30th November & 1st December 2008

We arrived at P-Pass early on the 30th just to check to see if any swell had arrived. To our surprise there was 2 to 3 ft of fun waves and everyone spent a full day of surfing. Everyone retired early once we returned back at Pohnpei Surf Club. I was totally beat from surfing and the sun.

On the 1st December the whole camp was back out there again and we spend another full day out at P-Pass. Fun 2 to 3 ft waves with plenty of waves for everyone

28 & 29th November 2008

The swell has dropped off for the past two days which gave everybody an opportunity to check out some of Pohnpei’s attractions and activities. Basically for the past two days a lot of fishing has been happening. Not a great deal of catching but we had our moments. The local fishing tournament was on yesterday and Pohnpei Surf Club was the venue for the weigh in. I saw a variety of fish none more impressive than a 68 pound sailfish.

I did a trek up to the top of the mountain overlooking Kolonia which from the summit gave spectacular panoramic views of Pohnpei. You can clearly see Main Pass and P-Pass. This mountain had a more strategic purpose in WWII as there are a couple of anti aircraft guns positioned on the top of the mountain. Some of the other guests enjoyed a visit to the mystic ancient ruins or a dip at one of the many waterfalls located in Pohnpei. Allios and the guys at Pohnpei Surf Camp do a great job at organising other activities for all guests when huey doesn’t come to the party.

The swell is due for an increase by the 30th which we are looking forward to!

Day 3:          26 November 2008

A group of us decided to take the late boat out to P-Pass which totally paid off. It was 2-3ft and pretty clean with the sun beaming down. We had P-Pass to ourselves for nearly 5 hours just the five of us. The water is so translucent when the sun is shinning. After our session we threw a few lines out on the way back to Pohnpei Surf Club no bites unfortunately. We cruised past Main Pass as well and we saw one hollow draining wave come through and got the whole boat hooting. Back at Pohnpei Surf Club Allios had a bunch of mud crabs ready for dinner. With my belly full and drained from the surf I was beat and retired really.

Day 4:          27 November 2008

A couple of the guys I have been hanging out with Brendon from Sydney and Ollie from Finland were heading home today so Allios organised a super early trip to P-Pass for them before they flew out. I hitched a ride and had another fun surf with 2ft clean waves coming through. Some bigger swell is supposed to arrive shortly which has got the whole camp buzzing. In the afternoon a couple of us decided to head out on a fishing trip. We had a couple of big hits and lost two lures. John was pulling up a decent sized tuna but by the time he pulled it in the head was the only part attached to the lure. Thanks to a mako shark. Still there was enough meat on a portion of the head and the ladies at the restaurant made a few dishes for us. A good constellation prize!

Day 1:          24 November 2008

I arrived at Pohnpei Surf Club around 1 in the afternoon, Allios the camp owner greeted all the arrivals and gave us a run down of the camp. I had a quick bite at the sushi rail and was straight onto the boat and out to the world class righthander “P-Pass”. Jumping with excitement I was in the line up within minutes after we anchored. It was a surreal feeling being at P-Pass. The surf was about 2 to 3 foot and only four guests out. My second wave was a session ending experience where I dug a fin into the reef and pulled a plug out.  Lucky the surf guide Issac has all the gear for repair jobs! Few!!

Day 2:            25 November 2008

I took the first boat out to P-Pass in the morning the surf was 2ft but still fun. After a 3 hour surf I decided to head back to Pohnpei Surf Club for the all you can eat sushi rail. Allios the camp owner took me out on the Pohnpei Surf Club Jet Ski  after lunch which was highlight of the trip so far. Allios zipped us through the mangroves to some remote areas few tourists would get to. We later headed out to P-Pass to meet up with one of the guests for a late arvo session followed by a few cold beers! Another perfect day is paradise!

Surf and fishing report - from Shaun @ NIR

Late pre season - had nice small crisp swells yielding fun workable waves to ease into season.  Ral was reliable, a few good sessions on Nago Left - ( long walls and not a drop out of place).  Pikinini also offered a few fast breaking sessions, and Nusa Left also delivered some trademark form - average size 2-4 foot, occasional 5 foot.

