SOUTH SUMATRA SURFPOINTS

UJUNG BOCUR
Located directly in front of the Ombak Indah Losmen. The most consistent wave in the area, a long left reef break with rides of up to 300m. A great all-round wave and get's hollow on certain conditions. The reef is not too dangerous, best at 4-8 ft and handles 10ft on the right swell direction. Trade winds blow offshore and surfable on all tides.

WAY JAMBU
Sumatran Pipeline, located 15 minutes south of the losmen. The best kept secret in Indonesia! Handles any size, big heavy barrels, hollow tubing lefts made up of four heavy connecting sections. A shallow reef, out of deep water. A heavy and challenging wave that needs medium to high tide to work and a nice straight swell.

BALI VILLAGE
A short hollow right reef, best at four foot. (20 minutes south of the losmen)

TOWN LEFT
Excellent back door left that is good with size but inconsistent when small. Best in May, June and July.

TOWN RIGHT
A fast, fun right hand reef break that breaks on the similar conditions as the left.

JENNY'S RIGHT
A great right hand reef, needs medium to high tide 11/2 hours north of the losmen. Doesn't like the trades, so early mornings or off-season best.

JIMMY’S RIGHT
A fast hollow barrelling right, experts only.

JIMMY’S LEFT
Just north of right, hollow and heavy.

BANANA ISLAND
Located 1/2 hour by boat from town, has sketchy right’s and left’s. Great fishing, snorkelling and sight seeing.

MANDIRI
Great beach break that picks up lots of swell.

There are other waves around, a great location for exploring

Resort Latitude Zero - Telo Islands - Sumatra

The Telo islands boast a variety of waves which are suitable for all levels of surfing. From ‘beginners’, cruisy, older long boarders’, ‘stand up paddle boarders’, ‘advanced short board surfers’ and even professionals love the area.

The islands span over a 50 nautical mile area from north to south right on the equator with many little nooks and crannies to search and surf. Over the past 15 years the owners have been doing just that and every season they find something new. To date they have surfed over 40 quality waves in the area, all of which are accessible by fast speedboat.

The waves are consistently 3 to 5 foot, which increase in size when those larger swells march up the Indian Ocean from an area 3000nm away known as the roaring forties. We have both, quality lefts and rights – though what makes this area a bit different and uncharacteristic for Indonesia as a whole, is there are probably more rights then lefts.

There are quite a few less intense, deep water waves that suit the long boarders, SUP’s and the surfers not into risking life and limb for the barrels.  With also plenty of shallower, across the reef- style barrelling waves that are nothing less then world class setups.

Resort Lat Zero has access to dozens of waves from 5 mins to up to 45mins away from the resort, the Telos offer a wave set up for every type of surfer from mellow long board type waves to something more challenging. In the interest of keeping the breaks uncrowded and incognito RLZ has asked that we don't publish too much info. Suffice to say that we up to 30 different breaks that work on different conditions and suited to different abilities YOU won't be dissapointed. RLZ also share the below wave locations with Telo Island Lodge, please note that Telo Island Lodge and Resort Latitude Zero are in constant radio contact with each other and organise it so that you rarely see guests from either destination surfing the same break and its never crowded.

Over the years we have surfed the many breaks of this area and during the ‘06 season have explored and researched other locations in the area and made a few other secret discoveries of our own.

There are many different breaks within an hour’s drive of the lodge and 70% of them are within 20 mins. THE SURF HERE IS ULTRA CONSISTENT in the 3-5-foot range, lefts and rights that work in all tides and opposite wind directions virtually guaranteeing offshores every day.The ones you will see on this page are just a sample of the places we regularly surfed in 2006. The waves vary but the closest to the lodge are:

Max’s Left/Churches/Mishos

A long, bowling left that will throw up a tube in two separate sections perfect for the intermediate to advanced surfer. Located directly behind the lodge.

Max’s Right

A fun, bowling right that offers everything from hittable walls to tube rides. Less than 100 metres from the lodge, the right is our home break.

GT’s
A super-fun, super tubular, right about 20 minutes from the lodge. Named after Aussie legend Grant Thomas who holds the Telo Island lodge bintang record.

Schoolyards

Made up of three separate waves all of which work on different swell directions, the “yard” is about 10 minutes from the lodge. All these waves are rights.

Pinnacles

A super-fun right about five minutes from the lodge. Pinnacles is a great longboard wave and also has a great air section in its end bowl. This wave is set in one of the prettiest backdrops in the region.

