The new frontier as New Ireland is often referred as has an array of thrilling waves for every surfers taste. From thick pits to mellow waves perfect for long boarders, New Ireland has it all.
Mix in a bit of sun, great food and PNG culture you won’t want to leave.
‘Tiki Tu’ owners and hosts, Adam and Danielle Smith, have over 10 years experience in the region and Adam the skipper / surf guide will have you in the best conditions daily. Dani and Adam do their best to cater all passengers including island hopping, cultural village visits to exploring river systems, to fishing, snorkelling, hiking and of-course surfing the best waves on offer in the region.
Typical Surf Charter to Lavongai:
Day 1: Jump on board, get acquainted, and get moving. No point hanging about in port when there are remote and uncrowded waves out there. The sail to the North Lavongai area can take anywhere from 3-6 hours depending on conditions, but there are a few breaks along the way to check, so we can always break up the trip with a surf if you’re up for what’s on offer. There is also plenty of fish in the sea, and we always have a line or two trawling out the back whilst we’re underway. The trip takes us through many passes, and within the sheltered waters of the outlying islands, and by the end of the passage we’ll be in a place with enough breaks for you to have one each for yourselves, so often it’s a good idea to just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.
Day 2-5: Waves dictate where we go, but your days will pretty much consist of early morning surf, back to the boat for brekky, mid-morning surf, back to the boat for a bit of banter with the kids from the neighbouring islands, perhaps a snorkel or a fishing trip, a meander up a river or into a community, back to the boat for lunch, out for an afternoon surf, chill out, perhaps a late session if your still up for it, sundowners on the yacht, dinner, chatter, sleeping under the stars…..and so the days go by.
Day 6: On the final day, we generally spend the morning trying to find you all, as you’re hiding and don’t want to leave. But a morning surf is usually on the cards, before the trip back to Kavieng.
Tiki Tu is a 10 metre performance cruising catamaran. She is light, allowing for excellent performance in light airs. She is spacious, with 56 sq metres of deck space, including a large forward trampoline to soak up the sun. The awning which covers the whole back deck offers great shade from the sun and keeps you dry during the tropical rains whilst at anchor.
Tiki Tu is not a ‘luxury’ catamaran, but she offers comfortable accommodation for the adventurous traveller of all ages who are seeking a personalised small group voyage through paradise.

Village visits
The further you travel away from the main provincial town of Kavieng, the more you can experience the intrigue of traditional village life, left virtually unchanged for hundreds of years.

Snorkelling
Take a peek under the water, and be amazed by the sheer number of fish and colour of the coral. The reefs around Kavieng offer some of the most diverse diving on earth; however you don’t need to have your dive ticket to be able to experience it here. Every island has fringing reefs offering the chance to snorkel at a different location everyday, right off the yacht. Masks and Snorkels are available free for use whilst on charter.
River trips
The rivers of Lavongai (New Hanover) are awesome to take a trip in the dinghy, with overhanging trees and picturesque villages.
Fishing
The islands abound in fish species just waiting for you to catch them. We trawl from the stern whilst sailing, and mainly catch pelagic (surface dwelling) species such as Mackerel, Tuna and Giant Trevally. There are many reefs which we sail over at around 5-10 metres deep, where we also catch a huge variety of reef fish
