Kandui has sent through their latest swell report, to us surfed starved office workers the pics have turned us into a pack of drooling idiots.  November by everyone’s definition falls firmly and safely into the “Off Season” category- I’d laugh at that if the surf wasn’t so depressingly fun looking, after reams of crappy surf at the local its enough to make me want to cry…

Admittedly its not the raging bomb sets that we were getting pictures off throughout Winter, but it looks like so much fun – the equivalent of Go Karting with your mates as opposed to racing supercars. The consequences aren’t the same and afterwards you can all laugh at the tricks you tried…

Nov 4th surf report.

The off season seems to have come a little early and waves have been small so far with this latest group, but we have been having fun.  We’ve been surfing Burgerworld a lot.  Beng Beng was also fun one day, Bankvaults and Nipusi were alright a couple of days, and there is always 4 Bobs and the waves around the resort.  We didn’t surf one day because the weather was pretty ugly, but other than that we have been getting waves.  And it’s just been a fun trip with Taylor Steele dropping by with his posse to shoot a Corona commercial and then they dressed up as pirates on Halloween night and pillaged our bar!  Good times.  We have also had a lot of groms on the island and that is always cool.  Nothing stoked me more than seeing groms froth!  We were all there at one time, eh?  Dylan and Brandon are from Cali and they were ripping.  We also had Jarad from Bali who Rizal has taken under his wing.  He recently won a contest in Bali and he’s ripping.  He has obviously been watching Rizal and taking notes!  I’ve attached photos of the three ripping groms.

Nov 4th surf report, part II

Nothing stokes me more than seeing groms froth except for seeing extra little groms froth!  Rizal brought his oldest son, eight year old Varun, to the island.  The kid is pumped to surf all the time and especially can’t wait to get out to 4 Bobs when the tide is high enough.  He even surfed, and made waves, at tiny Rifles one day when the tide was high enough to be safe for him.  He got a good one at Burgerworld as well, but caught a set on the head immediately afterwards (anyone that surfs Burgerworld knows what that’s about all too well), and that left little Varum longing for 4 Bobs!  Look for this grom to be ruling Bali as soon as Rizal decides to pass the torch.   Rizal is one of my favorite people that come to Kandui and it is super cool to see him pushing Varum into waves and getting more happiness from seeing his son get waves than himself.  But when Rizal decides to get a wave, look out because he is still ripping!!!  Attached are a couple pictures of Rizal and a few of Varum.  How is the sequence of the little guy laying down a rail grab cutty!  The kid’s already better than most of us!

Nov 4th surf report, part III

Another cool thing we have been doing on this trip is giving away water filters in the local villages.  John Rose was here during the Padang earthquake a few years ago and he witnessed all the devastation.  That was the spark that ignited his passion to help people in third world countrys like Indonesia.  With help from Bob Hurley and others, he has been traveling the world giving away water filters that strain dangerous, and potentially fatal, germs from the impure water that people use in places such as the Mentawais.  I’m sure you will be hearing more about this as we plan on Kandui being the hub for distribution in this area.  It has been fun going to the villages and having our local crew demonstrate the filters to the inevetable crowd that gathers whenever a bunch of lilly white folks wander into town.  The hordes of kids are always the highlight in those villages, smiling, laughing, cheering.  It was a very satisfying experience and we want to keep that ball rolling.  The program is called “Waves for Water” and I’m sure you can check out the Hurley website for pictures of our adventures and for more information.  Besides being a humanatarian, John Rose was a professional surfer and he still rips!  Attached are some pictures of him and some of the other Hurley crew.  There is also a great picture of John getting some air on his shoulder high wave at Nipusi as Varun Tanjung is sizing up his double overhead bomb!  It was our ever changing desktop picture for a while.  Nice!

Sorry we’ve been a bit quiet on the Blog front lately,  we’ve been a bit swamped working on a couple of things (good things, big things, surf things with gratuitous amounts of awesomeness) - all will be revealed soon.

