Where
Ha'atafu Beach Resort is located on the main island of Tongatapu 21km west of the capital Nuku'alofa on the Hihifo Peninsula. Ha'atafu Beach is not only home to some of Tonga's best surfing waves, it is also Tongatapu's premier recreational swimming and snorkelling beach. Ha'atafu Beach features safe all-tides swimming within the expansive lagoon area which also provides sanctuary to an astounding variety of tropical fish and corals. A true snorkellers wonderland. The coastline here faces west-northwest making the prevailing East-Southeast tradewinds directly offshore and is open to groundswells from winter storm activity in both hemispheres. This makes Ha'atafu unique in being one of the few surfing locations in the South Pacific to enjoy world class surfing conditions year round. Accommodation Ha'atafu Beach Resort offers 10 traditionally thatched roof fales (bungalows) set amoungst landscaped tropical gardens right on the beach. All fales are simply and tastefully furnished with all linens, towels, and mosquito nets supplied. Guests share a centrally located ammenities block with solar showers also available. All fales are cleaned and serviced daily by Ha’atafu’s friendly staff with child minding and laundry services also available on request. MealsFood is one of the highlights of the Resort with regular supplies of fresh fish guaranteed by Resort boats. Packages include full breakfast and buffet dinner. Breakfast features fresh fruit salad, choice of cereals and hot meals of eggs (fried, scrambed, poached), and your choice of savoury omelettes, pancakes or French toast. Our nightly buffet dinner offers 2 main courses (one fresh fish dish each evening) served with gourmet potato or rice dishes, fresh garden salads and garlic bread. Activities
There are plenty more activities available at Ha'atafu Beach Resort which will keep you occupied. The following is a small list:
Sports fishing
Tonga is home to some of the worlds' best sportsfishing with all major species of tropical pelagics well represented. The "fathomless depths" directly offshore from Ha'atafu Beach Resort means you can be in the thick of the action within minutes of your fishing trip. Your chance to hook-up with a marlin, sailfish, mahimahi, wahoo or any of the varieties of dogtooth, yellowfin or skipjack tuna. The resort has two 23ft fibreglass runabouts available for both offshore "blue water" and inshore "spincasting" sportsfishing trips. Guests are encouraged to bring their own fishing gear with an emphasis on "heavy tackle", lots of spare lures and a strong back!
Snorkelling
The resort borders the Ha'atafu Beach Marine Reserve which is Tongatapu's only marine reserve accessible by road. The lagoon area encompassing the reserve is home to over 130 different species of tropical fish and the varieties of both soft and hard corals are outstanding. The lagoon averages a depth of 6-8ft at high tide and 3-4ft at low tide. Snorkelling outside of the lagoon, beyond the reef, is possible when the surf is small and opens up another realm of deep caverns, drop-offs and a wider variety of "open ocean" marine life. Snorkelling inside the lagoon is perfect for beginners and children but only strong swimmers or more experienced snorkellers should venture beyond the reef. While some snorkelling gear is available for resort guests we suggest that keen snorkellers bring their own equipment.
Whale Watching (July - November)
Winter and spring months bring an annual migration of Humpback whales to sojourn in the warm tropical waters of the Tonga archipelago. The deep leeward waters directly offshore from Ha'atafu offers perfect surface conditions for the whales to bask in the sun and frollic with their young. Guests have a perfect view from the resort of these spectacular displays and can also readily snorkel beyond the reef and swim with the whales. A truly unforgettable experience.
Sea Kayaks
Ha’atafu Beach Resort offer both single and double sea kayaks for hire to resort guests. The lagoon area is perfect for enjoying a leisurely paddle with friends or family. However we recommend, for safety, that children have parental supervision at all times, as strong currents sometimes develop around the reef passes during larger swells.
Other activies also include:
Beach Volleyball
Table TennisIsland

Daily courtesy shuttle to Town

Surf
Tonga enjoys world class surfing year round with 2 very distinct seasons. The Summer North Swell (November to March)North Pacific winter swells (the same that hit Hawaii) as well as South Pacific tropical cyclones produce consistent swells during these months. There are 4 rights and 1 left at Ha'atafu as well as a chain of off-shore reefs which fire during this period. "E.T.'s", "Loonies", "Sharkies", Lighthouse", Pass Right", and "Razors" are just a few of the smorgasbord of surf-spots to choose from. Some can be mindlessly perfect. East to South East trade winds prevail during the summer months but winds can be variable during passing storms (cyclone season). However, with such a selection of off-shore locations there is almost always one of the breaks offering clean, off-shore conditions. Resort boats are used to access off-shore surf spots. The Winter South Swell Season (April to October)Winter lows in the Tasman Sea and around New Zealand as well as Antarctic lows generate strong, clean groundswells which sweep the Ha'atafu coast turning on 5 excellent lefts - "The Pass", "Motels", "Corners", "The Bowl" and "Fishtraps". South East tradewinds are directly off-shore at Ha'atafu and predominate during winter, brushing these waves to perfection. All surfspots are either directly in front of the Resort or within a short walking distance and 100 metre paddle across the lagoon.

No Beachbreaks in Tonga
All surf spots break over coral reefs, some are dangerously shallow, and for this reason we recommend that visiting surfers possess intermediate to advanced skill levels. There are reforms inside the lagoon which are ideal for supervised children or beginners.
