Report No: Week 40

Period: 29^th Sept to 8^th Oct

Sunday.

First day with World Surfaris group: Geoff, Red, Eric, Marti, Henri and Nev. Light southerly winds and a good south swell provided great conditions to head to some isolated spots.  We got to the boat at dawn and motored to Spot-X, a fun wrapping right hander that although was a little side-shore, had really fun head high walls, with a few barrels here and there.  After about an hour the breeze picked up a bit so we pulled anchor and headed to Y-Tops, a more serious left-hander that had overhead sets, and some fast sections.  It was great for some turns but the breeze wasn’t allowing it to barrel.  Later in the Afternoon, as the tide started to drop, the wind swung offshore and it started to tube strait away!  Everyone got some great waves and we got back to the resort just in time for beer o’clock.

Monday.

Again conditions looked good for the same stretch of coast.  We surfed head high Y-Tops, with a few bigger sets, which were providing some nice tubes again.  The wind however started to pick up, so we decided to motor about 45 minutes to another left, Pebbles.  Pebbles had a wedging take-off on the inside bowl, which was a barrel from take-off.  Marti and I got a few fun shoulder high waves and I also proceeded to get a nice Samoan tattoo on the inside after falling off.  Meanwhile Red, Geoff and Henri went out the back, where head high walls were peeling along the reef, better for turns.  A very successful day once again!

Tuesday.

The winds shifted to the west overnight so we headed to a spot that looked good for the swell direction.  We got to Special K, which was empty, providing perfectly offshore, head high sets.  The take off had a few barrels and was really sling-shotting you into the next bowl, which rolled along the inside reef.  Only Geoff, Marti and Henri came out this day and really scored fun un-crowded waves.  We got back to Sa’Moana Resort and the other guys were a bit disappointed to hear that they missed out.  You’ve got to be in it to win it!

Wednesday.

We woke up early on the low-tide and the guys decided to do the “Trenches Tour”.  These natural sea caves allow you to snorkel through the lava tubes into the ocean.  On the ocean side we did a couple of fun rock jumps which was good and on the way back we checked out the waterfall.  After having their noses rubbed in it the previous afternoon, Nev, Eric and Red wanted to head out to Special K, while the other guys had a relaxing afternoon at Sa’Moana.  Even though the swell had dropped a little, the wind was still very good and we were greeted by chest to shoulder high waves, that were perfect for some turns providing 100m rides.

Thursday.

We woke up greeted by a bigger swell than the previous two days, with the same westerly winds.  Everyone was keen to go and see what Special K was doing in these conditions.  We had an addition to the team, Bevan who was happy to get some waves in boardies, coming from New Zealand!  We got out there and were pleasantly surprised that it was holding the swell and there were overhead sets, with a few nice barrels followed by wrapping walls into the inside section.  Everyone surfed and surfed until they couldn’t paddle much anymore and we headed back to Sa’Moana to have a few refreshments and play Bocce.  Bocce is a pretty addictive ball game originating  from Europe.  Frenchman, Henri, was really into it and we all soon were, which was awesome with a few beers after a long day’s surf!

Friday.

After five days of good waves everyone was pretty surfed out but Marti, Geoff and Henri were still keen to make use of the nice swell we’d been given, while the other guys went and did the “Apia Tour”.  The light winds were changing direction a lot so we headed out in the boat with no real plan, just taking it how it came.  We started to head to Y-Tops when the wind went really westerly, so we promptly turned around, threw out a couple lures and trolled over Mt. Fusi, an ocean mount that has a lot of sea life around it, rising from 60 metres to about 15m.  We were heading to a spot called Barra’s, a fun right-hander that looked promising on arrival despite the strong offshore.  The guys got out there and it was quite fun, about head high with some overhead sets and a few barrels.  The wind ended up dying completely about 2 hours before dark and the tide and swell were perfect for Barra’s, which started to produce some solid overhead sets, almost double overhead.  There were heaps and heaps of tubes and we scored it with nobody else in sight.  It’s a really unique wave that sometimes has a waist high roll-in to the bowl, which was going pretty square and spitting on the good ones.  We got back to Sa’Moana well after dark and we were super happy.  We found that everyone on the Apia Tour had turned it into a bit of a pub crawl!  With everybody in high spirits we ended up having a very fun night, including Bocce of course and then a sleep in was unanimously agreed upon for Saturday morning.

Saturday.

