30th November & 1st December 2008

We arrived at P-Pass early on the 30th just to check to see if any swell had arrived. To our surprise there was 2 to 3 ft of fun waves and everyone spent a full day of surfing. Everyone retired early once we returned back at Pohnpei Surf Club. I was totally beat from surfing and the sun.

On the 1st December the whole camp was back out there again and we spend another full day out at P-Pass. Fun 2 to 3 ft waves with plenty of waves for everyone

28 & 29th November 2008

The swell has dropped off for the past two days which gave everybody an opportunity to check out some of Pohnpei’s attractions and activities. Basically for the past two days a lot of fishing has been happening. Not a great deal of catching but we had our moments. The local fishing tournament was on yesterday and Pohnpei Surf Club was the venue for the weigh in. I saw a variety of fish none more impressive than a 68 pound sailfish.

I did a trek up to the top of the mountain overlooking Kolonia which from the summit gave spectacular panoramic views of Pohnpei. You can clearly see Main Pass and P-Pass. This mountain had a more strategic purpose in WWII as there are a couple of anti aircraft guns positioned on the top of the mountain. Some of the other guests enjoyed a visit to the mystic ancient ruins or a dip at one of the many waterfalls located in Pohnpei. Allios and the guys at Pohnpei Surf Camp do a great job at organising other activities for all guests when huey doesn’t come to the party.

The swell is due for an increase by the 30th which we are looking forward to!

Caroline Islands Surf Diaries Day 3 & 4

Day 3:          26 November 2008

A group of us decided to take the late boat out to P-Pass which totally paid off. It was 2-3ft and pretty clean with the sun beaming down. We had P-Pass to ourselves for nearly 5 hours just the five of us. The water is so translucent when the sun is shinning. After our session we threw a few lines out on the way back to Pohnpei Surf Club no bites unfortunately. We cruised past Main Pass as well and we saw one hollow draining wave come through and got the whole boat hooting. Back at Pohnpei Surf Club Allios had a bunch of mud crabs ready for dinner. With my belly full and drained from the surf I was beat and retired really.

Day 4:          27 November 2008

A couple of the guys I have been hanging out with Brendon from Sydney and Ollie from Finland were heading home today so Allios organised a super early trip to P-Pass for them before they flew out. I hitched a ride and had another fun surf with 2ft clean waves coming through. Some bigger swell is supposed to arrive shortly which has got the whole camp buzzing. In the afternoon a couple of us decided to head out on a fishing trip. We had a couple of big hits and lost two lures. John was pulling up a decent sized tuna but by the time he pulled it in the head was the only part attached to the lure. Thanks to a mako shark. Still there was enough meat on a portion of the head and the ladies at the restaurant made a few dishes for us. A good constellation prize!

Day 1:          24 November 2008

I arrived at Pohnpei Surf Club around 1 in the afternoon, Allios the camp owner greeted all the arrivals and gave us a run down of the camp. I had a quick bite at the sushi rail and was straight onto the boat and out to the world class righthander “P-Pass”. Jumping with excitement I was in the line up within minutes after we anchored. It was a surreal feeling being at P-Pass. The surf was about 2 to 3 foot and only four guests out. My second wave was a session ending experience where I dug a fin into the reef and pulled a plug out.  Lucky the surf guide Issac has all the gear for repair jobs! Few!!

Day 2:            25 November 2008

I took the first boat out to P-Pass in the morning the surf was 2ft but still fun. After a 3 hour surf I decided to head back to Pohnpei Surf Club for the all you can eat sushi rail. Allios the camp owner took me out on the Pohnpei Surf Club Jet Ski  after lunch which was highlight of the trip so far. Allios zipped us through the mangroves to some remote areas few tourists would get to. We later headed out to P-Pass to meet up with one of the guests for a late arvo session followed by a few cold beers! Another perfect day is paradise!