In the meantime to keep you up to date,  Kandui Resort sent this out Oct 29th and its another slap in the face to any surfer stuck trying to get a wave on the east coast of Australia at the moment.  If the local isn’t performing this is probably the next best thing. This or book a trip and mark down the days on the calendar. Enjoy a mind surf guys…. hope the swell picks up soon. How’s the awesome wood carving by AtMan?

Oct 29th surf report.

Our latest group left today.  Thanks to Brad for writing the surf reports for us.  This crew started the trip catching the tail end of that epic, mid October run of good surf.  The second half of the trip was spent doing a lot of Bugerworld runs with a few solo sessions at lesser know spots mixed in.  All in all, the boys were stoked.  We had a rare day yesterday in that we didn’t look for surf.  That only happens about 5 days a season!!!  We could have gotten some waves, but everyone was Bugerworld’ed out.  Game 6 of the World Series was on (it went 11 innings!) so it was just too easy to hang out and enjoy a relaxing day on the island.  Plus everyone was up kind of late the night before with the medicine men dropping by to dance for us.  We also had a bonfire yesterday on, formerly know as, Snake Island, then One Palm Island, now Sand Island.  We brought beers and the dogs and had a great time.  Rokok, the dog, gave us a scare though!  He didn’t like the fire (or the company, we’re not quite sure!), so he decided to sneak off and go home.  The only problem with that is that Sand Island is over a kilometer from the resort and the ocean was choppy with a ripping current and the sun had gone down!  The boys had some long faces when they came back, fearing the worst, but that was quickly replaced with jubilation when they were met by Rokok on the beach.  He made the swim like a champion! You’ve never seen a dog get so much attention.  We’re thinking that might have been Rokok’s ploy all along since Huero has been getting so much attention lately after what looked like a near death experience.  These dogs are giving us ulcers!  Stay away from the light boys!  Huero is doing great, by the way, and is almost back to his normal self.

Our next group is looking at some Burgerworld to start, then a couple of swells are forecast for the later part of their trip.  We’re hoping for some late season magic!

Oct 27th surf report by Brad Maker.

It’s funny how after those first few frothing days everyone slips into an easy routine.  This place is so good for that, and I’m sure everyone who’s been here knows what I’m talking about: couple of cups of joe, huge breakfast (new this year is a menu ticket where you check off all the things that you want), internet check, early surf boat, second surf boat, maybe a late sesh out front, and inevitably it’s Bintang time.

The past few days have been pretty small.  We’ve hit a few places here and there to score uncrowded occasional sets, but most of the action has been Burgerworld.  There have always been a few other boats, with a range of talent from long boarders to pros, but generally the crowds have been pretty mellow.  The place has several takeoff spots so everyone has been getting a few.

I’ve got to let you in on a little known opportunity here.  Most of the cool woodwork that you see around Kandui is done by AtMan, the Kandui resident Mentawai woodcarver.  If you just ask, AtMan will make you a custom carving.  Ray told us about the monkey carved in the old uma door that hangs in the restaurant and how the Mentawai believe they bring good luck, so I asked AtMan to make me something with a monkey on it.  He started with a two hour search around the island to find the perfect hardwood log, lugged it back to Kandui and chain sawed off a plank, and a couple of days later check out what he made.  How’s that for a centerpiece on a wall of Kandui surf pics?!  How much does AtMan charge?  “Up to you!”

Coming back from a week off is usually as safe bet in the middle of October, the Indian Ocean swell is dropping off and the change of the guard to summer destinations hasn’t really happened yet.  It’s a quiet limbo period, usually. But not this year it seems! After getting back I’ve realized that October was obviously a sick month for Swell throughout the Indian Ocean. Surf reports have been coming in thick and fast from our Indian Ocean operators and they are all jaw dropping.

The most annoying thing would be the lack of crowds, everyone seemed to avoid the beginning of the ‘low season’ and those that didn’t SCORED!

Kandui has sent through a whole heap of pics and reports, long story short Kandui Resort has been cooking.  ‘Low Season’ Bah!

Oct. 14th surf report.

Sorry for the lapse in surf reports!  I’ve been a little under the weather as my bad luck season continues.  My foot got stuck in a hole at Hideaways and was twisted around pretty good.  That was followed by a week long throbbing, mind numbing toothache.  But on the bright side, I had one good day before I got the cold that is going around.  But hold off your sympathy until after you see some of the photos!

