So is 2012 your year? The silly season zipped by at break neck speed and its almost impossible to not feel just a little bit cheated by it all.  Holidays are that glorious light at the end of the tunnel. Without that pin prick of light approaching in the distance it all becomes that little bit harder. We need a holiday to look forward too the more promising that holiday the bigger and brighter that light the more bearable the mundane. With Me? Good

Bearing that in mind – A small part of my day is given to looking at our website (obviously) looking over the site its hard not tick off destinations and create a bucket list. Up the top on anyone’s list I think would be the Maldives. After all its the Maldives, we’ve all seen the pics we’ve all said ‘One day’.

I heard a surfer call it the Smalldives, which suits me fine.  If its triple over head and late take offs into screaming pits you’ll find me under the covers or faking a headache/sore ankle/ brucellosis (which only affects gestating sheep).

Maldives with its clear waters, fun wakable waves and friendly locals suits me fine… It’d have to be a boat of course I’m going with my mates, sorry honey you’re no that keen of a surfer, we live in Australia so there’s plenty of opportunities to get a tan at home. I’d I want to see a lot of it. So the Male atolls, despite several world renown breaks and numerous options and a very tempting Ocean Divine, this small slice of paradise just isn’t going to cut it. It’s my dream trip so I want to see a lot of the Maldives let’s go Central and Male Atolls, that just leaves the Handhu. Yes, that’ll do nicely 12nights of surfing in paradise with my mates and great swell. Food and transfers all that Jazz taken care off. That would be a great light at the end of the tunnel.

Obviously all this rambling has a point… This trip is going at a steal. Yes its the sales pitch but its a bloody good one and its cheap like the budgie…

Hi All,

Justin one of our consultants has recently returned from a PNG Christmas. He came back with a few good yarns and a tonne of images. Staying at Nusa Island Retreat and Rubio he scored some great waves.

Captain Andrew Rigby (Captain Undies) of the PNG Explorer was also able to catch up and he had great dinner onboard with all the crew including their new chef (also Andy’s sister and a very skilled chef) Justin puts it down as one of the highlights of the trip.

PS- The PNG Explorer has some availability left for 2012 and looking ahead into 2013 it’s getting full. This is one trip that should be on your bucket list a real ‘must do’.

Christmas update for 11/12 season by Captain Underpants

Just about to kick off the sixth trip for the 11/12 season bonanza of uncrowded perfection in a remote part of the world thats actually really easy to access, weird isn’t it! The Legendary PNG Explorer and her crew have been roving around the PNG outer islands giving the term “taking the piss” a new meaning. Pumping empty waves, more yellow fin tuna than one can poke a stick at, awesome food and of coarse the coldest beer in PNG.

We got really lucky for trip five this season when Danni Gitsham an Australian Doctors International volunteer joined us. Danni has been working with ADI doing clinics around New Ireland Province to treat people who cannot access proper medical attention. In Particular Danni ran a clinic at Ungalik Island where she treated 54 people diagnosing three cases of diabetes, saved one lady’s life by treating a severe abdominal infection, diagnosed and supplied the correct antibiotics for all kinds of things. A truly amazing person.

Another point worth noting is just when you think every wave has been discovered another pops up! Can you believe this! Check out the images below. PNG Explorer and her crew has found that many waves in PNG now were running out of names. If anyone has any suggestions please send them in!

Well its back to the grind. Christmas and New Years slid past like greased lightening and he we are again the New Year brought in the old ushered out. We hope that your Christmas and New Years was safe, happy and full. Getting back into it now and to bring in the New Year with 2012’s first post we have some shots from Vanimo. There’s a tonne of stuff sitting in the inbox that we’ll post in future blogs so stay posted.

The season for the Maldives – Outer Atoll trips is almost upon us. Our good friend Kieth sent us through some pics of his trip to the Outer Atolls – he got the last trip in 2009 (still available for 2012 BTW). The Last Outer Atoll trip is a bit of cherry. Not only do you get the Outer Atoll trip but you leg it back on the northward journey to Male. This trips opens up a whole new playing field and all the breaks are yours to surf.