Le Ba

Another pretty right that runs along the edge of a nearby island. Suits beginners to intermediate surfers. 10 minutes from the lodge.

The Bubble

Suited to advanced-level surfers, the Bubble is a super-sucky right that does a 180-degree wrap. Ten minutes from the lodge.

The E.R.

Made up of two separate reef passes, the E.R. features two lefts and three rights. Best on a very light to medium swell, the E.R. has a wave suited to all levels of experience. Fifteen minutes from the lodge.

Wegs

An amazing coral point suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, nothing but high-speed tubes. Thirty-Five minutes from the lodge.

Zippers

A super-fast left suited to experienced surfers, Zippers is a racing tube over a shallow reef 15 minutes from the lodge.

Dislocators

A shallow, tubing left suited to intermediate to advanced surfers, 28 minutes from the lodge.

Togat Nusa Retreat - Mentawais

over 4

Level Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec

Overview -  The Mentawai Islands are world renowned by surfers, not only for the quality of waves on offer here, but also for its consistency as a surf zone.

Surferable year round, it is the southern hemisphere winter, from April through to October that sees the peak of the season, as storm activity in the southern Indian Ocean pushes swell after swell up towards the Island chain.

Situated on Pitojat Island, off the northern end of Sipora Island, guests to Togat Nusa Retreat have access to a number of quality breaks, all within a short boat ride of the Island...

We have compiled a brief glimpse of five well-known surf spots near Togat Nusa Retreat with many more secrets around us!

Iceland- Rarely a day goes by when there isn't some form of surfeable wave at this swell magnet An average day at icelands will see a steepish takeoff, followed by a shorter ride with opportunity for a couple of turns and the occasional barrel.

However, it is once a big W-SW swell hits that Icelands truly starts to show itself, transforming from a small swell go to spot into somewhat of a beast. A powerful left, the takeoff is steep, as the wave jacks quickly out of deep water throwing out a heaving barrel, for anyone who has what it takes..... (maybe a bigger board?) to paddle over the lip and into it!

Scarecrows- Your New Frontyard - A long lefthander wraps around the front of the Island for rides of up to 200 yards. Picking up most available swell and surfeable on any tide, and at any size, Scarecrows is one of the most consistent breaks in the Mentawais. A wave of many moods depending on swell size and direction, the length of the wave ensures a little of everything is on offer. On a good day out front a surfer will find, open faces perfect for carving, long racing walls and multiple barrel sections...sometimes all on the one wave! A fun wave, suitable to surfers of all abilities and skill levels. The reef here is deep by Mentawai standards, though the inside "Curry Bowl" section can get shallow and challenging at low tide, rewarding those who commit with a more intense barrel!

Telescopes - When its on this long lefthander would have to rank up there with as fun of a wave to be found anywhere.

Requiring a more specific swell direction, Teles is not as consistent as some of our other spots but, once the swell direction is good and lines start wrapping around into the bay at Mapadegat, it really is a sight to be seen. Long rides of over 200 meters are possible, as predictable section after section offer ample opportunities to whack, hack and pull in! Considering the quality of wave, Teles is quite forgiving, the reef here is relatively deep, though the wave should definitely not be taken too lightly. Big swells see large sets breaking further up the reef as barrels reel quickly down the line and into the regular takeoff zone, slowing down briefly before walling up and concentrating again on the inside tube section.

Suicides-  A right hander which breaks over a shallow and very live reef, Suicides is best surfed on a high tide. Those who aren't lured too far up the reef by an enticing, yet unmakeable section, can negotiate a steep takeoff straight into a barrel before coming through to the next section and chance for a couple of turns as the wave fattens out into the channel.

Seven Palms- Good option for some fun on small days Only a short ride from Togat Nusa, Seven Palms peels off along the reef in front of a scenic limestone coved beach. The wave tends to close out when the swell gets too big so is generally saved for a bit of a change on those smaller days. It is a fun, rippable wave capable of throwing out the odd barrel. Suitable to surfers of any skill level, those looking for more of a challenge can push themselves further up the reef to a sometimes makable faster barrel section.

Rikas Rights - a fun ledgy hollow right hander that races down a shallow reef, hollow but user friendly. Shallow but not to heavy with plenty of opurtunitys to get barreled as it peels and wraps around into deeper water. When it gets too big theres a few more fun waves in the bay a few hundred meters away that you can also paddle too

Ariks Right - Breaks in a west swell when its big, and is an easy, good wave from 3-8 feet that can also barrel.