We were expecting a nice swell to start filling in the afternoon of the 14th, but it came in early.  Our crew went to Hideaways with there shortboarts and they got more than they expected.  Well over head waves, perfect conditions, and only a couple of other lucky guys out!  The rest of us that didn’t go had a hard time watching the slide show, but we would be ready to go on the 15th when the swell was forecast to be bigger!

Oct 15th surf report

We see a lot of good surf out here.  A lot of good surf!  So when those of us that have spent years out here are raving about what a good day it was, it was probably a very good day.  That was today.  The waves were well over head to double over head plus, the conditins were great, and the crowd was super light and mellow.  Hideaways is a great wave, but it’s not often when the barrels open up round and stay open the entire length of the wave.  Today it was doing just that and it was a tube fest!  It was like a surf movie with each set.  Barrel, barrel, barrel, come out.  Barrel, barrel, barrel, come out.  Ridiclulous.  Even Christie, long time owner of Wavepark a stones throw away from the break, was raving.  Everyone was taking turns and giving waves away and hooting each other in.  It was like it should be.  Stoked.  Attached are a few photos, but it was one of days were single shots do not tell the story.  I’ll post some sequences soon.

Oct 18th surf report.

It was transfer day today, and this report is for all those that had to go home this morning while the swell was forecast to be peaking.  That’s always a tough pill to swallow, but I’m happy to tell you that you didn’t miss much.  It was big, to be sure, but it was also kind of wild with funky winds.  There were a couple of waves at Rifles, but we didn’t even paddle out after all the perfect surf we got on this trip.  You guys scored!

I just have to attach this picture from our epic sessions at Hideaways again.  This my be my favorite picture of Hideaways ever.  Fitting it’s Christie, Hideaway’s longest local.  Beautiful.

Oct. 19th surf report

Our swell was still pumping today and conditions got better.  Our strong southeast winds pattern has been breaking up for the last couple of weeks (lucky they were blowing for that Hideaways swell though!)  and some other spots have been opening up.  Our first day guests went to Bankvaults and another spot.  Crowds were light at the former and zero at the latter.  Both spots had some nice waves before the winds went west, then some of the guys headed for Rifles and got some some fun ones there as well before the tide got too low.  I’ll attach pictures from all the spots.  I’m sure you can tell which is which by now.  Huero (Weddo, the dog) gave us a scare today after being beat up pretty good by a neighboring dog.  He was looking really bad and I was fearing the worst so no surf for me this day.  I’m happy to say he is improving and I think he will be fine.  Send up a little prayer for him!

Our 4 time returning guest, Brad Maker, will be giving me a break and writing some surf reports this week.  It’s looking like we will be going into more of an off season type pattern when this swell fades this next day or so (after a very good October!) but we will be sure to get some good waves.

Friday, Oct 21st surf report

Justice went with the first boat to Bankvaults/Nipussi.  Ray stayed behind, planning to hang out with the second boatload of goofy foots at the mellower breaks.  But when we dropped off a couple of late risers at glassy, slightly overhead, barreling Bankvaults, Ray started to get the shakes.  It was totally classic:  “Would you guys mind so much if I jumped out here?”  Less than a minute later he splashed in with a knotted t-shirt and a big grin, and was probably barreled before we got around the point.

We checked a super mellow little known break called Good Times, but it was sectioning badly, so with the north wind dying we headed to Being Being.  As usual, it looked flat when we pulled up but 15 minutes later the waves started rolling in with the better set waves going about head high by east coast standards.  Glassy water and three or four guys out… we were living large for sure.

August 27th surf report

We’ve had a lot of strong, southish winds this month, and the last few days of this trip has been no exception.  Kind of a shame because we have also had swell after bombing swell blasting the southern reefs where the brunt of the energy was, but only a fraction got around to the west facing reefs where the winds were offshore.  It was still plenty of fun and there were the occasional sets that got the heart pumping.  Attached are pictures of Hideaway’s, Beng Beng, Ebay, Kandui’s and Pitstop’s.