Historical Surf Images

One thing is for sure during early season. Phonpei gets the least winds and get to surf the East, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and possibly even the outer atolls. Not only do the conditions get really clean during early season, the winds also shift from trade winds (NE) to Southwest, bringing the east side alive. Early season swells can come from typhoons to the West, from North Pacific lows off Japan or trade winds swells from the East.

Take a look at a few images of October, November & December from the 2007 season. Phonpei Surf Club has availability for surfers in both October, November and December 2008. Please contact our friendly travel consultants toll free on 1800 611 163 or info@worldsurfaris.com to book your spot to the best surf trip of your life!

Kids hit the surf at Nahlap - Pohnpei Surf Club Day

In most places around the world, surfing lessons take place on a beach, with long soft rolling waves, onto a white sandy beach.  Not in Pohnpei, but that was not an obstacle for the kids who attended the Pohnpei Surf Club Surf Day for Kids at Nahlap Island Resort on 30th of August.

All kids had an introduction to surfboards on flat water learning how to paddle, sit on the surfboards, they got towed around on top of some fun water toys and when the tide got high enough to cover the reef all kids hit the surf!

Around 30 kids had no problem with the absence of the white sandy beach or dealing with the shallow and sharp reef on the inside where the waves were breaking.

All had fun and some potential champions were spotted.

The Pohnpei Surf Club would like to give thanks to all participants who came along, the volunteers who helped and Nahlap Island Resort for providing us with the location for the event.

Early season Pohnpei!!!

The best right-hander in the world !Everything is looking good for this up-coming season at the Pohnpei Surf Club (PSC, Caroline ISlands).
One of the main early seasons characteristics in Pohnpei is the lack of winds. Talk about clean conditions.
During this time of the year, August until late November/mid December the winds in Pohnpei die down. Absolutely glassy conditions, light winds and the SW wind days which bring alive all the NE, E and SE sides.
Based on our experience we are looking forward to a good early season. Our last two early seasons were not as good as the two previous ones so we are due for a good one. As winds go, they are already dead!
Late July I took a flight to Guam, just over 1.000 miles from Pohnpei. It was a beautiful day. The ocean was so glassy that you could see the reflection of the clouds from all the way from up there. Not one white cap for one thousand miles.
When we think we have seen it all, we found another 7 passes and really nice bends on the reef never surfed before.
There is a stretch of coast we just did not bother to much with, one for being past where we usually surf and because it was to far to just check the surf. There is no where you can go by land to have a look and it would take more then one hour boat ride just to check it. Well, things have changed.
The Pohnpei Surf Club has just got a brand new top of the line Honda Jet Ski and when it come to check the surf you can’t beat the speed of a ski. As the boats are heading towards the first spots, the ski will be checking the other ones when conditions require.
All these new found passes and reefs work from around now to mid/late November. During peak season trade winds completely blow out all that side of the island. This is one of the most pristine, untouched, unfished and unsurfed areas in Pohnpei.
The other good news are we have got a new and bigger boat. It is a 34 foot Yamaha Boat with a 130 HP four stroke Honda motor, stereo and lots of shade. Our fleet has now 5 boats. Two 26 ft, one 27 ft, one 30 ft and one 34 ft long boats. We sure don’t use all of them on the same day but you can be sure you won’t run out of boats in case one breaks, or in case we need to rescue a broken boat.
One other new good addition the the Pohnpei Surf Club is a quiver of surfboards for guests to use and four brand new Naish Stand Up Paddle Boards ranging from 10′4 to 11′6 ( http://www.naishsurfing.com/en/products/stand-up.html ). If the surf gets flat you can go explore the area and some beautiful reefs, or try to catch a few waves around PSC area like at the light house. Don’t worry. We won’t be crashing a prefect line up with a bunch of these but you sure are to have fun with one of them.
The fish has been biting. With these glassy conditions you can go full speed to places we usually don’t because of the choppy conditions. Lot’s of GT’s, red snappers and the occasional maori rass! We just got two on the 30 to 50 lb side.
Surfing, fishing, diving, kiting, paddling, the stand up paddle boards and the jet ski. There is no better way to enjoy Pohnpei.