1st Nov Onwards -
An unproductive start to official season - simply a complete lack of swell and generally speaking, a little uninspiring with the only waves on offer being at Ral Island. Fortunately, the fishing was firing and to quote one of the boys and his infinite wisdom, there’s plenty of waves on the coast but the fishing doesn’t have a patch on here.
Their tally was good, more than a few sailfish, a swag of mackerel and many in the 22-25kg range, jobfish, range of trevally barracuda.  The lads did the right thing and released secondary fish - to fight another day.  Award to Jethro for falling out of the boat when trying to avoid the snappy head of a 25kg mackerel gaffed into the boat.

Last few days have offered clean fun waves at Ral - 2-4 foot - more promising than the last 10 days - apologies to Jimmy and the Lads - next time fellas.

Outlook - next few days looking much the same but with slight improvement so hopefully some of the other reefs will start working.  Slight rise in swell & an improving period - direction is OK.  No big systems to suggest anything epic in terms of solid groundswell but there will be small to medium waves with clean faces.

Today. another postcard day in paradise & nice 2-4 foot waves @ Ral - for a handful of surfers.

Lukim you sampela taim.

World Surfaris 2008 Male Atolls surf review

Written by Richard Kotch the World Surfaris Hudhuranfushi Resort expert surf guide.

May: Was OK, had some good days with light crowds though many days were kinda marginal; had there been more guests or more demanding guests it would have been tricky. Winds were ever changing but generally it was fun conditions most days..

June: First week was not great surf-wise. unfortunately, that was when the ASL crew was there and they got a little skunked (though they did show how much fun even little onshore waves could be). Then the ‘QS started and the swell kicked in just in time - 4-6ft and perfect for 10 days.We scored. The pro’s were cool to surf with and most of them stayed at the comp site or just surfed Sultans. The wind was perfect for the rights - we surfed epic Cokes day after day by ourselves or just one other boat and everyone was kinda relieved when the swell dropped for a day or two and gave us a brief respite before another week of perfection.

July/August: Consistently bigger and thicker, the swells had more power though crowds were kinda heavy, however swells were so consistent …So many good days it’s a blur; guys were getting the waves of their lives. The bigger, better swells were always the least crowded…. some epic days at Lohi’s … Jails like warm water J Bay and big barrels up at Cokes…

So many Manta rays in the line up and the ever present Dolphins…

September/October: Magic - light or no wind; super consistent and towards the end, very light crowds. Dreamlike sessions with super cool guests. Light winds and S/SE swell enabling us to surf all the spots… Some amazing sessions at Chickens with just one other boat… my favorite months to be in the Maldives for sure…

Once again another fine and sunny week went down in Samoa. Combine this with a few days of no wind and it wasn’t too bad on the surf front either.

Monday. High tide 1:34pm  The boat trip to Pebbles was rewarded by overhead barrels and strong offshore winds. With the wind holding the waves up it was a perfect opportunity to take off really deep for maximum tube time. Some really nice barrels were made as well as the odd wackable section thrown up.

Tuesday. High tide 1:55pm   Despite similar conditions to yesterday our surfers chose to have a family day around the resort so no surfing today.

Wednesday. High tide 3:26pm   Wakas for the first time in a little while was the focus of the boat trip today.  At around head high with a light SE wind it had some nice sections but was a little messy.

Thursday. High tide 3:45am and 4:12pm   The pre dawn surf out the front @ Resorts saw some clean little peaks on offer. Unfortunately a strong ESE wind built up during the day stuffing any chance of an arvo boat trip.  A few of the crew went down to check out Village Lefts which was about head high in the cross shore conditions, not perfect but very surfable

Friday. High tide 4:31am and 4:54pm   A super early pre dawn boat trip to Y-Tops was the call for today. Upon arrival the crew were greeted with glassy head high surf. It was fairly peaky and the barrels were caving in on themselves rather quickly so they took the opportunity to smash out a few turns before checking out the beautiful snorkeling in the cove as the tide dropped out.

Saturday. High tide 5:15am and 5:33pm   Both the morning and arvo surfs were enjoyed out front out @ Resorts today. Both lefts and rights were on offer and the occasional peak was split in the head high conditions in which we all got our fair share of waves.

Sunday. High tide 5:56am and 6:12pm   Special K was the focus for the morning boat trip which saw some small yet perfect waves pushing down the reef. With shoulder to head high rights on offer the crew made the most of the small stuff with grommet Thomas in fine form with the smaller surf suiting him down to the ground.
