The Keramas Beach club is the place to hang

On Tue 11 December during my recent family holiday/business trip to Bali, my wife Jacqui, son Jai and daughter Mia hooked up with PT World Surfaris Bali owner, Michael Hill, wife Made’, daughter Sienna and twins Keisha and Kaynan for a day out at the new Komune Resort at Keramas.

Michael already has World Surfaris an office set up in the beach warung for arranging surf trips and day tours for Komune guests and spends a bit of time in this part of the world with his head office just down the road in Sanur. This was my first visit to the completed resort.

On arrival we were greeted by smiling staff at the impressive Komune reception before walking the tropical corridor through the organic vege garden, across the bridge to the Beachclub, Pool and beach with Keramas surfbreak out front!

Agus and the beachclub crew welcomed us as we grabbed a long table overlooking the pool, gardens and Keramas surf break for lunch and a much needed coldie on a hot Bali day! Bintangs, Frozen Margaritas, Juices and Soft drinks were ordered and then a selection of gourmet pizzas including Chilli Prawn and Smoked Salmon along with some pasta dishes with a favourite spag boll for the kids and some Calamari with wasabi aioli to accompany the drinks! Once we got our Coldies it was time to hit the very tempting pool whilst the food was being prepared.

The pool setting is something straight out of The Chillout sessions or Cafe Del Mar with exceptionally funky round white tiles that make the water an irresistible turquoise!  Surrounded by decadent all weather sofas with ample shade and bean bags on the lawn, this is the ultimate place to chill in between surf sessions out front. The pool stools on the front side with benched pool edge act as the ultimate surf viewing area and a great place for Michael and I to have our AGM J The kids had a ball in the pool whilst the ladies reclined on the sun chairs until our waiter signalled our food was ready…all very civilized.

20 steps back and we are seated again on the shaded circular decking of the very impressive beach club complete with its centered circular bar.  We proceeded to gorge ourselves silly, whilst other guests drank, ate and surfed the net (free Wi-Fi) in all manner of seating that the beachclub offers including bench seats overlooking the break, sumptuous lounges with funky green cushions or other tables on the shaded deck. The Pizzas were spectacular yet simple in true Italian style crust with delicious toppings. The kids gave big thumbs up to the spag boll and trust me my 12 year old daughter is a bolognaise connoisseur! Whilst the Calamari was perfectly crunchy, definitely not chewy and the wasabi aioli a treat.  The menu had a great variety of other dishes from western burgers and organic salads which looked great on other tables to Indonesian favourites of Nasi or Mie Goreng, Satay sticks etc.

More Coldies washed down the food and once the plates were cleared we were of course tempted with the awesome sounding deserts and coffee.  We opted to share a few and my son loved the caramelized banana fritters whilst we shared a pannacotta and the others enjoyed a fruit sorbet selection.  The Cafй Latte’s were excellent and not too weak & milky!  The prices are very reasonable and probably about half the price of what you would pay for a similar meal at an Australian resort or restaurant.

I’ve put my gourmet traveller food critique hat on here to write this as I know how important food and beverage is to making a great holiday.  You can’t control the weather or the surf but it’s nice to know you can stay somewhere that does have HIGH QUALITY CONTROL on the food and beverage.

Agus and the beachclub staff were exceptionally friendly and my family and I are now talking about staying a few days at Komune on our next visit to Bali.

On the walk to the rooms

After we left the beach club we had a quick inspection of the hotel rooms and I was really impressed with the finishing touches on the accommodation.  Each air conditioned room features a double or 2 x single beds with a day bed and small table and chair and very well appointed bathroom with luxury shower head.  The cool polished concrete floor is perfect for the climate and the decor colors once again tie in with the funky theme throughout the whole property.  The glass sliders have timber shutters for privacy and each room has its own front deck area complete with a board rack to fit your quiver.  The hanging vines and corridor between the room blocks creates a very tropical feeling.  Considering the budget price tag on these rooms, it’s an absolute bargain and if you are looking for a cool place to stay in Bali away from the hustle bustle and chaos of Kuta/Legian/Seminyak etc. then Komune should be on your list.  My wife is well traveled and likes nice places to stay and she is looking forward to staying at Komune in the future especially once the next stage of accommodation (Family Villas) are complete!

Komune Resort Keramas has been coming along nicely, there where a few slight hiccups and the opening date had to be pushed back a whole month, honestly though its all for the better. The latest progress shots have come through lately and we’re pretty impressed the place look like its worth waiting for.  Have flick through and see for yourself. (We included some surf snaps as well, after all it is Keramas).

Komune’s official opening will be on October 17th. However the very stylish resort will be doing a soft opening from the 6th of October to the 16th by hosting the competitors of the Oakley World Junior comp, held at the famous Keramas Beach break straight out front of the resort.