The last day of everyone’s trip split the group up again, some opting to relax and unwind fully at Sa’Moana, while we headed out in the boat just after lunch.  We had a look at a fun left-hander, Wakka’s, that had waist to shoulder high sets.  There were 5 or 6 other people out there so we decided to check Pebbles, which went side-shore as soon as we got there, so we headed to Special K where we had fun shoulder high walls, although a bit windy and a few other people out there, the waves were fun for some turns.  We were waiting for the other boat to leave and a bit over an hour before sunset, they did.  The wind had dropped to pretty much nothing by now and it allowed the waves to get really fun, for the guys to catch their last of the trip.  In that last hour everyone got heaps of waves and the vibe was awesome, everyone knew that we’d had such a good week for waves.  We motored back to the mooring and Henri had a go on the wake-skate behind the boat, which he got the hang of pretty quickly!  All in all, an excellent week of waves and a real pleasure to meet everyone who passed through Sa’Moana this week.  Good times!

October is almost upon us. 4 more days and the Summer season kicks off there’s some small activity in the northern pacific already as if its waiting and getting ready to send the first small ripples down south to the north facing breaks of Carolines, PNG, Samoa and Tonga.  Summer spots are still pretty open if anyone is keen to escape their locals dismal offerings. If not hopefully these pics will put in good stead and see you through until the next swell arrives.

Summer is creeping up, slowly but surely the sun is rising that little bit earlier. Soon we’ll be shedding wet-suits, flicking the tiny beads of sweat from our brows and frustratingly kicking the sheets off at night as we listen to rhythmic tappings of ceiling fans, the incessant noise both comforting and frustrating – Personally I can’t wait. This Winter has seemed a little overbearing plus its hard to get up in the cold and the dark to catch the AM surf and the sun sets before you can get the afternoon one in. Don’t get me wrong, this Winter has been kind to Australia.  Swell has come in and smothered our coastlines like an welcome hug from a fat, over zealous aunt. But I’m over sniffles, cold feet and wrestling in and out of the rubber suit I want board shorts, bikinis and the greasy coconut smell of  wax melting in the  sunshine. Summer won’t be the Coca Cola advert I’m imaging, I always feel cheated by this but its not the first time we’ve been lied to by a corporate beverage company and it won’t be the last. However peering out from the end of this Winter over the dizzying heights of a Summer filled with potential and promise I can’t help but to feel optimistic. So here’s to a Summer riddled with Surf, Sunshine, scantly clad beach bodies and gloriously long days followed by warm nights and if not….. well there’s always a Summer Surf Escape. Looking at the charts we know they’re getting swell this time of year, but still nothing….. Until yesterday, phew! Justin our ever tripping consultant has returned from New Caledonia and had fantastic time playing with our French Neighbours in their surf rich backyard……. In Justin’s own words

Easter in New Cal

After spending a long weekend in New Caledonia last October it didn’t take me long before I was booking to come back…this time with the family. It’s an incredible place only a 2.5 hour flight from the East Coast…French flair, great food, crystal clear water, uncrowded waves, world-class fishing with a great atmosphere. We had seen a glimpse of New Caledonia’s perfection in October but the swell limited our chance of seeing the true Ouano & Secrets. Being a goofy footer, New Cal is a dream destination. They do have some great right-handers but the best waves in my eyes are the lefts of Ouano & Secrets at Nekweta.

With a 5 day long weekend for Easter & Anzac Day, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to zip across the Tasman/Coral Sea. After work on the Thursday, I met my family at the Brissie airport for our late flight across to Noumea. Our first stop is the Ouano surf camp which is approx 1 hour’s drive north of the International airport. Seb, the surf camps’ organiser, met us at 12 midnight for the short drive to the camp.  Seb handles all of the bookings and most of the transportation from the airport and between the surf camps. He is very passionate about New Cal and is a great source of information which is extremely handy to have in a country where English isn’t the no. 1 language.

For this trip the swell forecast looked more promising than my last visit…3-4ft of SSW swell and light winds. We got to Ouano on the Friday morning with no wind & 2-3ft waves peeling through with only 2 locals out. Not bad considering it’s Good Friday here in New Cal.  It was by no means big but the sets gave fun 150-200m rides with the occasional inside barrel section. We surfed for a few hours before motoring further inside the lagoon to sample some of the area’s pristine snorkelling. It’s great to see strong conservation efforts at work here as we are rewarded with a snorkelling area teeming with sea-life.  Pee Wee (Stefan) our passionate surf guide then takes us to an isolated island for a picnic lunch consisting of freshly-made chicken & salad baguettes…simple yet very tasty. We head back to the Ouano surf camp and pack up for our 1 hour trip north to the Nekweta Surf Camp.

