  of their lives. This was life and death stuff as we are talking about a 25ft waves breaking in 6ft of water over a razor sharp reef. Almost every person that got nailed, hit the reef and took skin off. The worst of the day was when one of the girls who towed into a smaller wave, flicked off only to be confronted by a huge set behind and it and then two following it which then flogged her to the point of almost drowning. Her only saving grace was that Poto (The best Water Patrolman in Tahiti) was out there and he raced in on his jet ski and grabbed her out of the impact zone. Shorty and I checked her out and found her bleeding from the ear and had swallowed some water so she was jet ski’d back to land and sent to hospital. She joined Dean Morrison there who had a suspected broken ankle and a Brazilian surfer with a serious knee injury from earlier encounters with the reef.

On a lighter note and just to describe the power of these waves, Bruce Irons who just happened to get two of the biggest barrels today, one which we reckon some where between 25 to 30ft got nailed while coming out of his second one and had his boardshorts torn right off and was then was picked up by the jet ski and driven right through the middle of the crowd in the lineup with only his Buoyancy Jacket on much to the delight of the cheering crowd.

As we were about to paddle in, George the guy who takes us out surfing in his boat asked us to jump onboard. He a bunch of Aussie photographers on board so for the rest of the afternoon Shorty and I had the best seat in the house as we were in the number one spot and over the next 3 hours we witnessed the biggest waves and the best barrel riding to be seen. George, the Photographers and even the Water Patrol guys said this was equal or if not bigger and the best waves than anything they had ever seen before.

Shorty and I finally got back to shore as the sun set, cracked a cold beer or 3 and talked about the most amazing day of surfing we had witnessed and as for my Bucket List, I have now crossed off seeing Chopes in all her glory.

The swell is supposed to drop tomorrow so the comp should be back on again and while it will be probably be in awesome waves I sure it will just be just that bit insignificant after todays events.

Shorty has just arrived with a fresh cold beer so time to catch you later.

The awesome crew from Ocean Dancer sent this through a little while ago. We like the Ocean Dancer not only because it embodies  everything you’d  imagine a luxury boat charter to the Maldives to be but it doesn’t sacrifice good ole charm and friendliness. The word luxury conjures up a slight pretense of cold, clinical fluorescence as if warmth and friendliness should be left at the doorway and servitude and detached respect should replace them. Not so on the The Ocean Dancer, no way. It’s like a warm hug their philosophy of “Come as a guest leave as a friend” rings true when on board. Just a quick email to say we had a fantastic time in the Maldives. Everything went well and was well organised. The week on the Manta was great and the crew and surf guide Nahoo managed to get us to the best waves with the least crowds every day. The Manta is an awesome boat with plenty of room to spread out – Paul

Manta crew are simply the best. Nothing was too much, felt like a king staying on thier boat! Nahu did a great job getting us uncrowded waves every day on the boat. We often surfed with just the 5 of us in the water – Ryan Baltetsch

All the food was great nice to try foods from a different culture…… Nahu had the best knowledge of all of the surf spots. I have never met anyone who could work out the best spots so well. – Ash Fuller

Every time we wanted to get in or out of the water there was always a boat ready straight away. also whenever we were getting out of the water they were wiling to grab out boards and put them away. meal times and general relaxing times on the boat they were extremely efficient and happy to help- Ash Fuller

You may notice a few more breathing technique classes happening which will really help out during a hold down. Ocean Dancers approach to the surf charter is really refreshing. You could easily take a non-surfing partner with you and get a guilt free surf trip of a lifetime whilst they take in the luxury.

Day 1: Guests onboard last night. Departed early for north to Sultans with good swell lines following us. Arrived to find clean 4ft waves fanned by offshore winds. Guests surfed great waves all day with the arvo session producing some bigger sets. session. A great first day of surfing with the guests surfed out

Remark:All-round a great first day with fun waves with guests surfed out and stoked. Swell forecast to hold during the week.

Day 2: Offshore winds during morning with a strong offshore rain squall coming through. Guests surfed clean 4ft Jails by them selves. Mid morning guests went snorkeling and diving. Mid afternoon saw Jails pumping as the swell increased with the incoming tide. Guests surf 5ft perfect Jails till dark and then finished a great day with cold beers and an awesome dinner on one of the local resorts.

Remark:Weather, changing through out the day ending up with light offshore. Another great day of waves with guests surfed out.

Day 3: Another early morning surf at Jails with only our guests out. Swell dropped slightly so we headed south to Guraidoo Island for a couple of days. Arrived to find Riptides 2to 3ft and clean. Guests spent the afternoon surfing, fishing and diving. Swell was looking good for the next day so another great meal was had, washed down with a few cold beers and the guests retired early ready for another big day tomorrow.

Remark: Another day of changing weather. Guests enjoyed the cruise down the coast. A good day of fun waves and diving on pristine reefs.

Day 4: Tide low in the morning so guests enjoyed a sleep in. Mid morning saw the tide push a nice 4ft swell in. Most of the guests took the day off surfing for snorkeling and diving and then in the afternoon went on Ocean Dancer to a nearby island resort. The rest of the gusts surf great fun waves at Riptides throughout the day by them selves. Another big day finished with cold beers while watching the sun set over the ocean.

Remark: A day of great weather and fun clean waves. Guests surfed, snorkeled and dived out, finished off with another excellent meal.

Day5: Headed back north early arriving at Sultans only to find the wind has swung cross shore and making all the breaks unrideable. Guests happy with a lay day following 4 days of great waves. The day was spent diving, snorkeling and  with David (owner of Ocean Dancer) putting everyone through a Free Diving course.

Remark: A lay day had from surfing but a great experience had by the guests learning to Free Dive

Day 6: Guests woke to unseasonal strong onshore winds affecting all breaks. Half the guests went fishing with a local fisherman and caught 6 huge GT’s while the rest of the guests surfed small cross shore Cokes. Afternoon. Last night onboard was spent celebrating a guests birthday with as usual a great meal

Remark: A day of onshore winds and great fishing.

Day 7: Last day on board and winds were still strong onshore again affecting all breaks. Morning spent snorkeling, followed by lunch and then returning to Male to drop of the guests at airport.

Remark: All-round a great week with guests stoked with waves, diving and their experience on board Ocean Dancer

David Mesnard is teaching breath holding techniques to guests onboard the Ocean Dancer. The classes are proving to be very inspiring and for any surfer that has struggled with a hold down the lessons are extremely useful.

On board Ocean Dancer this week the guests experienced their first free diving course in between surf sessions. Owner David Mesnard and his wife Gaelle are now sharing their expert knowledge in free diving; teaching techniques in attitude, breathing and mind control that will help you build self confidence and mental strength in and out of the water. The session is simple, yet powerful, and anyone on board can do it and achieve immediate results. “I was always surprised at how many good surfers come on board and how little they could hold their breath underwater. So I decided to share my experience on free diving to help them feel more confident in the surf and in particular when they get held down by waves. People can triple the time spent holding their breath under water after their first session!”

Recently in Australia, David shared his passion for “free diving” as a Motivational Speaker for the Fitzpatrick Group on the Gold Coast and the Hunter Valley. Results were outstanding and

people continue to build their self confidence and mental strength for any water sport and life situations.

“This is very cool! I went from 26 seconds on my first attempt, to 1 minute and 37 seconds after one lesson. It was an unexpected highlight for my trip, and the techniques will definitely help me in big waves and other life stresses. Thanks Heaps Guys!!”

The power couple had a shin dig with the World Surfaris crew and a few past guests.