Our new guests arrived this afternoon.  The forecast for them is looking like lighter winds and smaller swell for the first few days, then it looks like the Indian Ocean is firing up again with some good swells.

Aug 31st surf report

We’ve been in a pretty strong south to southeast wind patten that doesn’t seem to want to let up.  I haven’t seen this for a few years, but it’s definitely locked in right now.  That wind is not such a bad thing if the swell is pumping and lot’s of energy is wrapping into spots that take that wind, but if there is not a lot of water moving then it can be frustrating, knowing that spots would be going off if it were not for the wind blowing it out.  That’s been the case lately, although we are still getting plenty of fun, head high or so waves at Hideaway and Beng Beng, with the occasional side shore 4 Bobs session thrown in as well.  The wind pattern did break for one day and we got some fun, overhead Nipusi, and even a few good waves at Bankvaults where we have not surfed for some time.  Pictures attached.  Great to get those sessions in.  Looks like the swell is creeping up for the next couple of days, then it looks like the swell train is going to arrive again with an endless string, at this point, of swells coming out of the southwest.  That’s a good angle for the wind pattern we are in and there should be plenty of size, so we could be in for a couple of weeks of good surf.  Fingers crossed!

Sep 6th surf report.

We had a good dose of wind with that last group’s trip, but the surf gods smiled on them for the last couple of days with a good swell and some east in that wind.  We’ve been surfing Kandui, Ebay, and Beng Beng.  All of them have been fun, and even a bet scary at Kandui’s on the odd set.  Pictures attached.  There were probably about 4 or 5 broken boards out there yesterday, and there were not many people out!  Kandui takes no prisoners.

Looks like some wind and average swell for the beginning of the next group, then a nice swell is due and maybe even some light and variable winds.  Should be a fun trip.

Aug 18th surf report

We had a big south swell start to roll in today.  Everyone was hoping Rifles, but the winds were strong out of the south and it was blown.  Hideaways was looking good though, but much of the swell was passing it by so it was much smaller than the south facing reefs.  We surfed there for the morning session and everyone got some good ones.  Photos attached.  The winds turned around midday so we sent the boys over to one of our spots that is not surfed by many others and, sure enough, it was going off and empty!  (Greem water photos)  Only one other guy that lives in the area ever showed up.  It’s a peak and both sides were working good.  Our crew were stoked to split the peak until the wind switched again late in the afternoon.  A couple of us stayed back to tow a novelty wave, the peak in between Aframes and Rifles that occasionally breaks on big swells.  That peak usually rolls through and only gives people a little thrill as we motor out to Rifles.  It caps once in a while and then quickly reforms, but rarely actually breaks.  But it was so big today that it was consistently breaking and I saw what looked to be 25 foot face SETS rolling though the channel.  We couldn’t have expected it to last and we only got a couple of triple overhead waves before it stopped breaking, but it was fun and we will definitely be looking at that again the next time it gets that big.  I towed Justice into some big Aframes after that, then we had to go check out the show at Rifles as a few pros showed up and to take on big, low tide, slightly onshore, and more than slightly sketchy Rifles.  It was triple overhead on the sets with clamshelling barrels and not much water on the reef, but they were handling as pros do.  I’m sure you will see pictures of Nathan Fletcher, John Florence, and Dane Gudaskas doing their thing out there in a mag or website near you.  Nathan Fletcher is a maniac, taking off on bombs at the most shallow spot on the reef.  Hats off!  Looking at smaller, but still big, south swell in the morning.

Aug 19th surf report

The swell was smaller today, but there were still some big sets.  Our first boat went to Kandui’s, lead by it’s number one frother, Justice.  Our second boat went by Kandui’s as we headed for Beng Beng to see if any of the guys there wanted to go there.  Almost everyone piled it!  At that time, the wind was a bit funky, the waves were a bit funky, and it was busy!  But the ones that stayed behind with Justice had the last laugh because the crowds left, it got glassy, and they scored big!!!  Photos attached.  Meanwhile, we hit Beng Beng and were stoked to see fun waves and no one out.  But it didn’t last long as 2 boats quickly descended on us and those guys were frothing big time over shoulder high Beng Beng and causing a bad vibe, but we had the last laugh as well because the wind tuned a little bit and we high tailed it to our peak which was as empty and as fun as it was the day before!  We surfed it until the wind mercifully changed and we could take our burned out bodies back to the resort.  We got back for “lunch” around 4pm!  Looking at smaller surf tomorrow, but not flat by any means.