Nekweta surf camp is located near Bourail at Le Roche Percee beach.  Manu & Stephanie run the surf camp at Nekweta and are great hosts…Manu is a 5^th generation local and he is a surf & fish guru of the local area.  Manu’s partner Stephanie is a fantastic cook serving up delicious food for breakfast, lunch & dinner…you certainly can’t lose weight easily here. Breakfast is generally continental with freshly baked baguettes, home-made jams (papaya, guava, etc), tea & coffee. Lunch is generally baguettes with salad & chicken or leg ham.  Nothing fancy but tasty nonetheless. Dinner is my favourite at Nekweta. You will get anything from Venison & Lasagne to fresh fish & Mudcrabs,  always with a neat side & rich dessert after if you can fit it in.

We had 3 nights & 3 days at Nekweta in total. The first day we had a relaxing morning before hitting Guaro right only 5 mins from the camp. The swell was 3-4ft but slightly windy. It didn’t matter though as there was only one local guy on the wave so we were out there in a flash. Guaro is not a particularly heavy wave but offers long walls with plenty of whackable sections. We had it for a few hours before we decided to pull the pin and head back to the camp for a sunset drive up the coast to the famous Poe Beach. The following morning we got up earlier and headed straight out to Secrets. The full moon meant that the currents were stronger than usual but we still got some really fun waves with only us in the water. I had expected to see at least a few others out considering it was a long weekend but this wasn’t the case. We tried our luck flicking poppers for big GT (Giant Trevally) after the surf but the wind was not co-operating for fishing. We had a few hook-ups but failed to bring anything to the boat. We had a good session at Guaro right on the way back in before the sun got the better of us and we called it a day.

Our last morning saw beautiful conditions at Secrets. We surfed for a few hours with less than 4 of us in the water. This was by far the best that I had surfed the wave so I was stoked. Secrets is a quite intimidating wave breaking in very clear, shallow water. Most of the waves require 100% commitment from the get go with great barrel sections. I like to think of it as a smaller version of Teauhupoo so it’s definitely a wave you need to respect. The wind stayed light all day so we headed further in to Guaro right after our Secrets session. The wave was reeling perfectly for up to 150m. We surfed as long as our bodies would let us and headed back in for a late lunch in the mid-afternoon. Our flight back to OZ was scheduled early the next morning so we packed our bags and bid farewell to Manu & Stephanie.  Seb drove us the hour back to the Ouano surf camp for sunset beers and Serg’s (Ouano cook) excellent Pizza & Steak.

April to October is the main surf season for New Cal, like Indonesia or the Maldives. We were there for the first month basically and April certainly delivered…we had faultless weather and great-sized clean waves.  I’ll head back to New Cal again in the near future.  In my opinion, you can’t beat uncrowded waves less than 3 hours from home.

Cath one of our consultants and all round good gal has recently returned from a famil trip to Samoa. In a nutshell if you haven’t been to this pacific paradise yet or are umming and aahhhing about where your next great surf adventure then you may have just found your dream destination. The below is a brief rundown from Cath about Aganoa Beach retreat.  Located on the Northern island of Sa’vaii Aganoa comes in as a great budget option,  it has pretty basic facilities but with great surf out front and friendly Hosts Keith and his wife Lanuola you can’t really go wrong….. Please find attached some photos of Aganoa from my trip to Samoa.

It is pretty basic. Definitely not for princesses! Awesome experience though and amazing place – right on the water. Great for snorkelling too for the non surfers. Keith has 4 kids too so he said they always love it when a family arrives as the kids will have someone to play with!

The beachfront fales that have bathrooms attached only have cold water showers. The shared facilities have hot water showers. You will see a photo of the shared facilities attached.

Keith said that there will be consistent surf out the front up until September. He said it hasn’t even been worth going anywhere but out the front of the resort. There were only 3 people in the water when I was there so definitely uncrowded.

There is surf near this resort in Dec, Jan and Feb.

Definitely best to get a car in Savaii.  Keith can organise when they get there for approx $70 a day.

Keith told me that the rate which includes dinner is a three course dinner – soup, main and dessert. Generally the main is some sort of fish caught that day. He said it is always prepared in different ways Eg: Cajun fish, fish cooked in coconut, curries. He said it is no problems to cater for vegetarians or other diets…..

        Matanivusi Surf resort Fiji, doesn’t usually send us a lot through. The below images came in yesterday afternoon from Brian and Donna the owners after they caught some summer sets with guests. 

Since the 2010 Fiji Surfing decree lifted the exclusivity on surf breaks guests have been enjoying access to a number of world renown breaks. The initial fears of overcrowding seem groundless and Fiji is has become a real oppurtunity for anyone wanting to score some wave Pacific wave Perfection.
