Lakey Peak Sumbawa
| over 4 | ||||||||||||
| Level | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
This region of Sumbawa can get surf all year round. The peak swell period is from April to September.
Late and early seasons, October to March, can offer perfect clean conditions with light winds. There are five world-class surfing waves situated in the same bay directly in front of Aman Gati Hotel.
The main wave, The Peak, has a left and a right-hand take off.
Lakey Peak An intense hollow right and left-hand peak, with the left generally being longer, the right can fire on the proper swell direction. A frame with a guaranteed backdoor for those with the balls to pull in. Best at 5-8 foot that holds all sizes and goes off at mid-tides and the left can provide some deep barrels to surfed at low tides if the swell is big enough.
Lakey Pipe Lakey Pipe is on either side of The Peak, a popular wave amongst bodyboarders, and No Mans is suitable for the more extreme surfer.
The Beachy Only breaks in the lagoon with the big swells and is more suitable for the less experienced surfer.
Lakey Left Across the channel from the peak. With right size swell and direction this normally sectiony wave can line up and provide deep, lined-up barrels.
Lakey Right A few hundred metres down the beach. A short, bowling right-hander that breaks into a deepwater dent in the reef. Some fun barrels. Holds only to about 8 ft.
Periscopes A fun right-hander wave at the eastern end of a long reef that sticks way out into the bay, Periscopes can offer a high, tight barrel over a relatively safe reef platform and a clean exit into a channel. A short paddle out. Better at high tides with glassy or north (offshore) winds. Blown out by dry season trades. Holds only to about 8 ft. About a mile walk up the beach from the surf camp.
Nungas The big left across from Periscopes. Under 8 ft, the wave breaks down into several sections of 50 metre or so, one or all may be surfable. But at 8 ft the sections start to connect, offering rides of 200 metres or more with flat spots, hot dog walls and full-on barrels all thrown into one ride. Best take-off spot is determined on an hourly basis. Can handle a crowd and swells as big as they come.
Cobblestones Another popular wave within walking distance of the resort.

MARCH - NOVEMBER
DECEMBER - FEBRUARY - a bit wet but still some good waves and uncrowded surf sessions to be had.

MAWI
Requires at least 2-3 feet to work There are 2 breaks - a long slow left and a very fast hollow right-hander. Both can be easily affected by wind and is best surfed at Mid-tide…Transport: Around 30minutes from Kuta Beach…
TANJUNG AAN A left on the west side of the bay, can be O.K. at 3 ft and up, this wave shifts around a lot.
Transport: 20 minutes walk around the beach from Kuta Indah or 5 minutes from Novotel.
SIGAR Best in a small swell 1-3foot. A shorter right peak, which can sometimes barrel, although is easily affected by wind. Best at Midtide.
Transport: 10 minutes drive or a 25-minute walk
DESERT POINT This wave is also known as Bangko-Bangko, it has established itself as a top surfing point. It is a full day out as it takes around 2/2.5 hrs to travel to…This Left - Hander has a fast inside section, with a shifty take-off area, it barrels and walls along the reef, a long ride…. Best on Mid-tides.
GRUPUK - Has 4 breaks (2 left and 2 right) Smaller left on the inside east shore, larger left on the outside east shore with shifts around.A fun right on the western shore which is the best on bigger swell, with a steep take off section that tapers out to a full shoulder. The inside section further inshore is a fun right-hander also. All have fair wind protection and is best from 3 foot and up, but can be surfed when it is smaller, the most consistent destination as it peaks up the swell easily.Transport: 25 minutes drive and then a 10-minute boat ride.
EKA"s BAY - (approx 1 hour drive from Kuta Lombok area) 2 breaks Eka"s (Left) outside works on a swell of 3-5foot with a nice barrel. Eka"s inside has a nice easy peak and also needs around 2 -3 foot to work. It is a fun wave (good for beginners). NB. HEAVEN ON THE PLANET IS LOCATED IN EKAS BAY.
Nusa Lembongan Packages

Shipwrecks Picks up all the swell. Range 1-8 feet. This dynamic wave is well known for its fast workable walls and nice barrel section.
Playgrounds Requires a three feet wave to break properly. Two breaks with both left and right hand peaks. Has good protection from the wind. Location is perfection with pristine beaches and natural scenery.
Lacerations Requires a two feet wave to be surfable. Best at 4-6 feet. Two breaks - a hollow shifty left, best at mid to high tide and a hollow right with a fast inside section, best at low to midtide. Has reasonable protection from the wind.
Montags Located on the northern side of Lacerations and is a fast launching right-hander when it is working (only works on big swells)
Cenigans This is located on Ceningan Island just next to Nusa Lembongan. When there is no swell at Nusa Lembongan head around here for a fun wave. Best at 2-4 feet.
Scar Reef Surf Camp
| over 3 | ||||||||||||
| Level | Jan | Feb | Mar | Apr | May | Jun | Jul | Aug | Sep | Oct | Nov | Dec |
Surf Season: February until November
Scar Reef Right out the front of the hotel is Scar Reef, a long, hollow, left-hand wave which is best at lower tides. Either side of low tide will cause this wave to break further down the line towards the headland. Higher tides bring the wave closer to the inside and cause it to section, although it is still very much worth surfing. Scar Reef picks up plenty of swell depending on swell direction. This wave has a lot of power so be prepared for hold downs if you go over the falls.
Inside Scars or Little Bingin Located more in the middle of the bay, this wave is fun for all standards of surfers (except beginners) and is a left and right hander that works best on mid and high tides. The right-hander sometimes peters out but when it’s over three feet it’s a fast wally wave that also barrels. The left-hander is the pick with its barrel sections and heaps of wally faces to play on. It can be surfed from two foot to a solid six feet. The bigger the swell, the more intense the wave. When Scar Reef is a solid six foot this will be three to four feet, but gets a bit shallow on low tide.
Phantoms There is another right-hander on the western side of the bay called Phantoms, which needs a good swell and no wind. There are also some other breaks down the coast before you get to Maluk that are definitely worth a visit.
Supersucks Approx. 45 mins drive from the surfcamp
Supersucks is the most famous and sought-after wave on this rugged coast but is Sumbawa’s most fickle surfing spot, however when it’s working it’s really working and will make your trip to Sumbawa more than worthwhile. Big walls of water break off a boil rock on the outside of the bay and then bowl and wind down the reef for a few hundred metres. The inside section of this reef gets really shallow and dangerous! Yes, Supersuck has some of the thickest lips in all of Sumbawa.
