Indonesia - G-Land

G-land - Jungle Surf Camp

Jungle Surf Camp

Located at Plengkung Bay on the southernmost peninsula of Java is the legendary Grajagan. G-Land, as it is otherwise known, was discovered in the 70s by a couple of intrepid surfers on a flight between Jakarta and Bali. The long lines were unmistakable perfection and the discovery that followed is now regarded as arguably the world's best left-hander.

About G-land - Jungle Surf Camp

G-Land is a Mecca for travelling surfers and surf-hungry adventurers from all over the world flock to the Javanese jungle each year between March and November to sample G-Land's jewels. During these months the swell is generally constant and flat spells are rare which makes G-Land one of the world's most consistent breaks.

Travelling to G-Land is easy. The minibus driver will pick you up from your hotel in Bali just after midnight. From there it is an overnight drive to Gilimanuk and a car ferry to Grajagan. Next is a 45 minute speedboat ride, arriving at Jungle Beach Village in the early morning for breakfast. Return transfers from Bali are included in the package price.

Jungle Surf Camp has been constructed in the jungle, just off the beach and directly in front of the famous section of reef known as Speedies.

A surf guide's perspective (by Dave Scard)

More than just a name or a place, G-Land is a haven. So close but yet so far from Bali, G-Land is a magnet for swell and is definitely not overrated. The set up in G-Land is simple and the relaxed atmosphere and pumping waves make for an experience like no other surf trip. Once you arrive at this all-inclusive camp you don't have to worry about a thing. The biggest decision of the day is choosing what board to ride and your camp surf guide can even help with that.

This is how an average trip to G-Land goes: You are picked up from the airport or your hotel and taken to Tubes Bar in Kuta to collect the beer and soft drink vouchers that you will use in the camp. You will then depart between 11pm and 2am, depending on the tides. Travel overnight in a comfortable G-Land bemo and arrive at Grajagan rivermouth on the rising tide to catch the G-Land boat to the camp. After a 40 minute boat ride you will be greeted on the beach by the camp surf guide (usually Australian). He will guide you through the jungle to the main restaurant area and you will have an all-you-can-eat breakfast with fresh juices, tea and coffee. During breakfast the guide will explain how everything in the camp works and answer all your questions before taking you to your room.

You can then surf to your heart’s content! Lunch is provided plus a buffet dinner every night - something the camp is famous for! G-Land is also famous for the "Bintang sunsets", a daily ritual for some. It’s the best time of day – what can be better than being surfed out, watching the sunset and drinking a cold Bintang? Life doesn’t get much better than that!

The main sections of G-land are Kongs, Moneytrees, Launching Pads, Speedies, Quiksilvers, Chickens, 20-20s and Tiger Tracks. All of these waves have their own characteristics and work on different swell direction, tides and swell sizes. There are waves for all levels of surfers, however most of the sections require an advanced level of surfing.

G-Land Jungle Surf Camp has newly-built cottage-style rooms, all very comfortable and with private bathrooms. All rooms have twin beds with mosquito nets and Balinese furniture. The accommodation in G-Land has come a long way since the early days and is now even suitable for adventureous non-surfing girlfriends!