THE BEST OF MALDIVES SURFARI starting in Gaafu Dhaal atoll (Sth) and finishing in the Male atolls in the North you ‘ll spend approx 5-7 days surfing Gaafu Dhaal atoll before heading up to the remote Central atolls to surf breaks on the East and West sides.  Then travel to the Male atolls to end your trip surfing a couple of the more well known Northern breaks like Sultans, Cokes, Jails etc… This is an amazing trip at no extra cost to the standard Gaafu Dhaal trips.  A bit more travel involved (steaming at night) however the variety of uncrowded surf on offer will blow you away!

Who is Stumpy and what does he do? : Stumpy has been surf guiding the Maldives for close to a decade now. As one of a few select crew to pioneer the Outer Atolls he’s privy to all the secrets and knows the moods of the area. His forecasts are spot on and can call which spot will be firing and when with an almost supernatural ability. The outer Atoll is a good stomping ground for surf but you really have to know what’s going on.  A lot of operators  over there now are just playing follow the leader when it comes to getting you swell. On Handhu-Fahli however don’t be surprised if the crew are hauling anchor in your sleep and sneaking quietly to uncrowded destinations leaving the rest behind. Stumpy and the crew go that extra mile for you so nothings a hassle and he’s a good character too if you do the trip you’ll probably end up great mates for life. Stumpy’s advice is always priceless too.  He consults with you and the group to get an understanding of what type of breaks you want to surf and any other  info he needs to make an educated decision on where you should surf . Then before jumping overboard into an unknown reef pass, you’ll get a run down on the wave.  From best take off point (what landmark to line up with), how the wave behaves, when to get off and how to get back out with minimum hassle.

Hi All,

Andrew Rigby (PNG Explorer captain and frothing surf pioneer) has started filming their trips and posting them on Youtube. This last one came through and it looks like SOOOOOO MUCH FUN. Not macking, gnarly waves but clean, fun and NO CROWDS. I challenge anyone on the East  Coast  to find a similar wave with no-one else on it but your mates in this miserable wave drought we are currently Suffering. Ahhhhh…. we need to escape summer frustrations.

Tupira’s had a bit of an overhaul lately, new management, new menu and better service.  They’ve just send out the first swell report for the 2011/2012 Summer. The swell put on a fun 2-5ft for most of the trip. Looks like a great trip – Good to see some North Swells coming through.

Week One, Summer 2011/2012

Tupira Surf Camp

The first guests of the season were greeted by small,  (1 foot) clean and fun surf right out front at Tupira, so everyone had the chance for a warm-up session.

Monday brought small and soft waves so most of the crew went to visit Mewok Village followed by a bush walk and the boat went out trawling but no luck, a few Mackerel were seen jumping but no hook-ups.

Tuesday and Wednesday were both pumping right out front with strong, clean (2 to 4 foot) waves coming through sunrise to sunset. With the boys taking turns, there were more than enough waves for everyone with many waves unridden as there were some six waves sets with only one person out.

The goofy footers took a ride over to Sakula and some (3-5 foot) clean, fast waves were found.

Thursday brought clean but dropping (2 foot) waves.

Friday was also clean but small.

There were some small Tuna caught as well as some good size Rainbow Runner.

Well I know we keep saying this “2011 Indian Ocean season Pumped” we are just trying to bring home the complete awesomeness of the season that was 2011… This came in from Aura Surf Resort – North Sumatra from a  visit earlier this month. The swell is still cranking for anyone interested and Aura do offer ‘off season’ rates and accommodation. The Indian Ocean never really sleeps and ‘Off Season’ is a myth.

If the below images have got you hot and bothered then maybe you should Get In Early for 2012. Spaces are filling fast and Aura Surf Resort are a participating operator so Now is the Time!