Aug 20th surf report

We had a storm blow through last night it left behind west winds.  That’s a good thing if you like barreling rights because that’s the wind that Rifles likes, and there was enough of that south swell around for it to break with good sets still going a few feet overhead.  We were the first on it at dawn and it broke all day long, although the swell was definitely on it’s way out by the afternoon.  Our guests got some great waves and were stoked to get good winds for Rifles in the middle of a wind pattern that blows it out.  Our guests that did not want Rifles surfed 4 Bobs and Aframes which were both clean and breaking well all day as well.  It’s only day three and I think by the number of appointments our masseuse has on the books right now that it is safe to say everyone is surfed out!  We are expecting smaller surf tomorrow, although a new, more west, swell is due to start filling in by the afternoon.

Just got a sweet e-mail Bomb from Kandui Resort, Mentawais with some great ‘drool worthy’ wave shots. All shots are from 3 surrounding breaks of Hideaways, 4 Bobs and of course the infamous Rifles. There’s a lot to cover plus lets face it the written word doesn’t really convey the same sense of awe as the pics, so I’ll shut up and let you enjoy

Aug 14th surf report-Hideaways

We’ve been getting some fun surf lately and I had a few good pictures of our solo session at Hideaways with great conditions and a couple of good Beng Beng pictures picked out for a surf report, but today came along and trumped them.  We knew a swell was coming in and we got a taste of it yesterday afternoon, but we were surprised to see just how big the sets were at Hideaways this morning.  Double overhead plus on the bigger ones.  We were on it at the crack of dawn and only a handful of other surfers joined us later.  A fairly strong current pulling us out and, coupled with a pretty long period swell, were making the drops were pretty interesting and more than half the set waves were going unridden.  But we all managed to get some good ones before the winds suddenly switched.  The timing was actually good because our arms were all pretty much jelly by then fighting the current.  We were ready for a bite before our next surf

Aug 14th surf report-4 Bobs.

If you have never been to Kandui, 4 Bobs breaks directly in front of our restaurant, kind of how  the wave Restaurant’s breaks in front of the Tavarua Resort.  Restaurant’s is probably 100 times a better wave than 4 Bobs (in all my years, it’s the most perfect wave I’ve ever surfed), but 4 Bobs is about 100 times more consistent good for a fun surf on just about any day.  It’s by far the most consistent wave in the Mentawais, in my opinion, protected from just every about every wind, and it sucks in an incredible amount of swell considering it’s tucked way inside a few reefs and actually faces east!  Anyway, it’s hard to spend much time in our restaurant when 4 Bobs is firing in front of your face, and we were not back from our Hideaways surf long before we were back in the water at 4 Bobs.  The winds had turned offshore, the sun had come out, and it was about as good as it gets right up until dark.  Our guys got some great waves!  But, for some, their best waves were yet to come.

Aug 14th surf report-Rifles

Our guests had been catching great waves at 4 Bobs and Karambat Left for hours, and all that time Rifles had been cleaning up.  By the last couple of hours in the afternoon, the offshore winds had groomed the waves and it was on!  For the most part, it was just a little overhead and teasing us with barrels too fast to make, but occasionally there was a set that peeled like only Rifles can.  The good winds attracted a few boats to our area, and to the Rifles lineup as well, but it was all good.  The wind reports had been calling for consistent southeast wind (onshore winds for Rifles) for this trip and our guests were very doubtful they would see it break, so they were super stoked to be out there getting a few.  It was a great day with a ton of waves and variety!  Looking for dropping swell tomorrow, but still still pretty solid.

Aug 7th surf report.

Our newest group of guests arrived yesterday and walked straight into one of the biggest swells of the season.  Southish winds have been blowing strong pretty regularly the last couple of weeks and today was no exception.  Kandui’s was a no go.  Strong side offshore winds jumbling up the waves with giant, long period sets draining all the water off the reef before they mutated and surged toward the beach.  Kandui’s is our surfguide/videographer’s, Justice, favorite wave.  But he said that if he had never seen it break before, he would never want to check it again!  It was just so evil looking and totally unrideable.  So we went to Hideaways.  It was handling the wind and swell better, but it was still pretty out of control.  There were some guys out and we watched 5 people catch waves.  One made it, and the other four ate shit and took big waves on the head until they got flushed out down the reef.  “Let’s go to Ebay!”  It was definitely more manageable there.  The swell has to wrap a good bit to get in there and that cut down the size and cleaned it up.  There were still double overhead+ sets and the long period was draining the reef dry, but it was not too bad and we all ended up getting some good ones, albeit not all of our skin was brought back to the resort!  As we motored back, we could see that Baby Kandui was looking good.  As good as I’ve seen it in years!  Swell has to wrap quite a bit to get into that reef as well so the size was not to out of control and the lines had a chance to stretch out and clean up before breaking.  We drive by this wave everyday and it is rarely worth the paddle, but it was probably the best wave around today!   Justice has an injured knee, but it was looking so good that he couldn’t help strapping on a knee brace and getting a couple along with a few of the Kandui crew.  (Oure guests were tired after surfing Ebay all morning.)  We were late to the party, having surfed earlier, but everyone managed to get some good ones before the tide got too low.  Attached are 4 pictures of Baby Kandui’s (light green, boat shots) and 4 Ebay pics (darker green, land shots).  Pretty cool picture of our boat driver, Andy, with Justice in the foreground.  Swell is predicted to be bigger tomorrow!!!

Our first red blob arrived today.  The call was Kandui’s.  Conditions were clean and sets were going almost double overhead on the sets, although there were admittedly not that many of the bombs like that.  We had some friends from Electric stop by to give us some sunglasses and Peligroso Tequila yesterday and they were at Kandui’s this morning putting on a show.  Mark Heely got a ridiculous stand up barrel and came out smiling!  We can’t post the pictures of those guys in respect to professionals who are photographing them for magazines and/or ads, but I’m quite sure you will be seeing that wave in your near future in a mag or video.  There were a couple of top notch photographers, friends of ours that have stayed here before, taking water shots and they were in just in the right position to get what has to be some pretty sick stuff.  I don’t know how they do it with a wave that long and swimming against a current, but they always seem to manage to be in the right spot!  Kaliang also got the best barrel I have ever seen him get.  It was a long one and he came out!  Photo attached.  Good job Kaliang!  We had a very low tide in the afternoon so we were confined to surfing 4 Bobs and Karambat and Aframes, but the winds were pretty much non existent so it was a lot of fun.  The swell is suppose to back off a bit tomorrow, but we hope not too much! And we are still tracking our second and bigger swell due to start arriving on the 6th, but really kicking in on the 7th and 8th.

July 28^th Surf Report

Our new guests are already getting fun surf.  Looking at the wind/swell forecast when they got here, we figured we would be going to Beng Beng, Beng Beng, and then Beng Beng for the first few days.  But things have gone better than expected and we have also gotten fun waves at Hideaways, 4 Bobs, and we even got a fun little session in at Kandui’s.  But the the most unexpected was when our southish winds died and we shot over to Bankvaults and got a fun little session in!  (photos attached)

We are still tracking the glowing, now pulsating, red blob in the middle of the Indian Ocean.  There is some bombing swell coming our way around the 1st.  And it looks like this blob may have an evil twin trailing right behind it with even bigger surf around the 6th!  Yikes!

27thy July Surf Report

Our latest group of guests left today with smiles on their faces.  They got a nice swell to end their trip.  Kandui’s still had waves two days ago after our guest’s solo session on the 23rd, but the word was out and there were a few others on it.  It was also a bit smaller, but still plenty big enough to the the adrenaline pumping when the bigger sets rolled though.  We took the catamaran and hung out under the sun for the whole morning.  We also got some fun Beng Beng yesterday morning, and we had a really fun session at 4 Bobs yesterday afternoon.  The Bob wasn’t epic, but it was just our guys out and I have never seen that many waves in a session!  It was almost like a constant set that never stopped.  Almost the whole island was out and I don’t think anyone waited for more than a couple of minutes for a wave. I was just taking the scraps and I was exhausted after only an hour and had to go in.  It was a super fun last surf for our guests!

Our new guests are here now and we are watching a glowing red blob in the Indian Ocean with great fear and trembling!  Stay tuned

July 17^th

Bankvaults was smaller, but still plenty fun yesterday.  Conditions were good and everyone got some fun ones on their last day.  Pictures attached.  How good is the picture of the guy in the red rashguard?  That will be hanging on his wall!  Speaking of which, check out magicseaweed.com for a picture a guy took of our guest at Rifles the other day. Spectacular! It’s a water shot from behind the wave and the water is so clear it’s ridiculous.  Once in a lifetime shot!

Our new group arrived today and they got a quick Hideaways session in before it got dark. The waves were overhead and clean and the boys were stoked!  We are hoping this little swell can hang in there for a couple of days so everyone can get warmed up before a big swell shows up in a few days.  Fingers crossed!

July 14^th

We were kind of groveling for a few days at 4 Bobs and Burgerworld as some bad weather was hanging around, but right as a new swell arrived our winds went good for Bankvaults and it has been a tube fest ever since!  The winds have stayed nice for most of the last two days and we have logged in a lot of hours trying to get all of this swell as it will be the last one for this group.  Everyone is tired and sunburned, but we will be getting up early tomorrow and doing it again!

July 6th surf report.

As we could have predicted, a pretty average looking swell forecast ended up delivering a great day of surf!  We could see the waves building in size throughout the early morning.  Most of our guests choose to go to a spot that few other people surf.  (Green water waves.) They got what they wanted!  Nice sized waves with only a few other surfers in the water, and even they eventually got out, leaving it to just our crew.  The guys surfed for hours on end and came back only in time to eat a late lunch and get out for an afternoon 4 Bobs session.  Meanwhile, Rifles was as good as we have seen it for some time.  Set’s were going well overhead and conditions, after some early morning funk, were good all day. There were a few guys on it but plenty of waves to go around.  Pretty epic day of surf!

July 8^th Surf report

Our southeast swell faded quickly from Wednesdays peak, but the waves are still plenty fun.  We got some really good Nupusi yesterday afternoon as offshore winds came up just as our guys got there and it was actually barreling pretty good for Nipusi!  Good direction for it and the good winds set the stage. Our guys got some fun Hideaways as well with no one else out. We also have been surfing some fun, albeit smaller, Rifles and 4 Bobs.  Attached is a couple pictures of each spot.  Looks like this little southeast swell will continue to fade slowing though the next couple of days, but it will still be fun and there is something bigger on the horizon.

Hi All,

This mornings report comes in form Kandui Resort, Mentawais they’ve been real sticklers for getting info to us this season and honestly its brutal. Especially as I’m currently in the office, with 3 layers on and still feeling cold. There isn’t enough coffee in the world right now to wake me up and get me excited and the surf is dismal with cold water. The Kandui guys send these pictures through and there’s not a steamer in sight! Further more Ray (surf guide) says the waves are “average” then you see said “average” waves….? it’s enough to make you cry!!!

July 5th surf report.

Our latest guests just left.  Admittedly, this trip was pretty average.  It felt below average because there was a bombing swell that was on the forecast and we were imagining big, perfect waves, but it really didn’t happen.  We had fun waves, for sure.  Attached are pictures or Kandui’s, Rifles, 4 Bobs, Hideaways, Nipusi, Bankvaults, Ebay, and Beng Beng.  We also surfed Pistols, Last Resorts, Karambat Left, Aframes, and even Burgerworld!  But we didn’t get anything epic like last trip’s Kandui session.  (I’m sure I’m not getting much sympathy from anyone reading this from behind their desk!)  We did have epic parties on the Catamaran though!

We’re looking at a pretty average forecast ahead of us as well, unusual for this time of year, but you never know.  Our new guests will probably end up scoring big!  That seems to be the way it works out sometimes.  We’ll keep you posted!
